PEACE

First Post!

Been looking for a Shield TV for the last week and this is by far not the cheapest it has been, but seems like the best deal out there at the moment (Ebay coupon expires today).

If there are any better deals on this out there feel free to link them

EDIT: Just got a message from them saying they are not fulfilling all the orders, which isn't great of them to do. They did offer an upgrade to the one with a controller for $50 extra but doesn't seem worth it unless you need it

Would you choose this over a Chinese media box?

    • +5

      I would!

    • I own the previous gen Mibox, and was not a fan of it after the 8.0 update. It is a bit better now.

But id take this because of the I/O which is much better. Most other boxes need some sort of adapter to run Ethernet to. Fire TV stick is another good cheaper option which im looking at, but again, adapters are needed for ethernet (which you might not need but id rather not use wifi to read off my NAS)

      • hasnt the shield been updated to 8? or is still behind ?

        • yep, has been updated to 8

Every day of the week and twice on Sundays.

It can be used for games, 4K media streaming and can also be used a a Plex server (Not just client).

      • +1

It can be used as a plex client no problem.

In fact, it works pretty well as a plex client. There've been a few reported issues around 4k playback issues, but I resolved most of those for myself with a few common sense tweaks

That being said, I wouldn't recommend it as a plex server. I gave it a shot and because the device has limited storage, if you have any kind of decent collection the internal storage fills up with metadata, and you have to add an SDcard to it (I have previous generation 16gb model, so not sure if that's changed)

But yeah, I've owned mine for years - grey imported from US, and I am super impressed that my original one has held up for so long.. constantly updated (mostly for the better), the fact that it handles 4K, gigabit ether, and all the audio codecs… yep, solid device that "just works".

    • +1

this has a gigabit network where vodafone tv etc have 10/100

    • +2

No tinkering needed, 100x better support for firmware and software, ongoing bug fixes, required DRM support for 4K content on Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc.

A lot of cheapo boxes have shitty drivers and buggy firmware.

If all you want is Kod playback in LibreELEC/CoreELEC, then a cheap Chinese media box can be better and cheaper provided you buy the right chipset, but there's some DIY involved.

      • +1

Exactly what i did. Got 2 TVs which needed Kodi / Plex. Got Xbox One X and S on them, but Plex on Xbox One doesn't bitstream Atmos.
Couldn't justify getting 2 nvidia shields just for Kodi / Plex so i got 2x Tanix TX92 (Amlogic Octa-core S912, Gigabit, 3GB RAM). Which will allow me to bitstream Atmos and pretty much every other codec via Kodi / Plex.

Did some research, only problem with "Chinese Media Boxes" is that the cooling system is often sh1t and it overheats. So i took my handyman skills, made a hole on the top of the case and installed a massive northbridge heatsink to cool the SOC. Runs beautifully with no cpu throttling, can stream anything i want, can also dual boot Android TV.

        Pic of the Mod

The Tanix TX92 was only $55 each, so 2 of them was even cheaper than 1 Nvidia Shield. If you don't have the skills or confidence in modding the android box, then you would need to opt for the Minix Neo u9-h which has identical hardware but with a working cooling system, this will come at a premium though for $200, so you may as well get the Nvidia Shield.

      100%

Bargain for the improved performance and quality of life. Probably cheaper overall cost in the long run too when you add up the cost of the potentially numerous "cheap" alternatives you'll mess about with over the years. These things will continue to get support for years to come and already run far better out of the box with existing apps/services/standards. Some might find peace of mind with brandname hardware too. If you're disappointed with your purchase I'll lick the dust off the back of my telly.

    • Absolutely!

I'm a long time streaming tinkerer and have tried them all - Roku, Fire Stick, mi box, WD TV etc - and the Shield is by far the best - along with a decent HTPC like an Intel NUC. It just works well

      Get one!

      • can you create a network share (Samba) on the Shield? I need to be able to Samba files onto the media drive prior to viewing

        • Yep, I had a few issues with mine not reconnecting the share, but suspect that was more to do with my NAS than the shield.

Currently I run a plex server on my PC and just run the client on my Shield. I have given thought to running the plex server off of my NAS, as the shield can do direct playback (so low load on the nas), and that would save the problem of maintaining the samba share.

    • +1

Yes. My mibox is now running hot, slowly and frequently crashes. My Shield is streets ahead and never drops a heartbeat.

  • +14

It's absolutely pathetic that this is 4 years old and still the best / fastest option for an easy to use media box

    • +1

      *android media box

      • +5

Not like Apple TV or anything else is better.

    • if you playing games.
If you watching movies the mi box or vodafone tv will do the same job

    • Why? It's the best and no one has come close so why should NVIDIA? Blame others for not developing.

    • +1

Spare thought for people still using Boxee :D

      • +1

I loved BOXEE BOX, Simple easy to use and setup.

My son still uses it in his room.

    • +1

Supposedly a new NVIDIA Shield is on the cards for this year.

      • I heard there may be a new remote and a controller, but haven't heard of a new box - got a link?

        • Ahh, I think I read one of the early articles about the codenames in the source code where people were thinking it was a new shield and possibly and cheaper version of the shield. I guess its been clarified as a remote and controller. Two things I don't think need changing tbh.

  • -2

is this with controller at that price?

    • No Controller

    • +5

You could just click on the eBay link and have a look?

  • I've been looking at the minix neo u9-h to replace my aging Xtreamer Prodigy that doesn't support .265 or 4K. The minix seems snappy as has pretty good reviews, it's quick. I think there is a Nougat Release out too.

For me, I need gigabit ethernet. That's a non-starter for me on most of these boxes.

I would stay away from the cheaper Chinese boxes.

    • this is the only geniune android tv that has gigabit ethernet

      • referring to the Minix or the Shield? :)

        • shield, the minix and other cheap chinese are just android tablet

          • @asa79: Correct. Still, there are advantages of Android regular over Android TV. Depends on what you want to do.

            • @bbunch: What advantages?

              • @asa79: You can't install every app on Android TV.

                • @bbunch: you can sideload onto android TV

                  • @asa79: Just because you side load an app, doesn’t mean it will always magically work. Android TV is missing APIs.

                    • @PainToad: Its a media box on a tv, i cant think of any apps that i would want on there, that i dont already have on their or have already side loaded.

I have kodi, netflix, 7plus, amazon prime, redbull, youtube, 9 and 10 catchup

            • +1

@bbunch: No support for youtube or netflix 4k on non android TV

              • @asa79: Not a problem for me since I don't stream any services :)

    • See my comment above, depends on what you need to do with the Android Box. But for Minix Neo U9-H, the price is so steep that you may as well buy a Nvidia Shield.

  • +1

Was there like close to $168 with just remote not long ago

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/417483

    • That was a NVIDIA discount across the board around black Friday.

      • that was just one deal, there is a few in the search of $180ish

        • As I said Nvidia initiated. They temporarily dropped the price, others just passed it on.

It's not something that drops often.

Native SBS app now available in the Play Store, and 9Now and updated Foxtel Now app available here:

    Edit:

Also, a couple of nice Kodi add-ons are now available, for Kayo and Optus Sport:

Kayo has an app for Android TVs now; I have it on my Shield.

      • +1

Yeah I know, and it's the best one they've made (and the mega link above has the APK for those with a Vodafone TV, which is not currently supported by Kayo).

The Kodi add-on is more for people who like to have the skipping / custom features and all-in-one interface of Kodi (I prefer the Kayo Android TV app personally).

        • It's strange how some boxes aren't supported. You would think there would be two types of apps for Android - TV and phone.

Thanks for letting me know about the Voda tv. I'll sideload it tonight.

  • I bought one of these recently cos of the lag of Android TV on my Sony KD65X9000F. Best decision ever. The UI and apps are infinitely quicker and super snappy.

  • +1

Yep, still cannot believe Xbox and PS4 cannot stream 4K from PLEX. This can.

    • Yep, my main reason for needing one is cause PS4 doesnt support H265 and sucks at reading off my NAS

    • 4k works in the newest firmware for Xbox. But cannot do bitstreaming Atmos which really annoys me, so i had to go down the route of buying a Chinese Media Player and putting on Kodi with Plex.

Xbox One is capable of bitstreaming, but they decided to lock it down to only a few apps (Bluray and Netflix).

  • Great unit and super snappy… One thing I don't like is that I can't install the Hulu app, even when I log in via US VPN. Grrrr

    • I’ve read that to get Hulu working on a Roku in Australia you need to be using a VPN when you first power up and create your Roku account. You can’t create your account in Australia and then try and use a VPN to pretend you’re in the US. You need to reset the Roku and start again with the VPN. Yet to try it myself.

Maybe something similar for the Shield?

Bought one about 6 months ago. My wife complained we don't need it. Now she loves it. Wants one for the bedroom. Really good investment these things.

    • I've got better things to do with my wife in the bedroom than watch tv. lol.

  • prob gonna wait for those $175 sales again which should be on hopefully soon

  • Does it have play store? Can I install kodi on it?

    • +2

      Yes!

      • Is there still a quick setup for Kodi on Android so I can have all the erhem, free links too…?

  • Purchased, thank you

  • Does the NBA app work on this?

Also is it possible to attach meta data to movie files I have on a USB so a description of the movie and movie poster appear?

    • If the NBA app is on the Android TV play store then yes, otherwise you would have to side load the app.

Unsure about the meta data one through a USB

    • Where are you selecting your movies from? If you are using kodi and some add-on you can do it the same way as on a PC.

    • I use the NBA App yeah, works quite well, except if you want to skip large parts of a game… stuck with 30sec skips as far as I can tell

  • No more stock now

How does the asus gamepad go? Can you connect 2?
Or is the sheild controller better?

    • I dont have the shield controller, gonna use my PS4 controller when it comes and see how that goes

  • Qucik question to anyone who can help,
..I have Steamlink on my Android TV connected via ethernet to my modem with my PC also connected to the modem via ethernet. I get noticable inputlag when I'm playing games.
With the comments saying this is the fastest streaming box, is it likely to greatly reduce my input lag problem or would I need a more powerful modem to address this?

(FYI I'm using the high-speed modem supplied by Aussie Broadband and am on a NBN50 FTTP connection ..if that makes a difference)

  • Hey,

How does this go streaming 4k PC games over Ethernet, even accross the house?

Any loss of quality? Or would it be like having the PC connected directly to the tv in front of you?

Edit: I actually have an Xbox one I can stream, but I actually do notice a drop quality.

    • sorry cant help you there, I don't have any 4k devices

      • Have you streamed any other resolutions? 1080 or 1440?

The xbox only streamed 1080 and I could tell it lost some of its "clarity" so to speak

    • +1

I've used Gamestream to play games like Rise Of The Tomb Raider at 4K 60Hz over gigabit ethernet from my PC to the Shield which is about 20m away. It actually looked pretty damn good and latency was okay. Despite this, it felt smoother than playing on a console directly connected to the TV, mostly due to it running at 60 fps. There were some visual artifacts in dark areas and some noticeable banding in some areas, but overall was fine. I wouldn't use it for playing multiplayer FPS though. There's just a small amount of latency which when combined with typical input latency you get on TVs even in 'game mode', makes fast-paced games less than ideal. Fine for other types of games though.

Sometimes GameStream can be buggy and requires manual intervention on the PC side which happened on a few occasions. Shield does give you mouse control via controller if a game has a launcher (like Tomb Raider does) with buttons you have to click before launching the game, but you can alleviate these issues if you manually add the game .exe to your GameStream list in NVIDIA GeForce Experience control panel on the PC.

As for how it compares when connecting the PC directly to the TV, a direct connection feels snappier and is noticeably more responsive which I guess is no surprise. Also a direct connection eliminated all minor visual artifacts too, so I don't use GameStream anymore. I like gaming from my sofa sometimes, so I opted to just buy a wheel stand for my tower so I can wheel it over to my TV easily.

      • Thanks for the reply. Very useful

Just got a message to say they are not honouring the sale. Dirty bastards.

    • Me too :(

      Sorry guys

      • Haha they accidentally dispatched my order after saying they have no stock. I’m still tempted to leave negative feedback for their bad practice.

        • Bad review is what im giving them

  • I got a message from seller too, but was offered the controller bundle for an extra $50 or refund.

    • You can find it for 279 including controller. So 250 including controller is a crappy discount Vs 199 exc controller. I see this as a bit of a bait and switch now. They know they're out of stock and they left this up. Second time I've bought this bloody item on eBay and both times it's not been honoured.

Guess I'm never meant to own one.

      • +1

iot.hub seems to always do the OOS thing. Look at their negative feedback and sometimes they even waited weeks and pretended to send it to you then do a refund.

        • Good to know. They were very quick to offer me to pay more and silent since.

  • Missed out again dam when is next deal under 200

    • That's what I would like to know!

It's been over a month since any bargains on this device were listed and most stores no longer have them in stock.

Perhaps a new device is on the way?
