hows the OS on these? the LD oleds run their webos stuff, Sonys have android TV - both of which have Plex available. Is this in the same boat?

just ask as we have a 2011 panasonic plasma and the software has always been rubbish, so curious if they've lifted their game a bit

    • You buy a TV for picture quality, not operating system.

If you want something specific you use another device to give you the functionality you want.

Nah, at the price point it better have a damn good native app.

      • +3

speak for yourself. if the LG and Sony OLEDs have similar priced deals, i'd want a similar experience. Why pay the same if the software sucks?

        • +4

@emmett1 is correct, picture quality is the only reason to choose one TV over another.

I've had my Plasma since 2013 and I've never used the built in software.

@AdrianW: I have to disagree because you use the software every day. Do you want to spend that extra second changing channels?… because the software and processing power controls that. A snappier TV makes a world of difference.

            • @Ryanek: Nope - I have not used the software at all. I also haven't watched free-to-air for more than a decade.

          • +4

@AdrianW: I agree. I would pay more for picture quality instead of software that can easily be run off a better functioning android tv box. The software on the TVs hardly ever get any updates after a year or so and from the little I have seen of Android running on expensive Sony TVs, I think any tv box would function better.

Also, didnt these 2017 Panasonic OLEDs pretty much dominate the picture quality awards beating the likes of Sony and LG?

I'm quite partial to Panasonic because my 9 year old 50 inch plasma is still going strong with no signs of dying and the picture quality beats any of the newer FullHD tvs i have seen in stores and in homes of friends and family.

        Partially agree.

When there are notable differences in the PQ then PQ or other key features would trump the software. But consider the A8F vs B8; they are very close to each other and the Sonys differentiating factors (better upscale/sound) weren't applicable to my use cases.

So in the end it did come down to OS for me as playing around with the A8F in store actually put me off a bit as the intuitiveness of the magic remote and speed and ease of the LG was genuinely impressive. My partner loves the remote and is making good use of the LG, that never happened with the old plasma and don't think it would have happened with the Sonys android tv.

So yes OS can play a role imo but only when the differences in PQ or other features aren't significant.

You buy a TV for picture quality and to not be annoyed by the built-in crap. My main TV is an LG OLED running WebOS and it's fine. Some menus are slow to appear and tedious to navigate but I can live with it. My secondary TV is a Sony running Android and it's a piece of utter garbage. I'm never, ever, ever going to buy a TV running Android ever again. I can't believe anyone thought this was acceptable?

And I have network monitoring running—it's the only Android device in the house and DAMN is it chatty. That TV spends the whole day connecting to a whole bunch of different servers on the internet doing goodness knows what. No other device in our house comes close to it for passive internet connections.

So when there are a bunch of companies selling the same OLED panel, you bet I'll choose based on the operating system.

It’s improved a little bit but still is the Mozilla os. Not as intuitive and fresh as the LG WebOS or Samsung’s Tizen

      • +1 to Tizen. It's unmatched in functionality.

        • does Samsung have an OLED model?

          • @jztilly: No i believe they have their own LED based rival called a QLED.

Hi mate i own this model, the OS is good but not slick like the others its a bit segregated which is disappointing(as in settings for tv is separate to the OS/Apps etc), in saying that i have all the apps i require but not sure what else you would need, i use Netflix and plex, plex was added recently as was Stan. You can also easily play movies off media players on your network so before we had plex we used that but plex just makes life easier… The apps themselves are good no diff to others. I would suggest that if this is very important to go with LG Oled…

Before this i owned (still own in the garage) a Pana plasma and that was the best tv i've ever owned back when there were no such things as smart tv's … :)

Picture quality is fantastic, sound is meh but that's the case with most tv's (i have a sound bar).

    • A plex app is available along with a number of others. But I'm disappointed it's not as flexible as other OS's eg Android. We use a streaming service that has an android app, or you can view using a browser that supports flash. The TV doesn't support either so I still need the Android box. Not a big hassle but still a disappointment that I need to keep the Android box.

Why not buy good guys gift card at 5% discount via AGL rewards instead of the 3% discount?

  • Holding off expecting further price drops for EOFY

    • +1

The 2018 models won't be around come EOFY and it won't be till late in the year that you see heavy discounts on the 2019 models.

  • 2019 models coming soonish.
