    Farrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrk!

Need to buy another TV just to keep up with these awesome Shield deals!

  • +4

Is everyone trying to battle it out for the best Shield price.
feel like ive seen this 5 times today.
    Can't complain though right!

  • Just purchased this earlier today fron Kogan at a higher price =(

Anyone had any experience asking Kogan to refund the price difference?

    • Why would you have done that seeing as there has been a Shield deal on every day for the past couple of day?

      • $188 less $20 with free Shipster was still on par with all the other deals. Just that $168 less $20 is even better.

        • +1

Don't turn this into a discussion. I was here to ridicule/belittle you, not enter into a healthy conversation.
Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries!

        • What is this deal? I would grab one at that price.

  • -1

How does this compare to other 4k streamer?

    • This is an excellent-yet-niche expensive option.

  • +1

Finally, got to use my Amex offer.

    • +2

Cracking deal with Amex offer indeed…I pulled the trigger too early with the Computers Alliance deal though :)

  • +1

I already have a xiaomi mi box. Is it worth me buying this?

    • +1

Same. Hadn't had any issues with the Mi Box either, but the Amex offer pushed me other the edge.

I'll just tell myself it's worth it for gigabit ethernet.

    • +2

Ok I got the deal yesterday and I have a mibox 3 as well. MAJOR flaw with the shield is if you have a universal IR remote. The shield 2017 (non pro) doesn't have an IR receiver. I have an old harmony one and i looked before i bought it and it said it was compatible. Silly me didn't think the shield wouldn't have IR since nearly every other Android TV box has one. There is 2 options if you wanna add IR. Have a hub that converts the ir to bt or buy a dongle (flirc) which is about 30 bucks. If you don't care about having one remote and you don't mind using the shield remote then yes it's much better than the mibox. My shield is back in it's box until i can get a flirc or new remote.

    • -4

      I don’t have a 4K TV so I don’t see any point upgrading yet.

  • After 5 deals posted I still have not idea what it does. If it is just streaming any console does that. Unless you dont have one of course.

    • +1

I bought it to run as a low power Plex server. Can ditch yet another windows 10 box off my network that seems to need a million updates a month and constant reboots I can’t easily disable,

      • +3

Mate you sound like an Apple user… Win10 is totally configurable w/ a bit of PowerShell… there's also Win 10 LTSC 2019 which I run and is probably the best Win10 version since LTSB 2016.
I run an HTPC w/ GTX1080 for gaming, music production and video conversion to h265… any reboot, crash or even "There are upgrades available" messages and I would flip out, but it doesn't happen.

        • -8

          nerd

        • What do you put in your powershell scripts?

        • +1

I'm an average Win10 user and I'm pretty over the constant forced updates, especially the ones that fail and put me in a boot loop.

          • @subywagon: I've only had boot loops when building my own Windows images… but that the case w/ Mojave and Oreo too.

          • @subywagon: In my network settings, I activated the option of treating my network as having a metered internet connection; thereby, I have prohibited the automatic downloading of updates for Windows.

        • +1

Hold up… Isn't LTSB only available to Enterprise licensed Microsoft customers?
ie. Organisations with a heap of cash to burn!
My org is relatively big (1200 employees, 400 PC Active Directory, 60+ servers, 16 sites) and still, management can't justify Enterprise MS licensing.

      • go into services. stop and disable windows update. done

  • Just got my mi box working properly again for now, but great to see so many Shield deals if it should fail miserably! Was kicking myself for missing the deal the other day, but now I see them becoming commonplace, I feel very good indeed. Thanks OP.

    • +2

how did you fix your mibox issue? oreo sucks on it, cant even wake it up from sleep without unplugging replugging.

      • +1

I had no end to issues since the Oreo update. I followed this today https://www.reddit.com/r/AndroidTV/comments/9fo34b/xiaomi_md…

So far so good, but it's still just today. Fingers crossed.

        • +1

Thanks mate, I'm willing to give anything a go after the rubbish Oreo update for that box.

          • @FeZZa21: Best of luck.

If all else fails, I reckon we just grab one of these Shields on the next sale, hehe.

            • +1

@Selenium: I already have a shield and used to use mibox on bedroom tv. Just purchased a 2nd shield via this deal for bedroom so will move the mibox to the toilet tv.

              • @FeZZa21:

move the mibox to the toilet tv

                straight into the bowl? 8-))

        • There has been serveral push updates to the mibox since then and one actually today which fixed 99.9% of the problems.

          • @thekow: Source? I only just updated recently and it fixed bugger-all. Hesitant to ever update the dang thing again.

            • @Selenium: Just got an update push this afternoon. Bug fixes. Not sure of the firmware number though.
EDIT: looked it up the patch was nov 8th - opr6.170623.013.2396

  • They wouldn't be selling an imported one would they???

    • Nope, official stock with 1 year manufacturers warranty.

      • But two years consumer law warranty.

  • Can this handle streaming without the need to encode the videos beforehand by the NAS? I have a weak little HP server that holds my movies, but needs a good piece of hardware or computer to watch movies off it.

    • +3

Yes, I play 4k hdr Atmos mkvs in Kodi from HDD connected to router via wifi.

  • +1

I still actually still don't get what this can do. Can someone help me with some information? Thanks.

    • It's Android TV box w/ a Tegra cpu… so it's faster, but still Android.

      • +1

ok but what does a android tv box do (srry new to this kinda of stuff)

        • +1

Pretty much what a normal Samsung phone can do but on a big screen TV.

        • +9

It basically turns your TV into a 'smart tv'. you plug it into an hdmi slot, then when you select it, you can have a netflix app on it, spotify, amazon video, youtube abc/sbs on demand, etc.

It is also useful to stream media files locally (like what a chromecast does). So if you torrent a lot of movies and keep it in your hard disk, you can 'send' it from your PC to your tv screen wirelessly (using an app like Plex).

Almost all android tv box/chromecast will have the features I mentioned above. Where NVIDIA shield is different is that it can also stream your PC games wirelessly from the PC to your tv. So instead of playing FIFA in the family computer, you send it wirelessly to your bigscreen TV and play there. Give or take, this is what most people will use this device for.

      Apps/Android:
      - It runs Android TV, so you have access to all Anroid TV apps including games.
      - Google Assistant built in via microphone in remote control.

      Video:
      - Having access to Android means having access to apps for video content such as YouTube and streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc (all in 4K).
      - You can also stream 4K content from your home PC using apps such as Plex or Kodi.
      - With chromecast built in, you can cast 4K content from your phone/tablet to the Shield.

      Music:
      - Again, you can download Android apps such as Spotify and Google Play Music and play music directly on the Shield.
      - Stream music from your phone onto Shield.

      Gaming:
      - Run Android games directly on the Shield by downloading them from the Play Store.
      - Stream any PC game over your home network from your PC (regardless if on Steam, Origin, Uplay).
      - 'Geforce Now' (which I don't think is available in Australia) allows you to stream selected games over the internet directly to the Shield for a monthly fee (basically, Netflix for games). It's not really worth it anyway as there's only a small selection of games and some require additional purchase on top of the monthly fee.

      • unkown, you should also mention that it works with Google Home and Alexa.

        supports most bluetooth/usb controllers.

  • Hey Guys, I know 3D is dead but I have a couple of sbs and o/u movies and wanted to know if the Nvidia Shield can play these?
Essentially can the shield play 3D files?

    • Its gotta a Nvidia Chip in it that none of the others have making it the most powerful 4k streamer on the market in a nutshell. Also works as a Google Home. You want the best? This is it.

    • Yes via Kodi app if your tv is 3d as well. Not sure about 3d content to 2d tv conversion.

    • Thanks for the responses, my current tv can do the 3D conversion but I just wanted to know if the Nvidia Shield could playback the 3D SBS and O/U files on my hard drive. If anyone had experience playing 3D files on this unit I would appreciate your advice :)

      • Should be able two my Minix x8 plays them fine and this will $ht all over it!!!

      • Yes I have played 3d mkvs on my 3d tv via the shield

  • I don't usually shop at Kogan. are they a trusted seller these days? I tend to avoid sellers who do a lot of grey imports. I know someone said this item is local stock but I'm more curious about people's experiences with them.

    • my smartphone from ASUS was advertising that the 4GB is the model with the fast CPU, the 2GB is the slow CPU one. so Kogan works off this knowledge, writes 4GB in the specs, but quietly they had put the inferior CPU's model number on the sheet. I forgot to cross-check the model number thinking it was the better CPU. got scammed twice alrdy, this and another case.

      have to be very careful

Why is the Shield so good? I already have Netflix on my LG OLED so what else does this bring?

    • Biggest thing is that it is an Android TV, so people who use specific apps written for Android TV will want one. For example, I've got a dedicated Plex server so using the Plex Android TV app is the easiest way for my family to use it. It's all about the apps if you have any use for them. Google "android tv apps".

      • I also have a plex dedicated server but I just use the plex app on my iPad to cast to chromecast.

        • +1

This is what I do with a NAS/Plex Server+Chromecast 1, I don't see how this could do it any better (except 4k)?

Do I need to use the remote? My phone controls my TV via IR and Plex, last thing I want to to need a remote lying around also.

    • Non Netflix content on your LG OLED.

    • 4k hdr Atmos rips ;)

  • I just bought from them before the price drop. Paid 187. Do they normally credit the difference?

    • Seriously, not many retailers do this.

  • I have a Sony Android TV from 2015. Do I need this?

    • +1

I have the same TV 8500D series. Android TV on that TV is slow, the CPU is very underpowered.
I have a Vodaphone TV box (last week) and it is buttery smooth compared to the Sony. The Shield is even better.
      The shield has:-
      Android 8.0 (will prob get 9 )
      Double the Storage
      3 GB of RAM
      FULL Google home capabilities
      Gig network (Sony has 100mb)
      Better WiFi

      • +1

You actually got your Voda TV delivered? I have spent several hours on the phone already with both Voda and Toll and still have not received it. Now they want me to go pick it up from their depot, which I can't because I am at work. Toll must be the worst delivery service ever. What a debacle!

  • +2

Finally bought it. Couldn't say no.
    Thanks OP

Don't forget guys you can get 1 month free trial from shipster

  • Why Shipster (got from Cotton On deal) not working on Kogan, still asking to pay shipping fee

Anyway used the 1 month free trail with new email address.

    • I thought I had the same issue as well. Did you enter address (2nd last step before entering payment details). Its after this step that it recalculates shipping as free due to Shipster.

      • Thank you, mate.
I did enter my address still had shipping fee under my account.
I tried on ChemistWarehouse, entered my email address the shipping changes to free. Went back to Kogan, tried to loggin using my account and signed out as guest, no difference still needed to pay the delivery.
Ended using a new email address with 1 month free trial.

  • Anyone managed to get their hands on the AU plug for the adapter. Being using the us to au plug for ages however it's quite bulky.

Also anyone with 3d printer able to develop the shield stand. Those things are like 30 bucks!!

    • +2

There’s a few files ready to download and print available that I can see. I can print one for you if you like.

      • I would not mind one if your in Melb!

    • What adapter? I thought this was local stock so you get an AU plug?

  • -1

damm.. the amex deal already expired!

    • +1

It has reached it enrolment capacity but not expired. Mine says 13 days to go. Happy to share mine.

  • I don't neee one but I afterpaid one lol

  • I've already had an Apple TV 4K which has not been used that often, and now am trying to justify buying the Shield, but struggling to think of anything I'm missing, now that the Apple TV also has Dolby Atmos.

  • So the remote control is a $60 extra item. Maybe wait for one of those $10 air mouse/keyboard geabest deals…

    • The game controller is the extra $60. It comes with the remote.

      • The remote used to cost $45 but is bundled now

    • But if you have an Xbox or PlayStation controller lying around you can just plug it into on of the Shield TV’s USB ports to get your game on.

  • Oh god, I bought off mwave then futu deal came out so I cancelled mwave and got the futu deal but then this comes out. Far out and I have the Amex with kogan activated.

  • +1

I used to ignore kogan offer and I let this amex offer slip. Speechless.

  • +2

I kept telling my self that I don’t need it for so many times befor I saw this deal! Come on, below $150! just take my money then I will not worry about it! I’m wondering if this website has any function to screen some deal with keywords?

  • i lost my mi box remote. is there a apps works?

    • Yeah the android TV remote. Get it through play store.

  • Couldn’t resist. $148 delivered using Amex deal. Must be the cheapest ever so far.

  • Throws my AMEX at the computer

Take my money! This is the ticket!

Already have a Mi Box. So this is overkill. But I do want a gaming android TV box. The MiBox does not have the chops for a lot of hi end stuff (and emulators) I tried to convince myself otherwise, but was kidding myself.

Now I wait for boxing day sales to get a 4K TV!

  • Question - what are people actually using this for. It seems very popular, but I can't for the life of me figure out why.

    So far I gather,
    -Gaming from a PC remotely
    -running locally stored 4k video
    -Android gaming / retro emulation?

Outside of the above, what benefit does it have vs just a raspberry pi with Kodi, assuming I netflix on the smart tv app/Chromecast

    • GPU a lot more powerful than Rasberry Pi would be the main thing?
