Free Dinner at Mosques During Ramadan

39458

Edit - updated title to reflect advice provided by ar7ist.

Read this in the Canberra times -

It's also a month of gratitude. By abstaining from food and water during the day, the faithful are reminded of those less fortunate. Each night during Ramadan, mosques and aid organisations set up tents and tables to serve free evening meals for the poor.

I did a bit of research and it appears that this is 1) available in most mosques around the world; 2) is not widely advertised and 3) generally available to everybody.

The timing of the dinner depends on when the fast is broken which will be different each day for each state.

The time for the dinner is the second last column titled "Iftar Maghrib"

Free food and drinks every evening for everyone in most of the mosques - check for local mosque or speak to any Muslim friend, neighbour or colleague for more details.

This is a great way to explore and connect to a different culture.

Ramadan Kareem to those that celebrate Ramadan.

Not even close to the same thing.

The first sentence of that pamphlet says that you need to prove your low income status through showing a government-issued card.

    • +2

      Top deal. Don't forget CashRewards.

  • +12

I am shocked that this is considered a bargain. I live in west melbourne and something like this is sorely needed for a lot of the lower-income muslim population at the end of ramadan. The reason why OP says its not widely advertised is telling enough - this is not for the masses to descend upon.

    • OK, deal not available in West Melbourne. Locked in.

    • Spot on this is not a deal to bring your family and the kids and get a free feed and then bugger off, it's for people who are interested in learning about the religion or are already adherents and as such it has religious connotations and shouldn't be considered a deal or a bargain at all. Oddly, if you point this out people like Zeggie become triggered.

      • +1

As I see it, they would like for you to bring the whole family. There also doesn't appear to be any requirement to sit through a sermon or prayer.

  • +7

Posted bargains getting worse by the week

    • But don't you want a Tesla for only 100k?

This website has a recent content issue and the owners are not doing anything to remedy the situation. Will be interesting to see if any new websites pop up

  • +5

This is ozbargin your talking about and it’s free food, this is for everyone who should attend if convenient, is attending illegal? or we breaking the law? Then if no then I see there shouldn’t be a problem. It’s a free country godsake. This deal shouldn’t warrant any neg votes, neg me if you like for the people who go they are also considered family, under any religion, they welcome everyone.

  • +14

Not a bargain, pretty much normal for many religious places eg. Sikh temples. I don't think it's consistent with the intent of ozbargain to list free food at religious places as "bargains"

    • +8

      Correct!

Sikh temples offer free food for anyone, no matter your background or time of the year, whether you can afford it or not. It's not at all about bargains and instead we should praise institutions (religious or not) that do any good deed for humanity.

Nevertheless I thank the OP for passing on a good message to the community, if even 10 OZB's attend as a result of this post, that would be great way to at least learn something about a religion or a place of worship. I may go myself, just because I haven't been to a mosque before.

  • +7

Thanks for promoting this. If I were to go, it'd defs be to socialise with the community instead of the food. Free food is good and all, but sharing a festive cultural season with people different from you has got to be one of the most rewarding 'free' things you can do!

  • This is basically sonics time to shine, even if the movie looks horrible. Hes is never not fasting.

  • +11

Ozb really going downhill with some of this stuff. Should we also post inner city soup kitchens ?

  • +8

Hey guys, I almost wasted my money on McDonalds the other night when I was in Collingwood. Then I realised there is a van giving out free food! Im going to post it as a deal! Its so good

    https://www.vinnies.org.au/page/Find_Help/VIC/Food/Collingwo…

    • Did you socialise with anyone ?

    • +4

      From that link:

Who can access the soup van?

The Collingwood Soup Van is a free service available to anyone in the Collingwood area. We typically support people who face financial difficulties and those who are homeless.

      Maybe you should post it?

      • +1

I think with home values dropping between 2-15% , many are having financial difficulties and therefore eligible .

      • 29/09/2018 @ 6pm, Collingwood food van ran outta food that evening.

I reversed into a pillar once at that Maccas carpark. Glad I didn't fix it, I wrote off the car a month later. My car paint is still on it. I hate my life.

      • +1

I reversed into a pillar once at that Maccas carpark

Did you get free Maccas after that?

        • I think I slipped on my own vomit from the Big Mac I downed. So I ate the vomit and got a second meal free.

  • Thanks op for posting this and making it more know.

I won't be upvoting the deal as I believe that for most of us here on Ozbargain money isn't an issue, we can afford food.
Instead I'll be thanking op for posting this, for making it better well know.

If money isn't a issue for you and you're not Muslim please don't exploit this folks.

  • +12

Nothing to do with deals and shouldn't be posted here.

  • +11

I would prefer it if Ozbargain did not permit any religious based posts. I have downvoted accordingly.

    • +3

Agree, and If one religious based post is allowed , than the rule should also allow for others too in the future to be fair …..

    • +1

      Good God no.

    • Next post I make will be my local church, free wine and bread

      • Seems you'll only need 5 loaves.

"Bring them here to me”, he said. And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children. "This will be great to include in an OzBargain comment", he said.

        Matthew 14:13-21.

The women on the linked photo look so modest. Such a heavenly image and they look so blessed.

  • +1

Any dogmatic religion i.e. Islam, Judaism and Catholicism = automatic downvote.

    • My opinion:
      一神教均为邪教
      All one-god religion is cult

  • +4

Great deal. Everyone is welcome. Ive even seen priest from the neighbouring church eating there

  • +8

This should go in the forum's I think
I feel if these things are abused they will stop

  • +7

It's not a bargain and should have not been post.

Some people might really need it and it would have been better to put flyers up in a salvo store or any charity related to food giving… I see most of religious places having free food for people in need: indian temples, churches, buddhist temples,… But it is for people who really can't afford it. Some of them even give clothes, toys and other things to families in need. And to avoid abuse and greedy people, they won't advertise it in a public forum.

So i think this should be remove.

    • -1

You don't know the backgrounds or situations of all visitors to OzBargain. There are many who may be needy and not aware events and services like this exist.

  • -5

Censorship just because religion is involved?

    Allah can take it, surely!

  • +4

Neg vote as this is not a deal/bargain, if this is a bargain then Centrelink will also be a bargain.
In saying that if a Centrelink post was created there would also be 185+ votes.

Edit, lol neg vote revoked by mod cause no explanation was stated, when the bulk of the explanation has already been provided by other bargainers is there really a need to repeat the same explanation?

    • +1

Edit, lol neg vote revoked by mod cause no explanation was stated,

The behaviour of the mods is getting worse by the day

      • Positive voted.
This website in general is good for finding out deals, but to have an actual discussion it's horrible.

      • Yep, Ive had many Negs revoked with lame excuses.

Not voting anymore deals on good or bad. Mods need to act in accordance with ozb community. Power trip overdose

        • Mods have already eloquently said why negative votes have and will be revoked in this thread, and clarified the applicable rule.

  • +2

While I agree that it might not be the best 'deal', what's stopping us having a forum section (similar to the birthday deals one), which highlights areas where people can get assistance if required? The fact is a lot of people don't know things like this exist and it might help them

    • +1

There's plenty of suitable channels that provide such information that caters towards these unique situations.
For my understanding this websites purpose is to provide genuine bargains to the visitors.
The bargains have set guidelines that seems to need work because it's clearly being discussed here.
I, among many feel that this website doesn't have a solution to a problem that seems to be getting worse. E.g. 100k new tesla that was upvoted for the lulz rather than the purpose of the featured deals typifies this. Still, it's been a good few years of bargains & there's some ripper that still get posted. /Rant

  • +4

Some religious groups(Sikhs) have free meals everyday. Not a bargain.

    • Yeah but its the same food every day. Here you get different food on the same day, from turkish to lebansese to Indian. Then something different the next day, Malaysian, Mexican, etc

  • +8

OK, from a purely Ozbargain point of view, is this a bargain?

Need to travel to local mosque (petrol/public transport).
Feel awkward if you're not dressed appropriately.
    Maybe be preached to.
Get some rice and curry to eat with strangers, and feel bad, because you're not fasting, nor muslim, nor poor (unless you are).

Like those time share deals - give us a few hours for a free holiday.

    Not for me.
    Not a bargain

BTW, my local church has a free meal weekly for the poor (my wife assists) - should I advertise it here?

    • +1

Need to travel to local mosque (petrol/public transport).
Feel awkward if you're not dressed appropriately.
      Maybe be preached to.

Do you neg other deals that require travel or use of petrol? Coles, Woolworth, Maccas? Seems like a weak reason.

Feeling awkward is an issue you have and nothing to do with the deal.

      Preached? Maybe you won’t be?

      • +5

        Preached? Maybe you won’t be?

Of course you'll be. People don't go to mosque to play video games.

        • +2

No. That's just false and you've made it up.

        • I doubt a person who has been fasting from all food and drink from sunrise to sunset is going to have the energy to preach to anyone.

All I see is people eating and enjoying the company of strangers. Then everyone goes home or to prayers in the masjid.

    • Not for me /= Not a bargain, and besides, you don't speak on behalf of everyone.

    • You should post it here, it's a bargain in the eyes of mods

  • +1

    Is it BYO?

  • +2

    I'm not Muslim

But did you know they don't even charge interest to each other if they lend money?

Even some of the companies / banks.

It's against their religion / beliefs

Muslims get a bad rap because of all the news but seriously that is a very small minority

    • +5

It may be true for individuals but banks/financial corporations DO charge and pay interest under different names. You can do your own research if you are interested but in a nutshell when you get a loan they claim that they "rent" you the money and charge a fixed amount. When you open a savings account this time you are a shareholder of the profits (but never losses!) and they still pay you interest. The system works exactly the same as any normal bank. It's all hypocrisy.

I agree with your Islamophobia comment though.

    • I'm not Muslim

The rest of your post confirms this.

But did you know they don't even charge interest to each other if they lend money?

      Incorrect

Even some of the companies / banks.

      Incorrect

It's against their religion / beliefs

      You don't know this

Muslims get a bad rap because of all the news but seriously that is a very small minority

      Heh.

Salawat ala Muhammad wa ale Muhammad

    • This comment have no relevance in this post. Did not neg you though. But please keep things in perspective.

      • Good to pray for the soul of our prophets Inc Jesus when you see mosque mentioned.

  • +6

Great post and great to see OzBargain tolerance at work.

Love breaking fast with my muslim friends. It’s absolutely lovely and welcoming. Sure there’s religious reflection, but they get that from me when they join me for Christmas lunch.

  • +3

So we should promote all charity food events as deal too?

  • +9

I don't know. It is free, it is good, but this is not the spirit of the website. Nothing commercial about these free dinners, while Ozbargain is 'commercial-minded'. I am also not sure how it looks if mosques are swarmed by Ozbargainers looking for free meals with complete disregard of the spirit of the celebration dinners.

Plus this is slippery-slope, like others before me have pointed out, soon we will have people posting all free meals by other religious and charity organisations. If you could buy Eneloop, or cheap flights to Bali, you probably should not take part in charity meals for the less unfortunates.

    • +3

I mostly agree with everything you said. I do think it's a great idea for muslims and non muslims to connect and share in the experience together. But some comments like "great, I'll bring the family down for a free feed" doesn't exactly sound like the targeted audience. There are these sorts of people on a lot of posts though, like the ones that make several accounts to get deals several times or try and make a good deal free with fraud. And yeah, it's more suitable for the forums.

Though, I don't agree that it's a charity meal for the less fortunate. It's been mentioned by muslims in the post that it's not about charity, but community, sharing culture with muslims and outsiders alike, raising heavenly favour by the number of people present etc. I think a church free meal is more exclusively a charity thing, evidence in this forum suggests it's different with mosques at Ramadan.

    • +1

Very well put. People seem to forget that Ozbargain is a commercial website aimed to make money and IMO that does not mix well with charity posts.

  • +4

Free snags at the upcoming polling booths - should I create a post for that??

    • +2

      Ken oath.

    • Free??

    • Yes? Why not

    • Really? I never seen free snags but please let us know where these free snags are.

  • +1

This should really go to the forum. Not really appropriate as a deal/bargain.

  • +4

Sorry but this isn't a bargain, this is propaganda

  • -1

How about donate something to christians affected by easter subday bomb blasts in Sri lanka. It wss islamic suicide bombers who killed innocents.

    • +4

      Nothing to do with this

    • +2

Wtf is wrong with you. Totally unrelated. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

  • +13

I posted this so that people can reach out to people to know them and not just read about them in the media. What better way to do this than to do this than over a meal.

I knew from a start that there will be heaps of negs for this deal. Personally, I don't mind red as it's a nice colour. What I'm more disappointed in is people that post a lot of deals find the need to upvote every negative comment on this and my other deals. Obviously hate reigns.

If there is hate in an online forum then what hope do we have as people to connect?

    • Way to go thumbs up!

    • Obviously hate reigns.

      Haven't you heard?

    • +4

      Don't worry about it.

Postive votes for the deal are still outnumbering negatives by almost 8:1.

The comment section is always a shitshow with these kinds of deals. Unfortunately there seems to be nocure for it. Not really an indication of broader society, I would hope.

    • You have my love and adoration, @dealbot.

      • What will Diana think of your love for another? Let alone Devil :|

        • The Phantom, Diana and Devil are in a very modern open relationship, so no drama.

            @[Deactivated]: I worry for the next generation…

            • @khomeini: When society stops understanding sarcasm or when comments need to be marked as /or-sarcasm the end is nigh.

So in relation to the post: Go there and get salvation and enjoy some food and company :)

              • @sn809: I personally keep getting into trouble with all these chronically literal millenials. Sometimes serious trouble. Believe me, the end is already here.

  • +1

    WTF

Who is doing this? I can feel my religion changing from reading this

    Who is controlling me

I can feel my Christianity leaving me

  • +1

I know they won't turn you away but to be honest the food is provided for the people who have been fasting. If all of us consider it as a deal and turn up to the mosque to eat, the people who have been fasting will be starving for longer.

  • +1

    Not a deal

  • +1

We just need a deal on popcorn 🍿 now.

  • +6

I don't understand the negs for this deal (well, sadly, I do actually understand)

this deal is a bargain because it is for free food following attendance at a mosque during ramadan.

    anyone is welcome to attend.

anyone, being a homeless person or a millionaire.

    it's about community and togetherness.

it differs from a soup kitchen as they are established for the less fortunate.

and I don't understand why people keep equating this deal as being the same as charity kitchens….because it isn't.
