Great phone, except for the screen in low light, it's nearly unusable due to the black smearing and crush. Also speakerphone rattles terribly, was a deal breaker for me, went back to the pixel 2 standard

  • -2

Cheaper to buy outright and go on the boost $300 yearly prepaid which works put to 20gb per month. Has unlimited calls to 25 countries and volte/vowifi work

    • +4

No it's not. This is $49 or possibly $39 with port in credit. A new pixel 2 xl is $690. 2 years on boost is $600 so $53.75 per month.

      • $690?? Dafawk?!

$595: https://www.ebay.com.au/ulk/itm/192575255824, and thats not even with a sitewide code. Ive bought 2x pixel 1s from them and its brand new usa stock as it came with usa pd charger.

Boost is $300 per 12mths with 240gb data (20gb per month) versus 15gb on the telstra… and you're not locked in for 2yrs.. especially given that better plans come out every 3-6mths… Why the heck would you ever want to be locked in for 24mths, especially with 5g plans and phones already coming out…

        • +1

Nobody should ever buy from big_yard they have a terrible reputation. It's not worth the risk. Besides even at that price it's still more expensive. I get your point but it's not cheaper.

          • @Purt: Going with the phone value at $690

            Telstra at $49/m 2yr locked
            $49x24mths = $1176 - $690 (phone value) = $486/360Gb (15Gb/m for 2yrs) = $1.35 per 1Gb

Boost at $300/yr (Assuming phone outright at $690)
$300/240Gb (yearly quota) = $1.25 per 1Gb. THLhis value lowers if extrapolated out to 2yrs to compare with above, if you apply the expected data price drop over time.

IF you could get the $39 port in offer, it goes down to $0.68c per 1Gb which is a great deal.

But it never makes sense to lock in for 2yrs, simply due to data allowance upgrades. Data price will go down as 5G rollout normalizes.. 24mth lock in never benefits the consumer as provider cost goes down quickly over time, but you keep spending the same amount every month, guaranteeing their revenue.

Also, not sure about big_yards reputation, one of the Pixel1 phones i ordered suffered the sound codec chip issue. Didnt even bother going through the store, went straight to Google and sent to the official repair centre in Sydney (think it was called CDTi) and phone was replaced under warranty, although it took almost 2mths.

            • @dsp26: It's still more expensive. That's what I correcting you on in my first reply. Worst case $1176 (more likely $936 port out then port back in) for this plan VS $1290 on boost.

    • OMG I had no idea this existed. It's on the Telstra network too! Are you on this? Doesn't seem like there's any catch?

    • Many thanks for this information on Boost. I'd no idea of this and might be highly suitable, especially with the calls overseas. Cheers RB !

I got this plan last time but after bugging Telstra enough I'm sitting on $39/mo with 50GB data + Google Pixel 2 XL + Google Home Mini + Headphones.

    • +1

      Winner!

    • +1

      50Gb data per month???

    • +2

True ozbargainer. How did you convince them to give you much?

      • +1

        How? please let us know.

      • +1

        Haha I broke them ;P
Just kept contacting them through the online live chat and saying stuff like "oh hey I just got back from one of your stores and "INSERT MADE UP STORE PERSON NAME" told me to contact you guys in regards to the 'friends and family discount'. They told me I could get a bonus 10GB data or something?
Then after getting that, I would recontact them and pretty much rinse and repeat with what I wanted. I actually got my plan reduced to $29/mo which appeared on my app for a bit, but then they changed it back. But yeah key is to play dumb, and just keep throwing it on their own instore people who 'told you the online chat can help you'.
Always be nice is also key :)

        Good hunting!

    • Holy crap! HOW??????? On Chat???????? That's ridiculous

    • my lord.

  • -6

Rubbish phone. Dead pixels on arrival. Then camera dies. Difficult getting a refund. Google branded phones are shit.

    • Disagree… Had 3 of them ( 1, 2xl, 3xl ) … Never had an issue.

    • I must say I did have an issue with my wife's Pixel 2 XL screen from the last $49 JB Hi-Fi deal (kept turning on and off randomly) but the support staff at Google and JB were extremely helpful and organised a replacement the same day.

  • Pixels are the best android phones you can get hands down. For that price it's a no brainer

What a time to be alive

I’m currently an Optus customer but willing to move to Telstra for this deal. Tried on chat but not willing to offer port in credit on the pixel 2 xl deal.
Anyone else had success? I’ll try again tomorrow.

    • +2

Negative, tried with 2 agents, same situation as you and also have a telstra account. Offered all kinds of other discounts on other deals, no budging on this clearance.

Really only worth it for $39, so will try again.

      • +3

It doesnt matter how nice you are, you have to be lucky and get
A consultant who is unaware that you aren’t suppose to offer the
        $10 credit to this deal.
Like all organisations, it usually depends on who you get on the day.

        • Yeap seems to be hit and miss.

        • +1

3 Agents, no luck, all said this is already the highest discount. Didn't budge with me being a Telstra home customer either.

          • +1

@Archer12: I am on my 4th, i have had extra data thrown in, but nothing on price. I am trying to port 2 numbers as well

            • +1

@mrwindow: Persistence is key I suppose, someone might bite. After the 4th time I may not even want it, but will push to get it and palm it off to the Mrs.

              • @Archer12: Tried in store, no go - best they could throw in was a google mini.

                • @Archer12: Didn't get the ten off, but thanks to your comment at least got a google home mini and she threw in some random headphones too.

                  • @ranma: Nice one, I didn't end up going for it, but suppose a $50 mini is a month off the plan or 5xmonths at $39. Plus whatever headphones you scored.

  • Regarding the $10 port in credit, would this be applicable to a sim that was activated recently for the sole purpose of trying to get the discount?

    • well, i think they dont know and it is hard to find out.

  • Can you get data sharing sim with this plan?

  • Right. I just tried chat. No extra data offered. No port over credit. I'm a telstra home customer. Was advised 'limited stock' so Darlene advised me.

Anyone having any luck with $39 ???? Agent name?! (Mod: Private selling in comments not allowed)

Went to one store today and they said they only had one and it was put aside for a customer. The Telstra shop assistant said it was the best deal they had seen in over a year and did not think there was much stock around.

  • Any tips on leaving your current plan early and not paying the handset fees? Only a couple of months left…

  • +1

When you continue to go onto new chats, do you use a different email address, or just keep using the same one? Wouldn't they notice that you keep asking the same thing or don't they track or share this sort of info?

  • Great deal, thanks OP… just signed in yesterday and went to Telstra chat to reduce it to 39$ / month .. sweet deal

    • What do you mean by 'signed in'? What did you say to get the deal?

I tried twice yesterday on chat with no luck - different reason each time. First reason, it's not for items on special. Second reason, it is only for sim only plans.

      • and third reason just then - it's only for the $79 mobile plan + device and $99 mobile plan + device.

        • I went to the shop, got the device ported from Optus and went to Telstra chat asked for a 10$ discount and voila :-)

  • Couldn't reduce the price, but got data to 20GB (never use anything close to that). Landed yesterday with Google Home Mini + some headphones.

  • I finally got it with the $10 port in. Though its now only Black&white availible. I think black looks better.
I used the following line and just cut and pasted various chat windows till someone offered the port in.
"Hi, I went to a telstra store a few days ago and there was a $10 port in credit availible for various plans. Is this credit availible with the Google Pixel 2 XL 64GB $49 plan?"

The other thing might be that now they only have the black&white model left they just want to get rid of them.

Now that I think about it the chat guy was pretty loose. I should have asked for a google home mini as well.

    • Think you got lucky - I've tried 4 times and they're clearly not meant to offer it.

      • Agent: 'To be honest and I dont want to give you false information. There is no $10 discount for this and you may only placed the order online.'

  • Would you consider $29/month, 20GB Data, Google minis and headphones a good deal?

    • Is that what you got?

      • I did x2.

        • How?

          • @911r: I managed to get the 39 deal with mini, data and headphones….after many many chats and many many no's.

Then I genuinely wanted to ask a question before signing up, so jumped in another chat, whilst I was chatting a just asked if there was any extra that could come off or extra data. She went away and got approval for an extra 10 off a month. So i signed across two contracts on the line with her, she then added all the discounts and extras etc. I now have to go into a telstra shop tomorrow to verify ID etc.

            Very pleased with it.

            • +1

@mrwindow: Don't know how you guys are managing this have tried 5+ times to get port in and they don't budge, let alone 20 off!

              • @911r: Guess MrWindow just got lucky. I've got one waiting for me at a Telstra shop but may try once or twice more. Can't imagine it working though - it seems that you have to get a pretty slack chat person.

The only thing I can think of is the time window - are people in certain timeslots more slack.

@mrwindow, did you try at night, or during the day? What time did you get the $10 port-in deal?

                • @brownbag: It was around 2/3pm perth time. I had a flag raised and had to go and verify some details today at the telstra shop, but all seems ok!

I tried many times prior to this with various answers ranging from sign up with this link, here is a different plan for $79, to no, to heres more data, Then two in a row it came through…

And the second time was just a fluke.. i was happy with 39.

I made sure the details were confirmed numerous times so i had a chat record.

I agree it is quite hit and miss with who you get.

                  • +1

@mrwindow: Finally got it - on the 5th try. similar times to the last tries, so it isn't about the time, but just waiting until you get the right person.

I wasn't game to ask for any more - 15GB is plenty for me and I already have a google home mini.

                    • @brownbag: Nice one!

Well done, pays to keep trying.

I just asked whether it was cheeky to ask for more data, she tried a second time, but got stuck on 20GB.

                      Happy days mate!

                      • @mrwindow: Website now says sold out, so wonder if they'll entertain any more chats

                        • +1

@Archer12: I picked my up from in store, so you could try that? I have them now and both numbers already ported. Happy days

                          • @mrwindow: Pretty poor experience. Got it in writing from chat. Called store to check availability. Went into store, all the staff were hush hush about it asking one person and another. Told me after that this is not how they interpret the chat and he's never heard of a telstra plan ever looking like that.

                            • @Archer12: Wow, that is unfortunate, I ordered online, then had to go in store for identity check. The guy in store just took over the delivery of it and started again i think. I made sure in chat i called out the plan very specifically.

I had a call from Telstra today saying the do not have the Google minis in stock, so i could either wait for them timeframe unknown or i they would credit my account with the value of the mini's. so i opted for the credit, $158 credited, takes the monthly total to $25.7….

                              • +1

@mrwindow: Edit, went to another store with the same chat transcript. They wouldn't do the port in bonus on the spot. So made me ring billing team (Phillipines) she corroborated that an online agent sold me this and they had to honour it. Signed up and will get the bonus added in now.

No mini, just headphones (attached) to the box.

I didn't read your comment about the mini but wasn't looking at pushing my luck. Ported 2 of my numbers over.

                                • @Archer12: Nice mate, glad they finally came through, especially after they have sold out!

                                  • +1

@mrwindow: Yeap, was a bit of a run around, but the deal was good. Couple of the staff said they couldn't believe it and were going to try it on themselves.

Essentially look at it as $500value.

plan isn't the greatest, but as the salesperson said you paid what usually we sell a byo sim

  • You'd be signing up to a 2 year plan for a phone that is already 18mths old.
In 18 months you'll have a 3 yr old phone. and still only 15GB/mth. might be fine for your 11yo kid, Mum, Dad and/or Grandparents.
If that's ok, go for it

    • Well the phones may be 18 months old, but for that 18 months they've just been sitting in a warehouse. They're not really 18 month old phones.

    • I did think about that, but considering i am on an S6 and wifey on a moto G5. I'm ok with it, even if i sold one of them and bought a G7 for wifey. With regards to the 20GB i got with mine, i doubt my consumption will go beyond that, especially now that i have unlimited 100 NBN at home.. I was previously using my phone for large downloads at home prior to NBN and never went over 20GB. I have been on SIMO plans for the last few years…. so for $29/month I'm happy
