Kogan 34" WQHD Curved 21:9 Ultrawide 100hz FreeSync Monitor (3440x 1440) $499 + Shipping @ Dick Smith / Kogan

170

Hello all,

This will be my first deal posted.

Compared to Kogan.com which is $649 + delivery, Dick Smith is holding the same monitor for fairly significantly lower price. However the more recent Samsung LC34H890WJEXXY (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Samsung-LC34H890WJEXXY-34in-WQHD…) for $697 seems to have a greater response time (4ms vs 16ms) and better ergonomics with a swivel and adjustable stand (both have VESA mountings however)

Specs as follows (yeah it's a copy paste from one of the below deals, ceebs rewriting essentially the same info):

Built with a premium Samsung panel
WQHD 3440 × 1440 resolution
Curved, ultrawide screen for immersive gaming
100Hz refresh rate – never miss a beat
FreeSync Technology for responsive and clear gameplay
Speedy Response Time: 16ms | OD 7.8ms refresh rate (let's be real, it's not speedy)
VA Panel for superior contrast
Minimise eye fatigue

Hardware Unboxed just reviewed this, probably not a coincidence. Looks pretty good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YuHbS9WawV4

  • Is the backlight controlled by PWM or DC? I can't seem to find anything anywhere.

It's actually pretty decent value for sub $550 price mark. Does have it's downsides though.

Dont trust kogan, the quality is just not there.

  • Colour accuracy?

I think the Samsung from this deal is worth the extra $150.

A comment mentioned the height adjustment feature on the Samsung is a must have.

    • I concur. Brand name for resale value and also USB-C

      • I am inexperienced with computers, I think it’s the height adjustment that is the key feature (Kogan user manual says “height adjustment - no”). Nothing worse than poor ergonomics, I would want as much adjustment as one can get.

Even though the Kogan uses a Samsung panel I think they probably cheaped our on other components to keep costs down. Samsung monitor is on discount, I reckon the Kogan can get cheaper than it currently is.

    • Not really an issue since this one has vesa mounts, you can get a vesa arm for adjusting tho

    • That monitor is now $714.00 after code

  • I bought this in December it took until March to have a fault free monitor. First one had a faulty backlight and the next 2 had dead pixels. Kogan was good with taking care of them under warranty just took a while waiting for the shipping of replacements.

    • Cost cutting certain components is my guess. A product relies on the some of its parts.
I think Samsung agreed to let Kogan use the panel, knowing full well the Kogan version would struggle to compete (in the market) with the original Samsung.

    • It's good that they send replacements. Much better support than taking a gamble with "perfect" Korean monitors on ebay

Apparently a pretty good monitor according to Hardware Unboxeds video on YT.

On the response time, apparently they used a different method of testing it (? Saw it on a whirlpool comment and HWUBs video didn't show anything out of the ordinary there, rather that it was fairly good for a VA pannel).

The Samsung one's an excellent option, but unless you were looking for something it offers pocket the extra cash (especially if you are already planning on a vesa mount)

  • How does this compare against Samsung 34" (LS34J550WQEXXY) 3440x1440 4ms WQHD LED DP HDMI VESA Monitor? [MSY] (https://www.msy.com.au/vic/clayton/monitors/22487-samsung-34…)
