[ACT] Tiger Rice Cooker JBA-T18A (Made in Japan) $199.97 @ Costco Canberra (Membership Required)

610

Found at Costco Canberra (Majura Park) today. Given that the price ends in a 7, I expect this is a clearance item. Excellent bargain, probably cheapest ever for a new rice cooker of this model.

Highly recommended for fluffy, toothy, delicious rice and steaming all sorts of stuff while the rice cooks. Mine is still going strong from when I bought it two years ago: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/300082

I didn't even know you can make rice "toothy". I bake pound cake with mine, it's moist and plump like a Christmas pudding.

    • Whats toothy? Is it same as bounce teeth?

  • +3

I’ve always wanted to try Tiger Rice

  • Any indication this is national?

    • +1

It should be. And this most likely a discontinue line as indicate by the price with .97 at the end.

  • Non induction model, not very keen now

    • Is induction a faster cook?

      • +1

Not in my experience, ours takes just as long as the non IH.

      • +3

No, but it allows the rice get cooked more evenly, rather than just heat up the bottom part. Also it provides a better control over the temperature curve, which makes the rice more delicious. BTW, it all depends on what type of rice you are cooking. But tiger with IH can cook long grain in 20 mins and it's just perfect delicious. But if you are cooking short grain, you should expect at least 45 minutes to 60 minutes cooking time. But it's not a big deal for me, I can always just prepare the rice, then just set a timer and leave it, it's a super handy function.

        • -4

are cooking short grain, you should expect at least 45 minutes to 60 minutes cooking time

I can cook it on my stove in less than 15 minutes. One hour is a lot longer!

          • +2

@spaceflight: Short grain taste terrible if you cook fast. High pressure cooker might help, but if you want really tasteful japonica rice, you really need to cook them with time.

  • OOO, if the misses thinks its good, ima grab one first thing tomorrow. THanks op! howmuch normally??

    • $360 a couple of years ago when I posted it for $300 at Costco. Good model, worth getting if you don't have a Japanese rice cooker yet.

      • +1

I have a good korean one buts its getting older now a days

  • +2

I have the 5 cup model. The internal battery failed after 5 years. It’s not changeable.

    • -1

      sooo..landfill at a high cost

    • +7

You can desolder it and replace it, I'm about to do mine.

    • Are these battery powered? So they need a battery to cook?

      • There's a battery that keeps the clock going etc, but the unit is mains powered as you would expect.

      • Battery not needed but nice to have to keep the clock running when powered off at the mains.

  • What’s this conspiracy theory about 7s being clearance items that I am unaware of?

    • Google it, it's common knowledge

    • +2

Yep listen to the microwave guy

    available in melbourne?

    • +4

Definitely. I have a zojirushi which has been strong for 10 years plus. It makes much better rice than the Kmart one. I expect tiger to be similar

        • +13

Hate to say it but I think you missed out on good quality rice.

          • -5

@Twocents: You saying one billion rice eating ppl around the would mission out on eating rice for centuries on tiger rice cooker ? bias much.

I still think this wouldn't make rice x20 better.

I think me buy this would be buying a nail gun to fix up a chair. Lol

            • +4

@boomramada: Not saying one billion rice eating ppl around the would missing out on eating rice for centuries on tiger rice cooker. I said that you missed out on eating good rice using Kmart rice cooker.

          • @Twocents: Hands down… Your Twocents are really worth on this.

        • +1

These JP brands are way better.

        • In the rice cooker reviews, they give top spots to the Breville Rice Box and a Panasonic unit. Half the price of this rice cooker.

          From Choice:

Rated number 1 out of 25 when tested in 2016.

          Recommended
          Rice cooking score 88%
          Ease of use score 76%
          Jasmine rice score 95%
          Brown rice score 80%

Good points • Excellent result for cooking jasmine rice and very good for brown rice
          • Comprehensive instructions
          • Has many rice cooking options including steam, multigrain, quick, brown, sweet, mixed, porridge and slow cook
          • Removable cord easy to store
          • Automatically sets to warm after cooking
          • Beeps when cooking completed
          • Has steamer option

Bad points • Outer lid is not removable and may be difficult to clean inside lid
          • Small lip around bowl makes it difficult to grip bowl when pouring out load
          • Condensation build up under the lid drips inside and around the bowl
          • Relatively longer cooking times for brown rice

          • +1

@thefud: Does the Choice review include Japanese rice cookers?

            • +2

@rhino015: Sorry it wasn’t clear. Those comments and scores are for the Tiger unit in this deal.

          • +1

@thefud: We have 2 Rice Boxes in the family, soon to buy a third. They are all going strong after years, and the product quality for price is amazing. Prefer V1 over V2 for value. I lived in Japan before, and the Breville Rice Box comes pretty close to much more expensive machines. I can no longer eat the gluggy/dry rice produced by cheap rice cookers…do yourself a favour and get one that's sealed!

        • +5

Once a week? those are rookie numbers.

          • +2

@dojomojo: Choice reviewer are white peoples who don’t m ow shit about rice?

    • just one time better over next 20 years of your life bro

  • +10

High end rice cookers do cook better rice than the $30 kmart variety. Cons: cooks longer, has smaller capacity, expensive.

Suggestion: Get a $70 electric pressure cooker. Makes the best rice, has a LARGE capacity too.

Why should you listen to me? 40 year old asian chef who eats white rice everyday.

Also, it's very much worth it to spend a bit more in better quality rice.

    • +1

Hi chef, can you elaborate on better quality rice?

      • What ^ said

      • +1

Don't get home brand. I find they tend to have more contaminants (stones, husks, bugs, etc) plus the inconsistency in the size of the grains (some are bigger, some are broken) affects the overall end result. Surprisingly though, jasmine rice from Aldi is not bad! Also not all rice is the same.. there's sticky rice, basmati, calrose, arborio, calasparra, carnaroli, jasmine.. off the top of my head! I like calrose though.. my misus doesn't so we stick to sunrice medium!

Wash your rice and cook with soda water. Thank me later.

  • +5

If you are eating rice on regular bases or just have $300 lying around, invest in a good high-end rice cooker. The difference is night and day!

Any tricks to buy something from Costco without a membership?

    • +2

kindly ask someone if you can purchase with them

    • +4

Get membership, buy product, cancel membership.. you can get a refund at any time within the year I believe.

"On Membership: We will refund your membership fee in full at any time if you are dissatisfied."

    • Fairdinks, if you're in their area. They do charge extra, though.

  • Only 2 in stock in photo… Insufficient quantity?

  • How many are left?

  • Only 2 left. Thats why its on clearance
    Insufficient quantity

This is like buying a coffee machine. You can buy a cheap one from Kmart but not really a smart choice right?

  • issue with no pressure rice cookers is the time it takes to make rice.
And for that reason, I think cuckoo rice cooker's are better. No one wants to wait 1hr for rice when you could have all the other dishes done within 30mins.

    • 1 hour to cook rice? My old no pressure rice cooker doesn't take anywhere near that.

  • I have a small 3 cup Tiger rice cooker and I though that was good since it was better than any rice cooker I've used, until my parents got a Xiaomi Mijia IH rice cooker and that is THE beast:

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Xiaomi-MiJia-IH-Smart-Electric-R…

Not sure about reliability, but it's cheaper than this deal and I can vouch it's on par with high end Japanese IH rice cookers (which usually cost 2-3 times as much).

  • I recently got the Breville Smart Rice Box for just over $100.

Really couldn't be happier - highly recommended!

  • This is a staple item in every Asian house hold.

  • Thanks for the post. Will check my local Costco tomorrow as my Panasonic rice cooker just kick the bucket this afternoon.

Japanese rice cookers are sold at a significant premium outside Japan. (So do 220/230/240V models inside Japan) Non-IH domestic models are rare in Japan and you can have a pretty great feature packed rice cooker for between 20-30k JPY, i.e. ~300 AUD. International models with similar features will at least double in price.
Consider getting a quality transformer and you open the door to a whole world of cheap Jap/US appliances. Not for everyone but worth definitely considering. I have been using a domestic model outside Japan for about 5 years and it is still going strong. Oh did I mention the Kitchenaid Artisan that I bought for about 150 USD?

    • +2

That’s a pro tip, can you recommend a quality transformer?

  • Got this but it's average.

  • There is so much competing information in this thread. Is it good, is it not good? Is it better then the $100 rice box cookers we see in most places now a days?

    • The taste is similar to filtered coffee vs barista made coffee or cask wine vs bottle wine.

  • Only canberra has it on clearance and there’s only 2 left

  • I called Costco and it's sold out.

  • Plenty available at Crossroads, but still at $299

  • Plenty available at North lakes.

  • +1

Still available at North Lakes for $199

  • Is there any way I could check online if they still have it in stock without having to pop in their store?

    • +1

      Not easily, I don't think.
