  • Is the 4TB best bang for buck at the moment?

I think that's a pretty valid question… Are we just going to google best 4TB and it'll pop up as the first result on google? No. there are many factors which may lead one person to prefer a hard drive over the other, price, performance, durability. Obviously it's a matter of opinion and JV was asking people to give their 2 cents.

In that case, I've got a heap of homework to give you.

  • I remember buying a few identical model drives for $150 like a year or so ago… hmm.

    • The 6TB and 8TB are more expensive today even after the 20% discount than a year ago.

So in other words, it's a bad time to be buying Hard Drives. Easier (and cheaper) to just delete some of the old crap you're hording, that you've only watched once in the last 4 years…. We're all guilty….

Or signup to Google’s Gsuit and unofficially get unlimited GDrive for $10/month.

          • @PainToad: What?? Tell me more.

          • +2

            @PainToad:

Unlimited cloud storage (or 1TB per user if fewer than 5 users)

            According to: https://gsuite.google.com.au/intl/en_au/pricing.html

So not exactly unlimited storage for many people.

@allenhori: Also it's not for standard G Suite, it's for G Suite Enterprise, Business, or Education edition. On April 2, G Suite Business Edition will increase by $2 (from $10 to $12 per user/month). I believe that's USD so I'm unclear on the new price.

            • @allenhori: The 1TB limit isn’t enforced, has never been. Hence why I said “unofficial”. Check datahorders on reddit. People have gone wayyyyyy above that. I’m talking hundreds of TBs.

              • @PainToad: @PainToad, does that include photos? I'm nearing my current photos limit and don't want to change to lower resolution in order to get unlimited photo storage.

Sometimes, there is no choice when you need a replacement drive in a hurry when your drive is about to fail

These guys ship fast too. I bought an item at midday on thurs, it arrived 10am fri (Bris->Melb)

  • Purchased 1 yesterday Arvo, but didn't realise it was a bargain! Would of posted…

  • Any deals on the WD 4TB Blacks?

  • I want to go to the 8TB versions of these, I currently have 4X4TB Plain Reds in RAID 6.

Such a shame they're so damn pricey. This is a bargain however.

    • 8GB is $319 from same people atm. Not much difference in price per TB.

Or you could get the same 8TB HDD for $AUD219.9 (+shipping if you don't have Amazon Prime) if you shuck one of these:
        https://www.amazon.com.au/Elements-Desktop-Hard-Drive-WDBWLG…

They're Helium filled 8TB "White label" Red Drives. I've got three of them and they're great! If you use them as an internal drive, you might have to tape a pin on it. See videos:

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9W3-uOl4ruc&t=205s

        • Some of them are air filled now I think. Not sure if it makes any difference.

        • I recently got a 10TB one of these and shucked it. It's annoyingly noisy, so much so that I've ended up putting my old, silent, 3TB HDD back in the NAS and just moving old stuff onto the 10TB so it doesn't need to be used so much.

          • @Finner: The 8TB Helium filled HDD'S are very quiet.

    • Moving myself from 3TB Reds to 8TB IronWolf since its $35.90/TB whereas the 8TB Reds are $39.90/TB.

Keen to see if there is anything in moving from the 5900RPM Red to 7200RPM IronWolf.

Both have the same warranty, same MTBF.

      • +2

So technically the Ironwolf is better since it's 7200rpm?
