battery is not very big for a 15 inch laptop. 42Wh isn't a lot.

    • True.

It's mainly for being plugged in. I have the same problem with my Inspiron 15 7000.

XPS 15 is a good laptop though. Has 97 Wh in a thin chasis.

  • Why is it 1148 through the link?

    Slow wireless

    • -1

It has AC WiFi how is it slow?

      • +1

AC 1X1 so about 433Mbps Max speed, so technically wireless N would of been faster.

If it was 2x2 woukd of been about 1.73Gbps

        • +11

For the internet, that's more than fast enough.

For transferring large files, you're a glutton for punishment if you want to do it via wifi.

          • -5

@lostn: Only if your in australia as other countries have up to 1Gbps internet

          • @lostn: not rly when decent ac wifi has more possible bandwidth than even gigabit ethernet

        • The mimo antenna configuration on your laptop will only give extra speed if the router has the same or more antennas and supports mimo.

Having a 2x2 or 3x3 laptop will not give faster speed by itself.

          • -3

@spaceflight: Which most decent wireless access points have:

            • Google WiFi 2x2
            • UniFi AC Pro 3x3
            • UniFi AC NanoHD 4x4
            • +2

@asa79: You've listed 3, only 2 of them are targeted at consumers. None of them are an all in one unit which most people have.

Why not look at the cheap modems the ISPs provide plus the cheap ones people buy from stores.

Not sure why the neg vote for pointing out that is slow wireless

That's 4.33 times faster than the fastest NBN plan that is generally available.

        • So you don't transfer files to a NAS or stream anything local?

But then based on your answer you probably don't need fast transfer speeds

          • @asa79: 433mbps is fast enough for a nas. It's 50% of the maximum speed that the ethernet cable can handle.

I don't have anything that I can stream that even needs 1/8 of the maximum wifi speed. You probably don't either because you could run 3-4 8k streams and 8k content is hard to find.

            • @spaceflight:

It's 50% of the maximum speed that the ethernet cable can handle.

i highly doubt you cloud ever reach the max advertised (433mbps) speed with wifi…
i have a 1300mbps wifi but with direct line of sight and 1metre away i could only get ~450mbps real world speed out of it

and also wifi is simplex while $5 ethernet cable is duplex
if ethernet is advertised like wifi, they would be called Ethernet2000 for 1gbps

i guess my point is dont compare wifi with ethernet, but i agree this 1x1 wifi is ok for many consumers

              • @cheapobargainer: Exactly! Because in the real world there are other wireless networks on the same channel and interface from other devices which limit the maximum speed you can get.

And even if you could always get the promised wifi speeds, for that one time ever I need to copy the entire laptop HDD over wifi I think I can wait an extra 30 minutes.
Or I could just plug in a $5 cable.

            • @spaceflight: Guess your NAS is 10/100 then ok

              • @asa79: Guess you are not very good at maths then ok.

433mbps is fast enough for a nas.

That would mean my nas is 1gbps because it would be impossible to get 433mbps with a 10/100 nas

                • @spaceflight: It's funny how people are happy with half specced. Good on you

You probably argue that 10/100 lan is faster then wireless Ac too

                  • @asa79: It's funny how people don't understand the difference between theoretical maximum and real world speed.

You probably argue that 10/100 lan is faster then wireless Ac too

You should stop, we already know you are bad at maths and it seems you can't understand what I've said.

                    • @spaceflight: yea becuase 448Mbps compared to 1Gbps, you cant seem to understand that its slower.

But like i said, each to their own, you can have your slow wireless. Too slow for my needs, but if your happy with a 448Mbps like to your devices, thats fine

                      • @asa79:

you cant seem to understand that its slower.

If you bothered to read and understand you would know I never said that.

Too slow for my needs, but if your happy with a 448Mbps like to your devices, thats fine

I'm happy with what I can achieve and what I need.

You can have as much 2x2 mimo claimed theoretical maximum of 1.73Gbps as you like.
In the real world you will never get that. Your nas can't even provide data that fast because the cable that connects it can't.

                        • @spaceflight: In real world I get faster then 448Mbps on my current laptop wireless. But no point talking to people that dont understand internal transfer requirements

      • -1

Not sure why I got negged for pointing out AC isn't slow. 433mbps is gonna cap any aussie internet speed download speed

  • +1

If only it had thunderbolt 3

    • Why do you need that version of Thunderbolt? It has USB Type C

      • As long as it charged through usb c, I'm happy.

        External graphics card

    GOod bargain :)

  • Can I add a HDD to it?

  • -1

Real 8th gen too. I need one for uni but battery life is more important so not sure if this will do the job right.

    • +2

They should have power outlets at uni.

      • +2

Good in theory, but it's annoying to carry around a charger all day and regularly having to recharge wears out the battery faster (plus, power outlets aren't everywhere so you're always worrying about when/where to charge). Bit of an issue when spending >$1k imo.

        • +1

You probably don't want to carry this around uni. An iPad / surface go should take care of uni needs.

        • You're going to have to charge anyway if you use battery right?

How would this laptop compare to the Inspiron 15 Laptop, similar price point ($999) after discount which is at 50% off instead of 45% off?

This Vostro has better build quality

      • +2

        Why'd they remove the numpad when it's 15.6" :/

        • Struggling big time to find a great 15" laptop with numpad.
Not having the numpad seems to be the norm in flagship 15" lappies.

  • +3

Tempting but I will wait for xps 15 to go on sale.

  • Shipping Box ………….Included in price

    Seems like a great deal.

    • How much is it normally?

  • Got the Inspiron 15 7000 8th Generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8550U Processor (8MB Cache, up to 4.0 GHz) with 50% discount -> from 1.999 to 999.

    Thanks a lot
