So, can you comment on the level of Reliability & Usability you got from this one, so far…?

      • +3

I have one almost the same as this, 500gb hdd and only 4gb.

i really like it, pretty powerful etc. 2 things to note though:
it gets pretty hot, as you would expect. uncomfortable in your lap hot. fan is on quite a lot too if that annoys you.

other thing is there was no integrated graphics to switch to which my i5 laptop has. means that when you are just browsing the web etc the battery gets used alot more quickly.

these aren't really issues if you are using it as a desktop replacement but if you are just browsing/light gaming etc i say go for some kind of i5. an 8 thread cpu is probably overkill haha.

  • was about to post this, but i got mine like a year ago for $1100 at DSE, same spec so not really a good deal for me

The only thing doing it for this is the CPU and HDD. It is an HP so beware!

    • its only a 5400rpm….

    • For those who plan on buying this notebook, I highly recommend stress testing the parts just incase… (this should be done for all notebooks).

Anyways, this is a fantastic deal for the price. Not to mention unlike many notebooks, this particular model (DV6-3000 series) is highly modifiable e.g. 1TB 12.5mm drives that go around for $100 can fit unlike most brands, can fit 2x HDD's (by replacing the ODD and buying a $5 external enclosure), 720p screen can be upgraded to 1080p for $130, keyboard can be replaced to a backlit one for $30.

      • where can one find these parts?
and would you have the part numbers, particularly for the backlit k/b & 1080p screen?

or just a nod in the right direction, ebay i assume?

        thanks :)

    • ""It is an HP so beware"" ????
We have a DV6-1128TX and it is brilliant, it is far far better built than my new flimsy Asus I5 machine.
I have owned and repaired quite a few notebooks and I would choose a HP every time.
Every brand of notebook can have a problem, mostly caused by the operator.
      Your warning?? is very unfounded.
      This is a fantastic buy!

      • Yea, agree with your comments on the ASUS.

After about a month using my ASUS i7 I've gone back to using my older Toshiba Core 2 laptop.

Honestly xywolap, if you repaired notebooks professionally you'd know HP consumer grade notebooks are awful. I don't, yet I still usually hear of one per month breaking down within my circle of friends & colleagues. I'd take ANY other brand over HP/Compaq any day!

You need to do some research dude, HP have the worst reputation for reliability of all the manufacturers (check out the Square Trade study or even just google it) & HP Australia refuse to repair many of the known faults on lots of their models; and when pressed by fair trading they simply drag the hell out of the repair timeframe…I've seen it countless times, they are A-holes, just wait til you have a problem & have to deal with HPA.

That's the big downfall, it's ok for a manufacturer to have a few dud units; but to not acknowledge them & jerk customers around the way they do is unforgivable!!!

      • why not let us know which Asus model that was. Unless you are talking about netbooks, I do not think I have seen any better built value for money machines than those that Asus makes.
Just googling your model lead me to a plethora of overheating, speaker, webcam and battery problems.

Oh yeah and Asus models are highly upgradable as compared to HP or Dell. They even promote doing it after the warranty expires in Gaming/Rig Building Competitions

      • This is news to me. ASUS making dodgy laptops? Their reliability was unmatched at the time I bought it, thus the default 2 year warranty. Unless something's changed? I got bought an ASUS i7 Win7x64 laptop 1.5 years ago with virtually the same specs as this computer for $1,400. It's on for an average of 14 hours a day everyday. I have to say it's amazing, never had a problem with it. I use it as a desktop attached to a 24" monitor and can play all the games on max settings.

Can you guys reveal what the issues were?

I got the (now scarce) 3131TX for $600 from DSE's last laptop sale. That had a slightly smaller HDD, an i5 and half the ram. I guess for an extra $300, if you need the higher specs, it ain't too bad. I was happy with the build quality of the 3131 so I can only assume the next model up is just as good or better.

I won't buy another HP notebook. Once bitten never buy. Black screen of death problem with the video chip still lingers.

    HP Pavilion dv6-6023TX $899

This is a far better deal and it's only a borderline bargain in my books, it has the following features:
    15" LED 1366 x 768
Intel Core i5-2410M 2.3 GHz CPU,
    4GB RAM,
    2 USB 3.0
    640GB HDD,
    ATI Radeon HD 6770M 1GB GDDR5

    • Where can u find that deal? Thanks

    • nice AMD 6770M that is a f**kin bargain for the specs. Broden would have been proud. Care to share the link or post as separate bargain. I'm sure few people would love to buy that.

  • DSE online sells the HP Pavilion dv6-6023TX for $899, also some JB HIFI stores have marked down their price.

It's been going for that price for a few weeks already and has been posted as a separate bargain last week

  • I bought one of these second-hand off eBay. From my experience, it's a great little laptop, my only complaints are the crap screen quality (compared to my PC's Dell IPS monitor - very poor colours and viewing angles, and it's glossy) and the fan's a bit noisy at times, mostly in 3D. But these problems are probably endemic to most laptops these days.

It does run Minecraft & Portal 2 nicely (and any other modern game), and the comparatively low resolution is good for my poor eyesight.
