  • for an extra $40 or so may as well get home hub… unless audiophile…

    • +2

No smart speaker (that I know of) would satisfy an audiophile.

      Shame Google killed Chromecast audio

      • Home mini can now connect to external hifi by bluetooth.

        • +1

I want Chromecast audio as my issue is Bluetooth 😟

        • +1

Right but Bluetooth transmits audio using a lossy format.

        • No audiophile would use bluetooth.

          • @[Deactivated]: Give them time. I remember when audiophiles would not use CDs.

            • @bargaino: Lol - true!

They had to replace everything with CDs. & CDs were better than an ipod, Then replace CDs with FLAC/ACC format into an ipod.
              Now going back to vinyl.

Luckily they also use ultra expensive 'gold' HDMI cables - which is hilarious.

    • Kinda confusing what your saying here,

What it reads is may aswell buy a 40$ more expensive speaker for a worse sounding speaker?

      • The screen is a Lot more useful than just the speaker imo.
even if the speaker does sounds worse.

    • +3

An audiophile wouldn't buy either device. And no one should buy the Home Hub for the audio, it has the worst audio of all Google smart devices (incl. the mini).

      • +1

I use it to play radio (tuneIn), so don't really care.
Apparently Vinyl has that sweet sweet sound now. ??? :/

      • My experience with the mini is that the sound quality is OK without being amazing, if I am going to play loud music I will do it on my decent speakers. Where it does perform really well is any spoken word content, as it appears to be configured for clarity of speech. Prefer this than any other speaker in my house for podcasts.

  • How does the google home hub sound? The one with the screen.

    • As above, it's supposed to be garbage.

      • I thought the home was garbage? I am referring to the home hub?

        • +1

          From best to worst:
          Home Max
          Home
          Home Mini
          Home Hub

We have one in our kitchen. It’s serviceable when quiet or when audio quality is less of a concern (eg. bit of YouTube when doing the dishes etc), but don’t expect to crank it up for the whole room to enjoy.

Warning: device looks like 9/10 sound. In reality, it’s more like 3/10

  • Cheap for a reason!

    • Data collection everywhere.

  • +2

Recommendation: Do not buy. Sound is utter crap.

    • +1

You might have to say more precisely what is wrong, or people will ignore.

      e.g. Distortion at high volume?

    • +2

I got one last time for the bedroom, sound is not too bad when you're half asleep or waking up. What gets me is having to do TaiChi moves above the speaker to adjust the volume or turn alarm off. Can be annoying until you get good at it.
