Airlines is pretty good but China domestic routes are renowned for massive delays. Had to stay in Guangzhou airport for 8 hours before my connecting flight to Hangzhou was ready…and missed my flight to Brisbane from Guangzhou and stayed a whole day in Airport hotel because the connecting flight from Hangzhou to Guangzhou was 6 hours late.

Hangzhou is a beautiful place, only couple of hours flight from Guangzhou. :)

    • Thats because civil flights share airports with military flights, with priority being given to military. Best to book flights that depart early in the day, as the day wears on delays become worse.

Mate, I am not sure where did you learn that from but, according to my experience and knowledge to China, over there the military flights using dedicated military airports. And there are many military airports in China. What you were claiming will only be true when the nation is in a state of war.

        • +3

Military flights do not share the same airport with civil flights but they share the route as well as airspace in some cities (like Beijing)

          • +1

@ToTheMoon: Yes, I agree with that. When scheduling the air routes the military flights always have higher priority. But this is a different topic though.

          • @ToTheMoon: Actually, Most of them will not share. However, in xinjiang where is the north side of china. The military flights share the same airport as normal flights. People are not allowed to take any photos inside the airport.

        • +2

This is more to do with airspace and traffic. Priority is given to the military in terms of airspace use, and only limited waypoints are allowed. The rest are used by the military.

bad luck with your flight delays. maybe a good idea to get a high speed train once on the mainland.

  • +3

They give free tour tickets (includes bus ride) for a halfday or longer stopover in Guangzhou at their desk outside customs.. pretty nice. Make sure you book beforehand

I believe the baggage allowance should be 23kg*2 per person.

    • That's correct

    • Yep, pretty sure about that.

only if you're enroute to North America I think

Nope just flew there and back last week.

Zone 1:Journeys involving CZ’s Japan, America, Oceania,Russia (note 1) or Dubai(note 2) routes, or routes originating from Singapore(note 3) to Mainland China.

        23*2 kg

That's a lovely price for a direct flight. There are lots to do in the city and it's kids friendly.

Moreover, you can take the high speed train to Hong kong for a visit from Guangzhou within 1 hour.

    • The train is awesome. But the visa thing for China mainland is too painful to bother coming back from HK.

    Anything from Sydney?

    • +1

Second. I woundn't mind jumping over for a weekend at this price.

      Jetstar to Melbourne?

Do you need a visa? If so, 2 notes to be aware of:

    Note 1. Need visa, single entry is $110 - $200ish https://www.travelchinaguide.com/embassy/australia/visa-appl…

Note 2. Travel Without Visa (TWOV) program allows upto 6 days stay but visa rules need to apply and this wouldn't be eligible if it was round trip

So basically add another $100 to that fare.

    • last time i saw a big group of people waiting to get their visa on arrival at customs. they were complaining. theyd maybe been stuck there a few hours. its pretty easy to pay the $110 and get the visa honestly

It's a state owned airline. I wouldn't want to support a non democratic govt by buying tickets from them. More so because of the their treatment of the minorities.

Would neg this deal but the rules don't allow.

    • +4

may as well stop buying chinese products altogether then, if you don't wish to support their government.

      • -7

Personally, that's what I try to do. Unfortunately sometimes there is no choice.

        • pretty sure its impossible to avoid chinese products right now. the japanese versions of 'a current affair' often advocate against chinese food products because of contamination concerns.

anyway, it might interest you to know that the CCP came into power democratically.

    • The word naive comes to mind.

CZ in Y. How much you paying me?

  • -1

is it easy to get a visa? read you need to apply at the consulate (thats what i did when i went in 2011),

    • You can do mail in Visa, but I think you have to send it to Canberra.
It's infinitely faster and easier to do at the St Kilda road location. Generally 3 day turn around.

    • -1

pretty easy as long as you tick the right boxes on the forms. if you're really lost, find a chinese travel agent. theyve done one for me before.

  • +2

Solid price. I'm keen for an ex Brisbane deal

  • Madness, the air tickets prices, even cheaper than a domestic cost, if not that visa thingy, would definitely fly there for a week’s fun.

  • Any Shanghai Deal?

  • +2

would be sweet to go there then take the train to hong kong

  • At least this is better than China eastern (Shanghai airport). Too many process when transferring. It will take up to 30Min after touching down.

  • China Southern Airline is always the better carrier to GZ than China Eastern. I would have jumped on this if the dates suits me. BARGAIN!
