$310 for a factory refurbished unit??? No thanks…

    • If you buy one full price and anything goes wrong with it under warranty you end up with a refurb anyway.

    • +5

Seems like a ridiculous price for a fixed up 2nd hand formerly broken unit.

      • Incorrect. Factory refurbished could simply be a scratched casing. Broken?

        • Key word in that sentence is "could".

      • +2

Refurbished doesn't necessarily mean 'broken and fixed.' It could mean a number of things, such as the customer returning them because they simply just changed their minds or they found a 'better' deal elsewhere, but due to legal reasons stores in Australia aren't allowed to remarket them or resell them as 'new'.

It could also mean there was minor cosmetic damage, which does not affect the overall performance and quality of the product itself, or because the box had been damaged during delivery. It could also refer to stock that had never been sold and the retailer had returned it to the manufacturer, who had to do a 'check' to verify that everything was in working order - so nothing had been 'replaced' in the first place… (this happens to many TV or computer models, to make way for the newer ones, not sure if PS3 are common though).

The term's fairly broad, overall it just depends on the reason 'why' they had been returned. If it had been repaired, it would probably have been done by a third party company (and not the actual company itself).

They generally have shorter warranty life, but it's all up to the purchaser to decide.

        • +3

They stopped producing fat ps3 ages ago. it's safe to assume theses are formally broken in some ways

        • +1

          Could be.

          Bust most likely broken.

    nvm

I think this is a pretty good price actually. the 40gb phat sells for about $300-$350 used and is much better looking than the slim. this is refurbished so most likely has alot of new parts in it. for $300 shipped it would be good.

    • +3

40gb is the pre-mid2008 model, Wat makes u think the price is good??? No dual shock 3, older processing unit. Think again.

      • +2

        and sucks up more electricity

      • -2

some old models can be hacked, and there are those that can play ps2 games.

        • +3

I think that's only the fat 60gb ones

        • None of the models can be hacked if running on post v3.5 firmware. PS2 game compatible is only supported by the very first batch of PS3 (60GB model, not sure about the 20 GB though).

  • can you upgrade the HDD?

    • +2

Yes you can. You will find a number of guides and videos on it if you Google.

      • +1

And instructions in the PS3 manual too.

    • +2

      Easily.

    • +1

It's easy as, but best to do when you first get the PS3, it took me 2-3 hours to do because I did it 2yrs down the track and there was a lot of downloaded content on my console.

  • +1

Why bother - a 160gb slim is 390 today and tomorrow @HN , this will probably ylod after the warranty.

  • my new console died within about 6 months, the refurb i got sent back in its place has now lasted over 2 years without an issue not saying this is a good or bad deal but theres not much wrong with a refurb

  • +1

A brand new one on Ebay sold yesterday or day before is only $360, an free delivery.

  • -2

this one able to play ps2 games

    • +2

Only 60GB fat ps3 can play ps2 games.

      • +2

…yep, and my old girl is still grinding along happily, with a 500gb drive in it!

    • Nah, I believe the 40gb model was the first one to stop supporting ps2 games.
I know this because I am the owner of one, was disappointed after I found it.

  • +1

Our faulty PS3 was replaced by a refurbished unit at our cost. Within a few minutes it is very noisy. This happens whether it is a game or blu ray that is playing. Sony is unwilling to do anything. Not impressed!

  • +1

    Not really worth it.
You read the reviews on the site, people are getting faulty consoles with similar symptoms to ones I've heard from gamers who got the YLOD then did a DIY repair and only restored half of the functionality.

  • +1

Not a good buy IMHO. Personally had a Ps3 a few years ago that broke and the refurb went straight to ebay!

  • +6

As a ex repairer of PS3s and I have fixed many of them, do not buy these or the 60 gig models. If they have been fixed once they will fail again, 6-12 months tops. All fat ps3s have a fault and even putting new thermal paste on the CPU, GPU wont make them last, just because you have one that hasnt failed just means you are lucky. Ive fixed hundreds of these things and each one had the same problems.

  • +1

Unless there is some hidden selling point, this price is a laugh.

  • hotzone I got a 60gig ps3 when it first came out and its still going strong. I think it could be luck.
Anyhow I missed out on buying a 40gig fat ps3 from gumtree for 200 bucks with 5 games.

  • +1

This has been on sale for months. I remember seeing it for sale on Grays before Christmas when i was looking for my one.

  • When my original 60gig died sony quoted me $250 to fix it with a 3 month warranty, so what 'factory' refurbished these that have a 12 month warranty?

  • +1

One good thing is they are very likely to be 3.55 firmware or under, making them jailbreakable.
If I had to pick out of these or one with 3.6 firmware I'd go one of these any day.

  • +1

    This post just got YLOD

  • +1

I sold my refurbished 40gb with a 500GB hard drive installed for $420 on ebay, so there is a little money to be made here, but not worth the effort in my opinion.

I picked up a new slim 120gb for $300 & a slim 160gb for $350, so this old unit is overpriced.

  • +1

    Better deals elsewhere.

  • +1

    Price is a joke.

  • +1

I bought my 160GB Slim a few months ago now ($328), and it had FW 3.5 on it, which as some might now can still be Jailbroken, in fact 3.55 is the last JB FW.

I personally wouldn't pay $309.90 for and old fat 40GB, seeing as my old (60GB) got the YLOD and couldn't be fixed.

    • can you jb 3.5?

      links to how please!!?

      thanks man

  • the only possible redeeming factor o fthis "deal" is the the firmware might be under 3.41 and could be jailbroken.

    key word = might
