Any Good TV Shows?

Wondering if anyone could recommend any excellent TV shows. For reference, I just finished watching Better Call Saul, and very much enjoyed the style of storytelling. Also really liked Silicon Valley.

i'm currently watching parks and rec, and finding the humour a bit forced.

Archer’s animation is NOT garbage. Do you think animation has to be anime style to be good or something?

      • No..? I mean the show is 'garbage American TV' that is animated. It's on my list of recommendations, so I do enjoy it.

      • +1

        You should watch it twice

        • I know someone already mentioned to me twice about this series :)

I'm going to watch it tonight and see what the big fuss about this

          • -1

            @Kamsi: apparently skip s1

            • @belongsinforums: Nothing wrong with series one - the national anthem is a great indictment on the media and politics - only 3 episodes each for the first two series.

              • +1

@trilby: agree - s1e1 is absolute top tier and sets the tone for the rest of the show.

          • @Kamsi: What did you think?

    • +1

      I should also include mindhunter

      Lame name but good show

      • Oh yes, missed this one from my list - a good one. I am in fact waiting for Season 2.

    • The Night Manager was excellent
      Tom Hiddleston vs Hugh Lawrie!

  • Game of thrones 1-7 and by that time 8 will be out

    • it's not just LOTR with sex scenes?

      • +1

I think 'how different they are' will be clear by the time you finish the first episode! Brutal and merciless… and sex scenes :)

  • Secret City (Australian miniseries on Netflix). Really well made. Doesn't run on forever until you're bored (looking at you US crime shows).

  • Killing Eve
    Sopranos
    Veep

  • +3

Surprised no one mentioned Elementary - modern-day Sherlock Holmes.

The Man In the High Castle - surprisingly good, dystopian alternate history.

Daredevil, Flash - if into superheroes/DC/Marvel

Counterpart (already mentioned by others, sci-fi, parallel earth) & Berlin Station (spy series) - both use Berlin as backdrop.

Designated Survivor - Keifer Sutherland, political thriller - when everyone in line of presidential succession are killed.

11.22.63 - based on Stephen King book, Sci-fi thriller. Quest to stop JFK assassination, very good.

Limitless - TV series, based on Bradley Cooper Limitless movie

    Forever(2014) - immortal NY medical examiner, crime-solving.

    True Detective - S1, S3.

    Already mentioned :
    Broadchurch - British crime drama
Happy Valley - British crime drama - Tim Norton's outstanding performance as psychopath - possibly why he is being casted as lead in McMafia
    Peaky Blinders
    Usual old classics e.g. Frasier

    • +2

11.22.63 (on Stan) is well worth it. It’s only a mini series but wow.

  • Virtually everything I've watched has already been mentioned. Can throw this in tho:

    Fleabag

  • +1

    Santa clarita diet

  • +1

Animal kingdom.. 3 seasons in netflix. Last 2 seasons are better than the first I reckon.

  • +3

The Wire is far better than any other TV program I've ever seen.

    The Bridge is good too.

    • +1

wire looks up my alley. thanks!

      • often rated best show ever. realistic, gritty, down to earth.

  • the office (us edition) / if you understand alot of british humour then uk version may suit you.

breaking bad :-p / black list (lot of repeating stuff though)/

  • The cry.

Short 4 episode miniseries. So many twists and turns.

Can watch for free on ABC iview.

  • I just watched Russian Doll and Maniac. Both great shows, highly recommend.

I’m part way through the Umbrella Academy, totally different style and seems like it’ll be good too. Very fun with a dark sense of humour.

    All on Netflix

  • Comedy: Peep Show, Broad City, Brooklyn Nine Nine, Veep, Bojack Horseman, Barry, Master of None
Drama: Sharp Objects (highly recommended), Shameless, YOU, American Crime Story, Twin Peaks, Big Little Lies, Handmaids Tale, The Crown

Surprised that no one mentioned Game of Thrones?

  • +2

I'm really surprised by some of the options listed here. I expected better, guys!

I'm very humble and shy in general, but I'm pretty darn smug about my taste on TV. I mostly watch Drama & Comedy, so I will mostly recommend those and try to skip the ones I noticed that you have already watched. I will also make notes, because there are a lot of shows that start really great and then take a HUGE dive.

Drama (in order of best to worst)
The Wire - really great show, but the first 5-6 episodes can be really hard to get through. Stick through them, it's worth it.
Game of Thrones - there have been some really awful episodes the last couple of seasons but S1-4 are fantastic TV.
Killing Eve - Only one season out and it incredible
Fargo - Fantastic first two seasons, skip the third
Stranger Things - One of the few shows that is worth the hype, I actually enjoyed S2 better than the first.
Sneaky Pete, You & Barry - Not quite drama per se and as great as the ones above but definitely enjoyable and worth a watch.
Homeland S1 was great, not sure I'd bother with the rest
Jessica Jones S1 - everyone needs to experience that David Tenant performance
Spartacus S1&2 - First 4 or so episodes of S1 are really rough, and the nudity makes Game of Thrones seem PG13, but quite good.
    Dexters S1, 2 & 4 were good

There were other shows that had great cinematography and acting that I quite enjoyed (Hannibal, Westworld, Boardwalk Empire, The Shield, The West Wing), but there's something that puts me off recommending them. I also acknowledge that most people with my taste also really enjoyed: Deadwood, True Detective, Black Mirror, House of cards, The Sopranos and Mad Men, but I couldn't get into them.

Comedy (order of preference but comedy taste is very subjective)
Dirk Gently Holistic detective agency - S1 was possibly one of the most enjoyable seasons of TV I've experienced.
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia - the first couple of episodes are a bit dated and rough, but it's really great.
    Brooklyn 99
    Veep
Yes Minister - An old one (and completely different style) but still great
The Good Place - there's been a drop in quality with every season, but I'm still enjoying it
    Better off Ted
    Community- Seasons 1-3 are great.

Anime - Now I'm not really an anime watcher and would have never thought to watch or recommend any, but the ones listed below are really great TV.
    Attack on Titan - Sublime
Psychopass - think Minority Report done well
Erased - So cute and sweet, but extremely good
Your Name - A movie but truly fantastic

I'm sure I'm missing lots, but those should keep you busy for a while :P

    • very useful! i can easily go down in order with your post. btw did you never watch death note?

      • I did!

I didn't think it had enough likeable characters to carry the story though. It sort of falls with Westworld and co for me - enjoyed it but not enough to recommend. Unlike Psychopass, Dirk Gently & Killing Eve which are must watch :P

I really do think that The Wire is the best show, but I probably wouldn't start with it. The first few episodes are a real grind, you gotta be on the right mood.

Also, if you're really into Anime: I quite enjoyed Ajin Demi-Human & Akame ga Kill! For something completely insane - Future Diary, I really hesitate to recommend those (specially the last one) but man what a crazy ride.

        • I find anime tropes extremely off-putting. That said, I loved GTO and Monster. I'll try your recommendations

    • I guess you've only got access to the exercise yard for an hour a day.

      • No need to be rude. Most of those shows are no longer airing, and I’m on my 30s. I didn’t it see them all last week.

I don’t think a few of hours of tv per week (GOT, AOT and Killing Eve. So 3?) with a binge watch a couple of times per year is outrageous or above everyone here.

        • It was a joke Joyce.

Your over-reaction may well be a symptom of watching too much American crap.

          • @[Deactivated]: I’m actually American :P

It’s hard to read tone over internet so I wasn’t angry or offended. Didn’t get the feeling you were just joking so I responded accordingly.

            • -1

              @Laurana: Ah, you're a refugee escaping a well-founded fear of persecution. Welcome.

I was merely suggesting that if you're watching that much TV you probably don't have that much time for anything else. I sought to make a comparison between your circumstances with that of a prisoner in a prison cell that is only accorded time in the exercise yard for an hour each day, leaving them with little to do but watch TV, if they have one. This was meant to evoke an image of some poor soul emerging from their prison cell only briefly into a squalid exercise yard. Australians would normally find such a tragic image amusing as we're generally stuffed in the head.

I love explaining things to Americans…

  • Shameless. US version.

Toast of London. Fantastic English comedy.

  • Preacher on Stan.

  • +1

A few that haven't been mentioned

    You're the Worst - SBS
    Catastrophe (2015) - ABC
    Future Man - Foxtel
    House of Lies - Stan
    Search Party (2016) - SBS
    Workaholics - ABC
    The Leftovers - Foxtel
    American Vandal - Netflix

  • The Wire. There’s very few shows that can compare

  • You (Netflix)

  • Lost (s1-s4), Heroes (S1), Prison Break (S1)

    • prison break was awesome. definitely fell off in the last two seasons but it was good to get closure. i watched the first few episodes of lost and hated it

  • These are my favourites :

    All time - Seinfeld

Action & story - The Bodyguard, Daredevil, The Punisher

    Drama - Suits

Sadly, all the above mentioned shows have no more new episodes. But they are worth bingewatching if you haven't seen them yet

  • +3

Six feet under was amazing. The ending is one of the best of all time.

  • If you don't mind reading subtitles, I strongly recommend The Bridge, Swedish/Danish crime drama. First three seasons still available on SBS On Demand by the looks of it.

    • Thanks for reminding me to get on it, time to scrub up on my Swedish aural. The Danish … no hope of deciphering those accents hahaha

  • You're the Worst on SBS catch-up.
Finale episode out this coming week.

  • Game of Thrones, LOL

    (No, actually it's pretty good.)

    • seeing as how the final season is approaching, ill give it a whirl

  • Orphan Black. All the way through to the masterful ending.

  • I really liked the fast witty dialogue of the shows written/created by Aaron Sorkin

    Listed below from best downwards:
The West Wing (Whitehouse political drama)
The Newsroom (Kelsey Grammar as news anchor for a feature news show like the Project, meets nightly news)
Studio 60 On the Sunset Strip (comedy show about a sketch comedy show)
Sports Night (oldest in this list, less polished, but still good show about a sports TV show)

    • The Newsroom

      You mean Jeff Daniels.

Great show but the last season was garbage. Apparently the cast knew the show was being cancelled before they even starting filming so put in minimal effort.

  • So many good suggestions already.

If you like crime like the wire, I'd recommend Top Boy, or 4 Blocks.

  • -4

    Married at first sight…

  • the wire sopranos, seinfeld, office(both) and mindhunter for some top tier television. Also band of brothers, pacific, it crowd,

Love BCS, somehow still watching the zombies do nothing, GoT, killing eve is ok, love and also dark(on netflix), house on haunted hill is ok scare drama. collateral(nflix).

curb your enthusiasm, arrested development, ozark, fargo, maniac, R&M, Flight of the Conchords.

edit: big mouth is ok, extras is great and after life was decent.

  • avatar the last airbender
    Outlander
    Band of Brothers

Watching TV is a waste of life.

You will all die, and probably sooner than you think.

Find something else to do, like riding a horse, keeping a wolf, or possibly helping the homeless.

    TheGhostWhoWalks
    Hero

    • Foolish mortal hahahaha

    • riding a horse, you know that can lead to becoming paraplegic. keeping a wolf sounds like a hassle. helping drug addicts? that sounds dangerous and demeaning.

      • Homeless = Drug Addict?

Now that is a manifestation of our failing education system.

Please, don't vote. Leave that to others.

  • Party Down is the closest thing to Silicon Valley. Underrated show.

  • I highly, highly recommend Money Heist/ la Casa de papel on Netflix. It's a Spanish bank heist series that's amazing and a bit different. Not many people have watched it and it's a shame!

  • Suburra on Netflix

  • +1

Mentioned in this thread once but worth repeating

    • The Bureau - France

NOT Mentioned at all and are worth watching

    • Gomorrah - Italy

    • Braquo - France
    • The Legacy - Denmark
    • Taskmaster - United Kingdom
    • Nice list. Do you have a thing for European shows?

      • No, but there are plenty of quality shows that aren't from the US :)
I usually try and alternate between foreign and English when choosing a new tv show or film to watch.

        • +1

have you seen internal affairs? 3 part movie series

          • @belongsinforums: Infernal Affairs? That's a good film, parts 2&3 not quite as good but still good :)

    • Gomorrah is great!

For anyone interested, make sure your viewing option includes subtitles.

  • Banshee
    Ozark
    Fargo
MarcoPolo(if you like some historic Drama)

  • Twin Peaks
    The Office (UK)
    Extras
    People Just Do Nothing

    Taboo
    Peaky Blinders
    Flowers
    Curb Your Enthusiasm
    Fargo
    Dekalogue
    Firefly
    Mighty Boosh

Many people are too stubborn to watch anime, don't be like them!

    Anime:

    Serial Experiments Lain
    Cowboy Bebop
    FLCL
    Tatami Galaxy
    Paranoia Agent
    Neon Genesis Evangelion

    Enjoy!

  • You (Lifetime)
    Avatar the Last Airbender
    The Legend of Korra
    Spartacus: Blood and Sand
    Oz
    The Simpsons
    Atypical
    The Inbetweeners
    Justice League, Justice League Unlimited
    Charmed (Original)
Smallville (A classic but seriously, Season 8-10 are beyond horrible)
    Bones
    Altered Carbon
    Naruto, Naruto Shippuden,
Cedar Cove (A unique TV Show where the stakes are very, very low but not a soap. Sort of like Slice of Life? Refreshing change of pace)
    Curb Your Enthusiasm
    Lethal Weapon
    Friends
How I Met Your Mother (I don’t think this aged well… sorry)
    Lucifer

    Arrowverse:
    The Green Arrow
    The Flash
    Legends of Tommorow
    Supergirl

    Shadowhunters
The 100 ( -_- Believe me. It’s tough to get through some episodes)
    Weeds
    Heroes, Heroes Reborn
    Will and Grace
Touched by an Angel (A unique Christian show, lost to the ages)
    Young and Hungry
Two Broke Girls (A vapid show that has… some good episodes.)
Two and a Half Men (Skip this. I’m a heretic that prefers the Ashton Kutcher seasons)
Top Gear (Despise the standard episode structure. I like most of the specials)
    Xena, Hercules
    The Goldbergs
Riverdale (The show is ridiculous. And it knows it)
    The Umbrella Academy
The OA (Something special. Easily my favourite Netflix show)
    Hunter X Hunter
    Breaking Bad
Glee (You have to buy this on iTunes or buy the Japanese Blu Ray set. I forget why)
Satisfaction (USA Network) (This show is bonkers.)
    House
    24
    The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
    Adventure Time
    We Bare Bears
    Archer
Dynasty (Reboot) (WTF is going on with the casting?)
South Park (Some real classics. And some not so classics.)
    Married with Children
    Futurama
    Attack on Titan
Chicago Universe: Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, Chicago P.D. and Chicago Legal

I avoid: Horror TV Shows, TV shows with the main plot being drug dealing or catching drug dealers.

There are some on the list I haven’t fully watched. Some are near impossible to get in full, even.

    • any reason for not watching drug related shows?

      • It heavily involves turf wars and gang/mafia related violence. Worst of all it does it to people I personally don’t care for, so in the end the show feels pointless.

Weeds and Breaking Bad are the exception, but honestly Breaking Bad had some of that as well. Weeds did it too, but in a comedy or satire way at times. House is about a Vicodin abusing doctor, but it’s a main plotline/character trait and doesn’t have that riff raff plot lines I mentioned.

    • No such show as Chicago Legal. It was Chicago Justice and it was pretty crap. AKA, one Chicago too many. The other 3 are quite decent though. I also don't mind 9-1-1. This weeks episode was quite good in particular.

      • -1

Boston Legal perhaps ? Mentioned above.

  • Castle
    Dark Matters (Cancelled)
    White Chapel (Cancelled)
    Firefly (Cancelled)
