    Learn German in no time!

Why do they have to say this? Learning a new language ist sehr schwer!

    • +1

Yes, learning any new language is a considerably commitment, especially if you are older like me and your neurons have a lot less synaptuc plasticity. I personally prefer the old textbook based approach to learning languages, as opposed to 'spongiform' immersion learning.

German/French/Spanish are MUCH easier for Anglophones to progress in than Mandarin or Japanese. No related or shared words in the latter plus thousands of ideograms to learn instead of the Latin alphabet.

      • Mandarin or Japanese. No related or shared words

I find it more the nightmare grammar of Japanese, and the tones that make learning Chinese vocab much slower.
It's not just European languages that are easier. You'll make far more progress in Swahili or Indonesian too.

But shouldn't I learn Arabic if I want to visit Germany?

    • If you want but all you'll be to do is order a kebab.

"The official language of Germany is Standard German, with over 95 percent of the country speaking Standard German or German dialects as their first language."

You will have to forgive my attempt at dark humour as I was merely hinting how my German friends have lamented how rapidly German society has changed in recent years.

    • Nein!

NO!!! Most people in Germany speak Turkish.

      • Probably he or she assumed Turkish people speak Arabic.

        • +1

Nah, Syrian mostly. But Turkish would be handy also!

      • I found the reverse helpful.
My (basic) German came in handy in Turkey, with a lot of returned guest-workers who did not speak English.

Most people in Germany speak Turkish.

I think he is referring to the more recent influx of Syrians, who are largely Arab.

  • thanks for sharing, so far app looks good.
