  • That annual fee is a little high which is a bummer. The Virgin Money cards give 75,000 points for a $65 fee in the first year.

    • +3

There is some value to the fee. $375 for a return domestic flight, two Virgin lounge passes, and two Amex lounge entries in either Melbourne or Sydney.

  • Seem to have changed the goal posts from previous offers

25,000 points for each month you spend $1,000 in the first 4 months. This offer is available to new Card Members only

I guess too many of us were spending 3-4k in 1 month and then never using the card again until points cleared then cancelling lol

  • Is a new card member new to this card? Or new to Amex?

  • +1

Can this cardholder enjoys the same perks that came with American Express card, such as the annual AmEx Small Shop, HN buy $xxx gets $yy back promotions?

Usually Amex cardholders need to add those promotions using amex app, how do we enjoy amex promotions using this card?

    • Obviously yes

    • Enrol in the offers using the app or the website; they aren't going to be automatically added if you get this Amex …

      • Via amex app/website ot velocity app/website?

        • Amex. Velocity has nothing to do with Amex offers …

  • Has anyone been able to find the minimum credit limit? I've looked but could easily have missed something.

    • +1

It's $3000 at signup but you can adjust it online after being issued minimum is $2000. When applying there is a drop down box for minimum credit limit, but then found I could drop it lower when on the app/website after being issued the card.

      • Thanks mate

  • Does the spend limit count if combined with a secondary card?

What card would you recommend if i am going to spend ~$50k in building materials in the next 3 months?

    • yes it should do. for $50k maybe amex plat charge or explorer. anyone know if they are going to increase the referral from 60k to 100k soon?

      • They have done now.

  • I already have an Amex velocity card with an additional card for my wife. Do you think my wife would still be eligible if she applied for this deal and have me as an additional card holder?

The T&C's refer to card members been ineligible.

    Thanks

    • Supp cards have always been exempt so should be ok. Ask AMEX if you wanna confirm

There's a similar deal for Qantas Frequent Flyer rather than Velocity if you're more interested in that.

    https://www.americanexpress.com/au/credit-cards/qantas-ultim…

It's basically a very similar deal with much the same offerings. The yearly fee is $450, but you get a $450 travel credit voucher which you can use on travel through the AMEX store. For domestic flights, it's only Qantas and Virgin (no Jetstar or Tiger), but their prices aren't inflated compared to Qantas prices (from what I've seen). I'd say it's pretty much equivalent to the Virgin "one free domestic flight per year" deal.

There's a lot of discussion on the value of QFF vs. Velocity points and people seem to say that Velocity points have more value (in the sense that upgrades and rewards flights are cheaper with Velocity), but the trade-off is that Qantas flies to more destinations than Virgin. I went with the QFF card, but maybe the Velocity card would have been a better deal.

Cant say I'm a massive fan of Amex travel, not a lot of choices and quite overpriced.

  • Can the complimentary return flight be booked in somebody elses name or can it only be booked in the name of the cardholder.

Had a look at the T&C's, but it is not explicit.

The complimentary domestic economy Virgin Australia return flight is only available between selected Australian cities and is available for booking by American Express Velocity Platinum Card Members

    • I've done so in the past on explorer card so I would say yes.

      • Explorer is different, that's a credit for spend on pretty much whatever at Amex Travel, the Velocity free flight is just that.

        • I also had booked flights for my friend using credit from Qantas Ultimate. Never own this card so I'm not sure.

Let's let other OP with the card answer the question or you can call up to check.

    • Yes, or atleast it worked for us 2 years ago. Valuable if you have family in Perth, as annoyingly, it does not allow you to go Melbourne to Perth return, but it does allow Perth to Melbourne return. So we used that flight for in-laws to visit. This is different to say, ANZ Travel Rewards which offers a free domestic return flight but does not allow booking a flight for someone else (but does allow Melbourne to Perth).

If you are considering this card make sure you can use the free domestic flight. The destinations are pretty limited and there are only ever a few seats on each flight available. I had this card and cancelled it as I could never use the free flight. The voucher on the other card is a much better deal.

  • The referral links information is wrong, not sure how to update. Referrer gets 40k points for each referral while the new applicant gets 100k points with 1k spend each month for the first 4 months

  • Anybody had experience with getting a card when you're a bit under the salary requirements?

  • +1

Signed up - approved without having to attach anything!

Also, some random referrer will be a happy chap.

  • So clarifying the complimentary return flight is AFTER 12 months meaning you will have to pay a 2nd year annual fee?
    So $375 x 2= $750?

A complimentary Virgin Australia return domestic flight each anniversary year after your first Card spend in that anniversary year

Can you cancel the card before the 2nd year fee and still get the flight? Or are you always -1 on your flight as you will always need to pay the next year to access the previous years flight?

    • +1

You can use the flight after your first spend. Its not after your first anniversary, its a new flight each anniversary year (including the initial year). The flights don't roll over. Also, the list of destinations is quite limiting so you may not get that much value - unless you live in Perth.

  • how come the referral links are going to David Jones card?
