Lol, this is a funny one for Oz Bargain. I got a call from Accor trying to sell me a membership a couple of years back and I was due to be in Melbourne for 3 days a couple of weeks from then. She said that with the membership it is impossible to find the room cheaper. A two minute check on hotels.com proved her wrong by quite a margin when I included cash rewards and the reward nights with hotels.com. This is a waste of money.

    • If you find a lower price, you could submit a price guarantee claim: https://www.accorhotels.com/best-price-guarantee/index.en.sh…
While I'm a big fan of the hotels.com + cashrewards/shopback combo, paying for Accor Plus makes sense for me. The free night I value at $300 and I make use of the 50% off dining benefit. I probably spend around 2-4 nights at Accor hotels a year.

      • +15

Is the definition of submit a piece guarantee claim the typical reply of

        1. We cannot confirm the price difference
        2. The price is below our cost price
        3. You did not follow the Mayan calendar and didnt pay eith magical beans so the price match is declined
        4. No reply
        • +2

          Mayan calendar is often overlooked

        • +1

I second this comment. They don't acknowledge that they have been beaten on price.. So they don't end up price beating anything. They are a joke.

          • @kimba88: Yes they'll say it's a different room type or special promotion blah blah…

        • if they're like Mantra, they'll exclude "member pricing" i.e. if you have to log into the website to get the cheaper price, it's invalid.

  • +3

Also red hot rooms - great way to find rooms at a great price.
I've been a member for years and it more than pays for itself after 3-4 stays. I stay around 15 stays a year so i am more than happy with the program.

  • +5

I don't see much of the appeal with accor plus. If you're travelling enough to save enough money to get value from it, you would probably be travelling for work. If you are travelling for work, you wouldn't be caring about savings since the company would be paying for it all, and the company would have a corporate rate anyway.

This seems to be aimed at the occasional traveller that wants to feel special, even though they will never get the actual value back.

    • +2

Exactly. And if you don't have to use your corporate website to book you would be silly not to use hotels.com for the rewards nights and cash rewards.

    • +1

I got the value back with one stay. In the past i've used it at Sofitel Singapore City centre (the free stay that is). 3PM checkout + 50% off dining quickly make it worth it.

    • +2

Sorry have to disagree- its very easy to get value back if u like to travel
      eg
1 free night - around $200 ( i stayed at sofitel darling harbour last year)
10% off bookings -i spend around $3000 a year on bookings including my holiday in asia =$300
50% off 2 people dining ( u dont need to stay at the hotel) - if u choose your restaurant well this can make for a cheap night out. i save around $400 a year.
Red hot rooms are the best- they are only available for accor plus members and are usually 50% off room rates and they change every couple of weeks.
i don't recommend accorplus if u don't like to travel but it is my hobby and combined with le club benefits and promos its more than worth it for me.

      • +1

        Yeah, nah

Airline points, cash rewards, and only ever booking to gain hotel points through work have worked for me.

Having my holidays hijacked by a malicious lockin scheme (and paying for it) does not feel like value.

Google the shit they pull, it's hilarious. Like some kind of shitty hotel version of boiler-room

        • Also, astro-turf. Piles and piles of fake-ass endorsements

      • The free night is only worthwhile if you like to stay at places for 1 night. I never stay in the city that I live in for leisure, like most people, so most people wont see it as much of a value. You're essentially prepaying for something you wouldn't normally do.

I've never used Accor plus, but is the 10% discount any different to the 10% discount that I get as an accor member? Or is it any better to booking on hotels.com? I say this as someone who rarely pays for hotels themselves and I should requalify for Accor Platinum around midyear

        • You get an extra 10% on top of what Accor members get

  • Silver status comes with accor plus?
They called me two weeks ago and told me they were going to give a bonus of silver status as I was trying to negotiate price for accor plus.

    • Yes, it's instant too when you sign up online :)

      • Isn't it false advertising then if they leave it out and add it as a "special bonus" when it's standard to include silver?

        • It's one of the key benefits they promote on their website. They probably just listed the benefits on the phone when you asked for a better price?

          • +1

@points4life: So they went to ask their manager and came back saying something along the lines of "my manager has said you will be given silver status as a bonus".
I've never paid much attention to accor programs so I just took it as granted.
I did reject the offer in the end so it doesn't mean much to me but this advertising behaviour is to be frowned upon…

          • @points4life: Description about early check in is incorrect. Officially, early ceck in is only available to Gold and Platinum, not Silver

        • I very briefly worked as one of their sales. It's awful - they time every call, count every call, and throw every trick at people to buy their shitty membership. If you eat out a lot - you'll make the savings easy.

  • Would this promo work for extending current accorplus members?

    • Unfortunately, it's for new members only. However, if yours is about to expire you could simply sign up under a different email (I've done this before). Keep in mind this will not transfer any points and nights if you're chasing status.

    • I just got my renewal email this month and it’s at the $355 rate

      • Good deal, is it targeted?

        • +1

Renewal is typically around 10% less than the full rate, so that would probably be about right.

        • +1

I was just replying to Frodo - its likely that current members get this rate as well come renewal time

          • @Leelee: You're right. I just check my first Accor Plus (switched to the one that Amex offers as part of Platinum) and it does give a renewal discount of 10%

  • Why is the number of free nights different to Indonesia?

I signed up for A+ in Bali early this month and it came with 2x free nights.

    .

    • There are different variations and pricing for Accor Plus depending on your country of residence. How did you sign up, was it in person?

      • Yes in person. I was not staying at the hotel I just walked in.

        .

    • +1

How much was the price in Indonesia?

      • Indonesia is one of the cheapest, cant recall the exact amount. Singapore is S$509. Hong Kong is HK$2888. All comes with 2 complimentary nights, plus additional membership to another person you nominated.

      • A$390, as already mentioned includes 2x free nights

  • +1

Cons: late and early checkouts, upgrades never happened to me
Also they spam call a lot

Pros: red room discounts of 10% are good, welcome drink vouchers

  • Anyone want some famously aggressive upsell and cross sell bordering past the unethical line?

There's no way I ever want my details or anyone related to me to be on those lists

    • +1

I've only been called by Accor Plus once.

They led by saying that they noticed that I stay in their hotels alot and that they could help save me some money.

I told them that 99% of my hotel travel is paid for by my employer and that they have corporate rates. They quickly finished the call.

Never had a call from them since.

  • +1

Funny to see an Accor Plus deal especially since I used to work for them - luckily it wasn't in sales, but having been around to all the sales offices some salespeople absolutely do a dodgy to make a sale!

  • FWIW I gave my first neg here.

To the mods: This is a defective deal.

The lack of disclosing the aggressive spam calling
The vendors recorded failure to deliver service on many occasions.
The fake fluctuation in price tiering even the outright incorrect claims of benefits means it's not a deal

  • +1

I had to cancel my Accor membership as the calls were to regular and the salespeople were absolutely ruthless in trying to get a sale

    • +2

I've not received a call… joined late February.

      .

      • +1

Lucky you maybe they have your number wrong :)

I joined the free Accor membership when I stayed at IBIS Sydney Airport in January.

I recently booked the same hotel again and in the process requested a call from Accor hotels booking people.

The booking department never called, but the Accor Plus team did.

The lady wouldnt take no for an answer - I said no to joining at least 15 times, she was very very insistent.

Next time I am just going to say "No. F@ck off and please remove me from your contact list".

Australian call centre agent, never been so pressured by a non-overseas call centre in my whole life.

If you dine at their hotels often, or you stay a night at an expensive hotel, it could be value. Just bear in mind some hotels have a minimum 2-3 night stay to get the free room, and there are big blockout periods too…

    For $200 I'd join, but $355 or $395 I don't extract enough value personally.

Also lodged a price match claim under the price match policy. 72 hours after booking still absolutely no response.

    • definitely don't need to book 2_3 night stay to use free night.

      • +1

True. I've often booked a single free night.
I've only found a couple of exceptions to this (eg Tahiti & very popular destinations on weekends & long weekends).

      • There are certain hotels and/or certain dates you DEFINITELY DO NEED to book a 2-3+ night stay to use the free night

There are other hotels/dates that its not required.

Just don't assume you can get a $500 room free for 1 night at a deluxe hotel without the need to book extra nights at your expense.

  • +1

Okay what’s the best way to buy this? I see Fiji and Indonesia mentioned but those sites don’t have e-commerce. Any tips appreciated.

Is it better to try to pickup a secondary membership?

    • Typically you can only join the overseas ones if you are over there or have some contacts as the intention is that you will join in your own country. I'll PM you some more details.
