  • HDD not SSD

    • Click on the MPN option list, thee's a list of different config for you to choose from.

      • would you recommend ssd over hdd?

        • Unless you hate yourself, always. Even a $40 cheap 240gb ssd if you're on a budget.

          • @incipient: I'd prefer to get the cheapest option as I'd probably be installing my own 1TB SSD so paying extra for a 120GB one would be a waste of money.

            • @jv: Ahh yeah I didn't realise the table above was added! If I wanted to spend nothing extra, I'd recommend the 120gb ssd over the 500hdd if you didn't need much space. 120 is quite restrictive however.

We've seen the 240gb ssd version down at $250 before for non-plus, so these are a (fairly small amount) more expensive.

            • @jv: for cheaper option, use a 120GB SSD for OS and apps, plus few TB of HDD for media.

              • @bargaino: Nah, no room…

I have a 1TB internal SSD and an external HDD for secondary storage.

            • @jv: It is more personal preference. You can add 1TB on top as storage and use the 120GB as OS. If it is the same price over 500gb HDD and 120GB SSD, i would prefer 120GB SSD as the hard disk will be more wasted then SDD.

I brought one for my mum as she wouldnt need more than 120GB as she did her back up on external drive, without the need to add anything more, it is enough for her daily use at least for few years I would say

  • Operating System: Windows 7/8 Home/Pro COA - Loaded with Windows 10 Home/Pro

I wish the vendor was a little clearer about what OS these come with.

    • Win 10 as it is just a free upgrade from win 7 or 8

      • Sure, but is it Home or Pro?

They have indicated with other posts they're usually happy to provide Pro on request, but it should be clear in their eBay ad.

Someone's negged my earlier comment - this makes me sad and bruises my substantial ego.

        • I negated your neg because it really does matter if it’s pro to those of us who want to put them on a domain.

        • +3

Ultimately that's because we'll receive (For argument's sake, we shall say) 100 units of the same model. Of this model there will be half a dozen different configurations. Home/Pro, SSD/HDD, 4GB/8GB, 250GB/500GB, etc.

If you make a specific request in Home/Pro we'll typically be able to accommodate, but the majority of customers don't have a preference.

If we give the option, everyone would click 'Pro' because they believe it to be better (Despite having no functional difference for most users), and the alternative would be to charge extra for it, which we don't think is fair either.

          • @Sleeqb7: OK, thanks, that makes things clearer as the eBay ad sure isn't.

While that approach may be convenient for the vendor, there are obvious problems with it. Buyers should be informed precisely what they're buying, and what their options are, without others making judgments for them as to whether it matters or not. It sure matters to me as automatic OS updates are easily disabled on the Pro version.

            • @[Deactivated]: Calm down princess

              • @llmoose: Well you may not care about the folk that get a box with Home rather than the Pro that they may have legitimately expected depending on how they read the ad, but i do as i am virtuous.

Would these be any good as a plex server?

    • +1

Would like to know this as well.
Need to replace my old Nuc that can’t handle h265 streaming.

Will either one playback 4K content with an added graphics card?

      • Me tooo

    • Well I have an old i7 920 which I'm using in my server, with HDDs running off USB. CPU is roughly 2/3rds as powerful as this one, and mine can do about 3-4 h264 transcodes. It struggles through 1 x265, but it can do it.

So I'd say you'd be okay!

I'd recommend HP G1 over the Dell. HP can fit more HDD, slightly bigger case for better cooling / airflow, can fit 1050ti in the 16x slot instead of 4x on Dell.

The Dell looks better externally though.

I have both machines, so happy to answer any questions.

    • +1

The smaller case of the Dell actually helps the airflow through the case. The HP has a little more stagnant air because of the extra space. So I prefer the Dell stock but adding a video card the HP has a lot more room around the PCIE slots and much better air for the GPU… in which HP is easily better.

    • Any room to fit a GPU for a cheapish gaming rig?

      • Yes, you need low profile GPU. I have 1050ti low profile.

If you want to game, then choose the HP over dell.

      • I have the Dell and plugged in a MSI 2GB DDR5 1030 LP video card. I did not get much more performance, but much more noise.

    • Thanks for that.

I've got a Dell 9010 Desktop as a main machine which is just beautiful - nice and quiet and powerful - bought from the same vendor.

But one limitation that bugs me is the limited disk options - i want to keep the CD/DVD so all i've got space for is 1x SSD and 1x HDD.

I can look it up but if you can indicate what SDD/HDD combinations are available for the HP that would be nice. Don't need a video card as not a gamer. Also do you agree with @roller's take re air flow?

      • +1

The HP only has 3 sata ports aswell, so you would need to sacrifice the DVD rom to have the 1xSSD and 2xHDD combo. You can probably try adding in more sata ports via the PCI-E x4 but I haven't tried that yet and I seldom use the DVD anyway.

If you really need a DVD room, you can get an external USB one for like $20 bucks

    • Would you know where to buy mounting screws to make use of the extra drive bays? I believe they use special HP screws that are hard to find but I would be happy to be corrected. Edit: Here is a link to their description but I cannot find anywhere to purchase them online: https://www8.hp.com/il/en/products/oas/product-detail.html?o…

      • +1

I didn't buy any extras. I took 2 from the 4 in the first bay to use it on the 2nd bay.

I used 1 screw for each side - 1 left front and 1 right back to secure it if you know what I mean.

        • Thanks, that is a good idea!

  • Maybe someone can help me with this.

If i bought a box similar to this with say Win 7 Pro, would i be able to upgrade that to Win 10 Pro?

I'm not sure i can, and i know you used to be able to do it with Win 8 Pro.

    • You can get free upgarde if you are on win 7 or 8

      • Oh thanks…

  • What are the risk of using the provided 120gb? Is it highly recommended to change to a brand new SSD?
