    Everyone on the bbq groups says these are really bad

    • How are they bad?

      • havent tried these but some crappy bbq fuel doesnt burn through (ie gets halfway and just stops), burns through too quick so doesn't last at all. some also smoke a lot more.

    • Came here to say the same thing. I see at least one post a week telling me to avoid. There’s a reason they’re getting rid of them for cheap, they’ve been on constant sale for at least the last 2 months.

        Depends on what you’re cooking on and how you’re cooking. If you’re looking to do the snake method on a Weber I would stick with Heat Beads originals for consistency.

        if you're not doing low & slow, you should try some lump charcoal (Gumtree/Google).
        There's the cheap indo swamp wood (mangrove wood ~$25/15kg), or aussie stuff like Red gum, Mallee root (~$40/20kg).

        The indo stuff is good on lamb & beef. it burns a bit slower.
        The aussie stuff is great on everything, it burns hotter & cleaner (less ash). Mallee likes to spark when heating up (especially if you're using a fan/heatgun), so make sure the lids on.

        IMHO lump charcoal imparts a nice smokier flavour then heatbeads.

        lastly get a dececnt thermometer. Inkbird makes really good ones. I've had a dual probe one for 2yrs it's great for monitoring either 2 different pieces of meat (like steaks) or different parts of the meat (thigh & breast for chook, or a whole leg of lamb bone, so if one area is heating too quickly you can either mocve it away from the direct heat or wrap some foil). Being bluetooth you can just connect it to your phone & watch the footy.

  • I use the typical four burner bbq with a hood, one side is grill plate, the other side solid. I space my bricks in a chequerboard over the fire splash plate thingy and put the burners on high for ten minutes and turn the flames off and start cooking when the bricks are glowing (the fat catches fire if you leave the burners on. I leave the burners on the hotplate and close the lid between turning the food to maintain heat. Not the "right" way to grill, but it's simple and quick, gets a great smoke/char happening and I transfer to the hotplate to finish cooking through.
