  • Is it better than Xbox X?

    • The xbox doesn't have Dolby Vision when playing from a disc, it only has it for streaming. Price point isn't comparable unless you've got Xbox One S, although there are dedicated UHD blu-ray players that are better than the one x at the %500ish price range.

Yes as the Xbox One X normally goes for around $650 which costs way more than this dedicated UHD BD player.

        • Yes that was a bit weird, could say "price point is comparable to the most popular xbox currently in sale that is often cheaper than this and is clearly the one that was being referred to."

          • @Jackson: The original one which congo was asking about to is the Xbox One X. That console even on sale costs well over twice as much as these UHD BD players. And the Xbox One X doesn't even have Dolby Vision for UHD blu-ray.

    • Price yes.
      But can't play games.
And this is cheaper and a dedicated UHD player

Thanks, but I already have an Xbox X and Sony OLED, so want to know if these are a significant upgrade over the X?
Other than DV, are there any other advantages?

  • That's a great price for the Pana 420. Bought it 2 weeks ago for $240 :(

  • Is LG or Sony better?

Found this link that compares the LG and Sony side by side.

The LG is heavier, wider and looks more "solid" than the Sony. Can't comment on picture quality. LG has optical output whereas Sony's coaxial. The LG comes with Netflix and Youtube apps only whereas Sony has more apps. If you don't need Dolby Vision, the Panasonic is a steal. It has 2 USB ports, with one a USB 3.0 which is missing in high end players.

Good find OP. To me the Sony is the better of the 2 as it has DLNA. Optical audio out is a bit of a waste of time for me as HDMI carries digital sound and video. Optical output would only come into play using an old receiver that has no HDMI ports wouldn't it?

Other than what you mentioned, the LG also has AC wireless which would be faster than the 'n' on the Sony, i doubt this would make any difference unless streaming very large movies or downloading firmware updates.

  • No HDMI included in the box -_-. Can someone recommend a cheap non-crappy quality one?

  • None are region free :(

  • I’ve got an Xbox One X so I’m not really sure if I need a stand-alone 4K BR player.

    • You do if you need Dolby Vision 4K blu-ray.

  • Are these region free for DVD (or can they be)?

    • The Sony is region locked for both DVD and Blu-ray, and I couldn't find any simple hack (e.g. secret key command) although it's been ages since I went looking.

I am waiting for PlayStation 5 as 4k Blu-ray player, hopefully it is better than this one.

    • Crap you have to wait for that as 4K blu-ray has existed in the Xbox One S and X for some time and yet Sony in their wisedom decided to exclude 4K blu-ray in the PS4 and even PS4 Pro. Sony is so out of touch when it came to that.
