A bit cheaper than a week ago. Probably not the most featured packed Chinese-phone at this price range, but Xiaomi phones are well constructed, and it's on Android One programme to receive OTA updates. No band28 & no NFC would be an issue for some. GSM Arena, Xiaomi official page.

Wow, great price. Beats the Aliexpress special price they had last week by a fair bit.

  • how does this compare to pocophone f1?

    • +2

      $150 cheaper

      can't compare sd660 to sd845

      • what about camera specs?

        • this has better camera on stock

not sure about after gcam mod on F1

          • +1

@dcep: You sure? F1 after update to Pie has quite competent stock camera app, and recent update allow 4K 60fps recording.

            • @Bigboomboom: You might be right. Looks like F1 is better after the updates.

    • +7

      SD845 vs SD660
      4000 mAh vs 3000
      6GB vs 4GB
      SD card vs None
      Headphone jack vs None
Miui vs Android One (You can however flash custom roms to the Poco)
      Notch vs None
      Camera differences maybe?

      • MiUI vs Android One
Dual SIMs in XiaoMi is always hybrid, so you can have a microSD and a SIM together.
The A2 Lite actually has two SIM and additional dedicate microSD slot. Would love that on any phone!

        • +2

          no hybrid slot for a2

          • @dcep: Sorry guy, newbie here, so i assume A2 Android One posted by OP has 2 SIM slots, where i can put 2 sims into it? PLUS there is another slot for microSD, am i correct?

then what is hybrid slot again ?

care to share more info and advise?

            thinking of getting one…

            • +6

              @langitbiru: no

a2 only 2 sims slots, no sd slot, no hybrid slot, so no expandable memory

a2 lite , got 2 sims slot + sd slot

hybrid slot means sim2 slot can put either sim card OR sd card

              • @dcep: thanks buddy, very clear explanation. thumbs up

  • +2

Have this phone. Camera is amazing compared to my previous phone.NFC would be good, also expansion slot lacking, otherwise I find it good. Paid close to $280 6 months ago.

    • +1

If you don't mind me asking what was your previous phone?

      • +1

iPhone 5… That's the problem with buying good cases for your phone, they never break, lol. Otterbox defender case, I can recommend.

        • I'm on my second xiaomi, never had a case on either and also never broken either - even after some drops which really should have, like being dropped edge first onto the corner of a concrete kerb.

          • @macrocephalic: Got very lucky i think

            • +2

@DannyBoy: The cheapest xiaomi's use a lot more plastic than the likes of Apple. Plastic, while feeling cheaper, is much better at absorbing impact without breaking (how much something distorts without breaking is literally called plasticity).

These cheap Chinese phones don't perform as well as high end brand names, but if they do everything that you need, then they're a very good option.

  • I'm still Rockin with the Mi5x (MiA1) 😃 running pie on it! Love it

  • Mmm wonder if the GCam port works on this. SD660, Android Pie…

    • Needs to unlock API2 for Gcam to work. Currently using one with GCam from Arnova but slow motion video is still not available in the GCam app.

  • +2

daughter bought one 6 months ago. loves it. top photos etc.
i bought another via shopback 20% rebate on aliexpress last month - hasnt arrived yet. final out of pocket will be $210.

  • +1

I got this for $200.23 delivered with the recent shop back deal (pending i actually get the cashback)

Great phone for the price :)

    • Whoever got this phone for $200-$210 ( after getting cash back ) got a great deal for that phone ( possibly close to cost price for the Ali seller after freight costs paid ).

    • +14

It runs Android One not MIUI?

    • +3

For your money, a lot of Xiaomi/Redmi phones offer great value, but obviously just like most other phones for most people not 100% perfect.

Also this phone does not run Xiaomi's MIUI, it runs Android One.

P.S. I did not neg you, rather debate points with reason.

    • +7

I personally found their UI better than the bloated Samsung versions.

      • Try XiaoMi once, never go back to Samsung.

      • Yes, as much as miui is a little different, and can be a bit heavy, it's still better than lots of other proprietary incarnations (like Samsung).

    • Relevant

Seriously though this one of the best Xiaomi phones you can buy in this price range, especially with Android One.

    • Saying meh to Xiaomi users is like saying iPhone is expensive to Apple users …the fanbois will neg …

    • miui 10 is actually really really decent. Huge upgrade over the 9.0 update

  • +1

This or wait for the Redmi Note 7 Pro?

    • No global version for note 7 pro only the regular note 7 afaik.

  • +1

how does this compare to say the other xiaomis with SD632/SD636?

I'm deciding to between something like this and probably the Redmi Note 5/Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 which both have large battery capacities.

    • +1

Recently went for RN5. Great proven phone. Has large battery, use regular headphone jack & charger, decent camera in AI version & I scored the H version with extended band capability inc B28. I prefer MIUI over pure Android, much more stable.
As long as it has SD 6??+ you wont need more.

  • +3

does anyone know how this compares to the SHARP AQUOS S3 6" Snapdragon 630 4GB + 64GB which is slightly cheaper.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/448193

    thanks

    • +1

      I'd go Sharp.

      • Sharp has NFC and band 28 …

    • +2

Go to GSM arena and click 'compare'. Has helped me to SpendLess in the past.

    • I believe the Aquos has NFC.

    • +3

the snapdragon 660 is a lot faster, around twice the single thread performance

      https://www.notebookcheck.net/630-vs-660_9246_9944.247596.0.…

    • +1

For me, 3rd party developer support for custom ROMs is more important than B28 or NFC, so would go this phone.

Can also see good value in the Aquos if not concerned with software updates.

  • +4

Too many minuses for the price range. No NFC, No Band 28, No expandable storage. Sharp Aquos S3 and Umidigi F1 play represent better value.

    • +1

The big plus here is Android One.

      • The umidigi F1 uses pretty much stock android.

  • +2

Would hold off A3 around the corner. 2 years of updated but phone was launched a year ago therefore only 12 months of updates left.

    • +1

Late July, so 14 1/2 months of OS updates left. And even then it won't be dead instantly, it will get security updates for another year after that.

Considering that the A3 release date is still only a rumour and the price will probably be an extra $100 to $150 initially, I reckon the A2 is still a good deal.

      • Okay Mr Precise. You want to work out the ROI, IRR, NPV, Risk Weighted Return etc for this also?

  • Hi, any android phones with a display size less than 5 inch?

    • +1

Samsung S10E is 5.8" but lack of bezels makes it fit in a chassis like used to house 5.2" phones.
Can get it for ~$850 when discounted on here.

    • +2

Samsung j5 pro with 5.2" $299 at JB hi Fi

  • Looking for phone with b28, NFC and fps… Under $300. Any recommendations?

  • +1

    Wow great deal scotty.
    Cheapest I've seen the A2.

  • +4

Just bought two of these last month. Coming from an Redmi Note 3 Pro and Redmi 4 Pro (wifes phone) I must say I MUCH prefer the MIUI OS than Android One.
Its just the little things that I have come used to, like turning off the torch with the lock screen button, instead of unlocking, swiping down notification bar and clicking torch button again. MIUI has lots of little tweeks that just make using the phone much easier on a day to day basis.

    • +2

if you like tinkering it looks like you can get miui on it: https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-a2/how-to/guide-convert-…

    • +1

I found that too. Same boat. Redmi Note 3 to Mi A2. Minus the ads, MIUI is a pretty solid rom.

    • Same do I, miui is much more user friendly.
Stock ROM should compare with overloaded Samsung style ROMs in stead of miui.

  • +2

Does anyone have a recommendation for a notchless phone with a good camera (pretty much the only feature I really care about) in a similar price range or up to $500? NFC would be a bonus.

    • +1

      lg v30+

      • Absolutely this (regularly can be had for $480)

    • Umidigi S3 Pro $280 USD before cashback. Has the Sony 48 MP sensor.

  • -3

Crazy how behind mid-tier android is in processing power compared to old iphones.

    mi a2

    vs

iphone 6s (almost 5 years old)
    https://browser.geekbench.com/v4/cpu/12798520

No wonder my 6s+ feels so snappy.

    • That linked mi a2 score is about 20% off the multi-core mark (5000 vs 6000):

    • check price

    • There's always one Apple user who has to comment on their awesome iPoo and talk down an Android phone. I am sure you paid 3 times more for your Apple device. Right?

      • +2

And they get 3 years more if updates ….

        • This is why I rate custom ROM support so highly.
Still have 2 X Nexus 7 2013's for PoGo here and both are running Android Pie with the latest security patches…… and doing it well.

I reckon that's pretty darn good for devices that are closing in on 6 years old.

    • +3

It's a $200 phone. That buys you an Apple… er.. sticker?

Price/performance ratio is always interesting with Apple. See the 5-year old Mac Pro that still sells for close to $6000 and has DDR3(!) RAM in it.

Have some Apple gear myself, but horses for courses.

  • +1

    I have 6+128 variant.
Monthly security updates are on par with pixel (2 week delay).
Phone feels really snappy mostly unless you are doing lots of things together. Camera2api is not available without modification so you miss out on awesome Google cam night mode.
The stock camera is open par or slightly better than my old galaxy s7.

Battery life is decent not great. About 3 hours of SOT.
Overall a good android one mid tier. Although soon to be replaced with mia3. If Redmi note 7 pricing is any indicator, mia3 will be around the same price as this.

    • +1

One thing I should have mentioned, inside big buildings you only get 3g on boost(Telstra) network due to lack of b28

    • Thanks, I wanted to know of SOT.

  • Hmmm, Have to buy my son a new phone, was going to get an iPhone se as most stuff we have is Apple but maybe this is the way to go as better phone at similar price?

    • yes, unless you want your son to grow up later, taking personal loan $3k or signup 5yr contract to get iphone 12

      • its a bit like that although not sure I want to get him such a large phone. Also does anyone know if you get shop back on this? My notifier is saying unto 13%?

        Thanks

    • It's not a better phone than the iPhone, but it's perfectly adequate and leaves you room to also buy an Apple TV & Mac Mini for the same price as one iPhone.

      • iphones arent really better than android though either. been using an iphone se for 2 years now, other than security there isnt anything much better than my old sony, some things are worse. but phones are all basically the same, just a hassle to switch around

    • -5

Go iPhone …then you get iMessages and FaceTime between all your devices and family members.
My son just swapped from android to Apple as his friends are mainly iPhone.

      • iMessages a.k.a. proprietary crap.

I switched from Apple to Android years ago and couldn't receive text messages from iPhone users for ages, because their iPhones kept thinking I still used iMessage.

Services like Whatsapp are cross-platform and heaps better.

  • Rip. I just bought a pocophone f1 yesterday

    • How much was your pocophone F1 yesterday? 4g/64g rom version?

I paid for my sharp aquos S3 last week at USD$140+gst (4/64gb) and it is coming on snail mail.
I am getting inpatient. How long is shipping with Banggood?

    • You got a great deal, I would pick Poco over this.

      • +1

Yeah i guess you're right. Although if i had of seen this deal yesterday than i'd have got the Mi2 instead.
