[PC] Free - The Dig (Lucasarts circa 1995) @ Discord

1000

After seeing Indiana Jones and the fate of Atlantis from @Dealbot's post, I was happily surprised to find this one free as well.

Another excellent adventure from Lucasarts though probably not as well remembered as Indy.

A DEEP SPACE ADVENTURE BY SEAN CLARK IN COLLABORATION WITH FILMMAKER STEVEN SPIELBERG

An asteroid the size of a small moon is on a crash course toward Earth, and only NASA veteran Boston Low has the expertise to stop it. Along for the ride are award-winning journalist Maggie Robbins and internationally renowned geologist Ludger Brink.
Once the wayward asteroid is nuked into a safe orbit, the trio conducts a routine examination of the rocky surface.
What they uncover is anything but routine.
Low, Brink and Robbins unwittingly trigger a mechanism that transforms the asteroid into a crystal-like spacecraft. The team is hurtled across the galaxy to a planet so desolate, Brink is moved to name it Cocytus, after the 9th circle of Hell in Dante’s inferno. The bleak landscape was obviously once home to a highly evolved civilization, with remnants of sophisticated architecture, advanced technology and an intricate network of underground tunnels.
But no Cocytans.
Who were the original inhabitants of this once rich empire-turned-wasteland? What are those apparitions that mysteriously appear from time to time? Why have Low, Robbins, and Brink been brought to this place? And how can Low keep his team from unraveling in the face of such uncertainty? To return to Earth, they must dig for answers, both on the planet’s surface and deep within themselves.
From the combined talents of LucasArts and legendary Steven Spielberg comes an epic adventure that plunges headlong into the very core of the unknown. And takes you with it.

Nearly 200 locations and hundreds of puzzles
Robert Patrick of T2 as the voice of Boston Low
Special effects contributed by Industrial Light & Magic
Dialogue contributed by award-winning sci-fi writer Orson Scott Card
Alluring Wagnerian musical score sets the epic tone

Thanks, played all the other classic LA games but not this one.

    • +3

      it is… EPIC! :)

Wow, the memories of coaxing this to run on my old 486! Then, the reward of actually playing through the game. This is a gem from the days when Lucasarts made the best games in the industry.

    • +2

Yeah they were a fantastic developer.

  • Not circa 1995. Precisely 1995.

  • oooh… love this game!!!

  • +1

    100% pure nostalgia! Thanks!

  • My favourite adventure game from that era, love it. Admittedly a lot tougher to play these days though.

  • +1

Brilliant game! Now I wish there's a deal for the Monkey island series too

    • +4

The remastered ones go on Steam sale ridiculously cheap all the time, add to your Steam wishlist and you will get an email about it next time it goes on sale.

    • +7

I suggest you wait for a deal like this one:

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/410097

Comes up once in a while and for $3.12 AUD you would get (on Steam):

      • Dig
      • LOOM
      • Indiana Jones® and the Fate of Atlantis™
      • Indiana Jones® and the Last Crusade™
      • The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition
      • Monkey Island™ 2 Special Edition: LeChuck’s Revenge

Unless they become all free (which I doubt, especially for MI) this is probably the cheapest price you would be able to get them at.
So have patience - a deal like this might crop up again in a sale again.

      • Yeah I'm waiting for something similar again. still a few games to go through in my backlog so they're currently on my watch list.

When massive hype around games was a new thing, this was the massively hyped game.

  • +2

Ohhh memories! When games actually used your brain to explore and solve puzzles.

  • +1

Such a fun game with a deep story. Finishing it without a walkthrough is so hard but worth it.

The intro is awesome, and so is the soundscape. The graphics have aged terribly but scummvm makes it somewhat more manageable.

I remember reading the review on this game in Hyper magazine when I was back in high school.

      Man I loved Hyper magazine

      • haha Hyper magazine ahhh the memories

C+VG before that.. When Aus had no gaming mags.. We used to have to buy pommy mags with lots of Amstrad and Amiga games in it.

  • How the heck do you claim this… It tells me I need to use the Discord app to claim it but I can't use the link in the App.

Also… there is a store in discord? Where?

    • I had a bit of trouble finding it myself. Discord calls it "Nitro" and it will be on the sidebar of your Discord desktop app.

From what I gather, it's a bit like a subscription account somewhat similar to Xbox Gold, PSN, EA Access, etc. all with a monthly/yearly ongoing fee. However these two games, at least, are being offered free, no strings attached.

      • I finally found Nitro, and the game but it tells me its not available for Mac OS (mac laptop - PC gaming at home) but I can still purchase it but for the life of me apart form the Nitro link I can not see how to buy it?

  • Wait, is discord a store-front now?

  • Awesome game! Shame the movie of same game never got off the ground.

  • +3

I'm getting it's only free if you have a Nitro subscription ($9.99/mth)? Am I doing something wrong?

    • Me too. If it requires a subscription, its not really free. I get that people post things that are 'free' when it is free with a subscription. So at least the title should really say that so people dont waste their time?

      • As per the comment below: "Was free unconditional before this morning, now requires subscription"

Deal is now expired, was free without the Nitro membership but as of 1PM AEST the game now requires a subscription.

    • Was free unconditional before this morning, now requires subscription.

  • +1

    That's a shame. I just checked myself. :(

Hope more people were able to get it. It really is a pretty darn good game.

As an aside, even Indiana Jones Fate of Atlantis is getting marked as only Free with a paid subscription. :(

  • This is possibly the first game to ever be on my backlog. I'd forgotten about it, so it's still on it ;)
