Any Good TV Shows?

Wondering if anyone could recommend any excellent TV shows. For reference, I just finished watching Better Call Saul, and very much enjoyed the style of storytelling. Also really liked Silicon Valley.

i'm currently watching parks and rec, and finding the humour a bit forced.

    The Bodyguard on Netflix

      That minister was hot :)

    • +1 bodyguard.
Do watch line of duty too. It's also on Netflix and from the same director as bodyguard

      • +3

Recommend line of duty seasons 1 and 2. Seasons 3 and 4 got a bit stupid IMO.

        • +1

That's interesting. I reckon each season managed to surpass the one before. Looking fwd to s5.
Happy valley is a gritty U.K. Police drama, with strong female leads

          • +1

@roonie: I think I just found the villains in S3 and S4 just very unrealistic so I found myself rolling my eyes half the time.

    • +1

Bodyguard was great but felt like a rehash of the Shooter series

    • Literally came here to say this. It's so refreshing to have UK accents rather than American all the time. And I felt way more invested in the story and characters than most of the shows I've watched recently. Great series!

    • awesome mini series

@letmesingh: Only the first season though.. lost the interest in second when Marty mentions not to dent his top-ranked U.S. minivan.

  • +8

The Simpsons. Apparently people like it as it's been going 30 seasons with 650+ episodes. Should keep the TV occupied for a bit. Based on 20mins an episode you have about 220hrs of viewing. If you watch 8hrs a day you should get to the current episode in about 28 days.

    • +14

Yet 50% of all Simpsons reruns are the monorail episode.

      • +28

        Mono = 1
        Rail = Rail

        • +5

And that concludes our intensive three week course.

    • +6

Even better if you just repeat the first 10 seasons 3 times

    • In all seriousness, where can one watch all the Simpsons episodes? Would prefer to watch on TV over laptop

    • +2

are you kids hugging the tv?

  • +6

    Seen breaking bad, i assume?

    • +2

yea. better call saul is even better!

      • +26

        What you smoke'n?

      • +12

no it's not… BB is way better than BCS!

      • +3

They're different types of show, I like them both :)

      • Exactly. It's way more character driven, and about Saul going through changes and development.
Walt was a dick from the first episode and just stopped holding back. It was just an action show with a guy who started late, but never actually changed.

        • +7

I'd like them to just make a show called "Mike", and it's Ehrmantraut just getting s#$t done.

          • +3

@noobnoob: the bb universe is huge. they could easily make another show from another person's perspective. i love the storytelling style used in both shows with the older songs and montages.

            • +2

@belongsinforums: That's a fair point. I'd probably watch a show based on Nacho or even the twins as well, but Mike is just awesome.

        • +1

Mate, there are more changes in characters in BB. Walter's journey from whipped, ass kisser to badass, from a good man to evil. Jassie from the drug addict to the better man with great principles. BB took so many awards it is not funny. Perfect script, perfect characters journey and it is not only for the main characters but also for the second ones too. Walter's wife, And Walter's brother in law, his wife and many more crossed characters in the show. In BCSaul, there are also some other characters support the story (ex. his gf), but not as strong as it is in the BB. The subtexts in BB are in every episode. The storyline, drama and suspense are amasing. The BB raised the level of script writing for the TV shows. Every episode was leaving the audience in suspense and in waiting for the next episode to come… My 2 industry pro cents :)

      • +1

Agreed. BCS is a slow burner that feels grounded and believable at every turn. BB was a great watch, don't get me wrong, but it felt like it stepped outside the bounds of what could actually happen.

Really good video on what makes BCS so special.

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwvJ-77O_uk

        • Agreed, it's slow but at the same time good for Jimmie's journey. BB has more action, suspend, subtexts. The writer seeks another flavour of the script writing. Different from the mind-blowing BB, not better than BB is, not bad…, just different :)

ill just add that i really liked westworld too

    • +35

      The Expanse

      • +3

        I 2nd the Expanse, it's amazing!

        • +4

          Motion carried.

Seriously, The Expanse is the best show in ages.

      • +2

thanks! no way i would have found this if you hadn't mentioned it. looks quite similar to westworld / star wars/trek

        • +2

          Yeah, only better (IMHO)!
The Expanse is the only show I'm super-excited about while waiting for the next season.
Westworld instead left me a bit "meh" in the last season.
I would be ok in sacrificing Westworld to the great monster of online streaming services in exchange of a season 4 of The Expanse now and at the same level of the S3 (or better!).

          • @stampella:

The Expanse is the only show I'm super-excited about while waiting for the next season.

When is The Expanse finally coming back?

        • +1

It's a lot more gritty. It's based on a book series, for whatever reason the first book takes 1.5 seasons to finish. So the climax isn't at the end of season 1. Just saying this so you don't quit.

Most bizarre show i’ve ever seen

Even better when David Duchovny is cross dressing dubbed in German at 4am while you are sortof working. And ALF dubbed in German is classic.

      • +1

Just skip season 1 as it sucks.

      • +5

Absolutely, office is hilarious. Check out Boston Legal, its one of the greatest show out there, more like dramedy. If you can find it than start it from The practice season 8.

        • Denny Crane + Alan Shore. Hilarity ensues

      • +6

I spent a long time refusing to watch the US Office as I believed it couldn't possibly compare to the UK version. Boy was I missing out. The US Office might be one of my all time favorites.

Also really enjoyed breaking bad, stranger things, GoT, Bojack horseman, OJ Simpson, making a murderer, suits, narcos and Black mirror. I'd recommend any of these.

        • +3

You and I either have the same taste in shows, or we both just love very popular shows.

          • @RoostersMan: I guess a couple of the obvious ones are TV Shows 101.. but I did try to include a couple I hadn’t seen mentioned yet!

      • Personal opinion. No. I watched it and have seen various episodes on rerun and other than the episode that starts with Creed as the manager and Jim looking to the camera and saying "he didn't call a meeting", I don't find the episodes that good.

My personal favourite comedys at the moment are:
        - Superstore
        - Fresh off the boat
        - The Good Place
        - Young Sheldon
        - Early seasons of the big bang theory
        - How I met your mother
        - Brooklyn 99
        - And if i'm in the mood for stupidity, Angie Tribeca

        • Nine nineeen!!

        • Don't forget to add

          Speechless.
It has a fantastic middle child

      +100 for the good place

  • +7

    Sons of anarchy

    • Second this. Really enjoying it. Currently halfway through season 6.

      • It gets better and better.

        • +2

No, it gets worse and worse.
'Gotta get out of guns, the Irish, guns, Irish.'

  • +1

    Curse of oak island

  • +10

Shameless (the US version). I haven't seen the UK version, so I can't vouch for it. It's on Netflix.

    • i enjoyed season one of UK, then it got boring, stopped watching mid season 3
      .

    • The UK version is really terrible, but the US one (specially the earlier seasons) is quite great.

I'm disappointed that (like many other dramacomedies) Shameless seems to recycle a lot of the plots: Gallagher kid is doing okay, he/she completely (profanity) it up, rinse and repeat. Realistic, but hard to watch after so many seasons.

  • +33

    Black Mirror

    • watched the first two. felt edgy in a wrong way.

      • +10

That edginess feeling I reckon comes from too much truth, so much of it hits close to home that some of the episodes are uncomfortable to watch.

Worth pushing through, great show, good to be uncomfortable sometimes.

        • +1

the gym prison episode was just a bit…anticlimactic. and the pig one also felt like i just wasted an hour of my life.

      • +5

It gets better after first two.

      • Black Mirror is sometimes uncomfortable to watch, but that's what makes it so great and effective. It's insightful, creepy, and intelligent all at the same time. White Rabbit is creepy, superbly acted and difficult to watch, but the pay off is supreme.

        • +1

          You mean white bear?

      • It gets better after season 2. you can skip season 1.

        • thanks ill try s2

          • +1

@belongsinforums: watch every episode they are all completely different, some you will love and some you will hate which is the point. its like twilight zone.

      • +2

I don't know why you got all the negs. Black Mirror is really uncomfortable to watch. It's its thing.

Yes it is a great show, but most people watch tv to get excited and have a good time not to feel uncomfortable. I also felt like it tried too hard to be edgy at times, so I agree. Not my cup of tea.

  • +1

    Fresh Off the Boat
    30 Rock
    Outnumbered

  • +11

    Suits
    Scrubs
    Boston legal
    House m.d.

    • +3

i know that scrubs was really popular, but i couldnt stand it. same with friends. watched a bit of house. was ok. a bit farfetched for a show without fantasy elements.

      • +6

I think Scrubs is one of those shows that you have to watch at the right time in your life. It's also best to watch from the start and get to know the characters. Unfortunately, it hasn't aged very well either. Still good though!

“My Lunch” (Season 5, Episode 20) & “My Screw Up” (Season 3, Episode 14) are really great episodes that you wouldn't have expected from show a silly comedy. Yes I googled those episodes, I'm not that obsessed :P

        • Just to be clear to OP, you probably have to watch those episodes in context, don't just watch those 2 without watching the rest of the series first. They're both brutal episodes, but you need the built up

I've been wanting to re-watch but I've been told it's aged poorly, I think humour has moved on (I feel the same with new seasons of arrested development, but I still like the old stuff)

    • +9

Boston Legal was IMO one of the best shows ever. I and my partner would often pause it to soberly discuss the cases presented - then be in stitches 2 minutes later.
