After the success of adr8's deal on the Mi Pad 4 4GB/64GB variant someone suggested a deal on the cheaper 3GB/32GB variant and here it is!

According to Chris @ Techtablets this is still the best 8" Android tablet to buy. It has a large developer community with ROMs available at both xda and Xiaomi. Out of the box this is running the Xiaomi EU ROM with Google Play which is an English translation of the original Xiaomi CN ROM.

Features include an 8" IPS 1920x1200 display, 3GB RAM, 32GB storage, MicroSD card slot, 5.0MP front camera, 13.0MP rear camera, AI face recognition unlock, 6000mAh battery, Bluetooth 5.0, USB Type-C and powered by the mid-range Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 octa-core CPU with Adreno 512 GPU.

    That was me! Thank you!!

This looks to be the worldwide/multi-language model, so it means the bootloader is already unlocked?

    • +2

      Yeah the bootloader is unlocked.

  • Any good ROMs going around for this?

    • If MIUI isn't your taste then the MoKee ROM is good for a lot of customisations, otherwise Lineage OS is always good.

    • +1

Havoc Os is awesome on the Mi Pad 4

    • I second Havoc OS. Installed it two days ago and it's made a world of difference.

  • I've been looking for a tablet to read books and whatnot recently (and video, browsing etc). Is this a good jam?

    • It's a budget tablet with unremarkable specs. Price is decent. Tab S4 has been on special for about double this, but much better specs.

      • Jorkus asked if you can read books, browse the web and watch videos. The Xiaomi does those tasks very well.

Pointless to say, oh it's unremarkable get an S4.
Specs are nice. I emulate dolphin for GameCube Games with quite a few running at 60fps on mime so plenty of speed

        • If you want something cheap, sure. If you want value for money, I don't think these are very good value.

You can get the lesser known Chinese brands like Teclast, Chuwi or a bunch of others like it for cheaper than this.

Jorkus asked if you can read books, browse the web and watch videos.

Any tablet can do all of those things. What's the point of even asking if you can if quality is not a consideration?

          • @lostn: These are great Value.
Dearer then a teclast or Chuwi but way less glitches and issues.
And far cheaper than an equivelent specced sammy

            • @[Deactivated]: If you have access to Samsung EPP or Education store (apparently as easy as signing up for a free TAFE course), you can get

              Tab A 10.1 (2019) 32GB - $279
              Tab A 10.1 (2019) 128GB - $375
              Tab A 7.0 32GB - $159
              Tab A 8.0 (2019) 32GB - $239

An apples to apples comparison would be the 8.0 3GB/32GB (Exynos 7904 (14 nm)) which is slightly cheaper.

The main difference being that a Samsung device will give you local 2 year warranty, whereas the Xiaomi is a grey import and warranty is not as straight forward and won't be 2 years. If you're paying in US dollars, it's not going to be a local model. In fact, I don't think there is a local model. You'll be sending it back to HK/CN as opposed to finding a shopping center kiosk.

EDIT: Nvm, the 8.0 is currently out of stock. Though I would gladly take the 10.1 32GB for $40 extra. It has Android 9 One UI out of the box which even my Tab S4 doesn't have yet (since I last checked).

              • @lostn: Good points sir! I stand corrected!

Can you send a link through. Cant find 3gb models only 2gb. And only 1200x800 on the 8.0

Love to look into further to reccomend for friends

I would put the mipad 4 as one of the better tabs out there. Android tabs are sort of going the way of netbooks as they are getting squeezed between phones with bigger screens and convertible laptops. Only Samsung and apple are still actually bothering with high end tablets .

SD660 is plenty good and can do most things without any problems. Recently got the LTE version for bit of watching Netflix and movies in bed and on the go.
It sure beats anything within the same price ballpark.

    • +4

      I have this version.

It's fast, it has great speakers, great battery life
and it has a bright screen.

      Well worth it.

    • +2

It has a great screen resolution for the price bracket. Text is crisp and clear (although I still struggle a little on PDFs fitting one page to a screen, but that's because of my eyes)

  • +4

Nice, clear strike again! Been loving my Mi Pad 4 since the day I got it. Best 8 inch tablet there is!

  • I'm currently waiting for a deal on the MiPad 4 Plus ( I have an ancient tablet with version 3 of Android, and want one with a 10 inch screen that supports the Bluetooth Aptx codec). AliExpress seems to have the lowest prices, but like most online store now, it stealily adds a 10% GST right at the end of the checkout process :( GST should be included in the listed price for anyone with an Aussie IP.

I mainly intend to use the tablet for sending music to my bluetooth headphone, viewing comics, reading Ebooks, listening to AudioBuchs. I'm old fashioned in how I use tech, as well as just being old.

    • +1

I did ask GV for a price on the plus but was hesitant with the price. Their offer was $315.46 US.

    • +1

Can't you do all of the things you ask for on this 8" tablet?

For reading once you try a 8" tab you most likely would not go back to a heavier 10".

      • +3

The extra 2 inches make a big difference for reading comics, 10" is pretty close to the real printed size.

Depends how Thaal Sinestro gets their stuff, some apps make things a bit better for small screens… Google offers "bubble zoom" which makes each text bubble larger in turn so you can read easily on a phone, Comixology I think zooms each panel.

        • +1

Aah, I'm not a comic reader. Thanks for the niche application clarification.

          • +2

@ozhunter68: PDFs are not just comics. Reading pdf books and papers is much better on 10" vs 8". Some websites are also not optimised for phones and tablets and need a 10"+ screen. For everything else I still prefer my 8.4" Galaxy Tab S that had 3 GB RAM at 294 grams 5 years ago.

          • +1

            @ozhunter68:

            I'm not a comic reader.

Ahh, that must be because you have an 8 inch tablet, right? ;)
(Actually plenty of people do read them just fine on 8 inch screens, but it helps to be young and have good eyesight)

"but like most online store now, it stealily adds a 10% GST right at the end of the checkout process :( GST should be included in the listed price for anyone with an Aussie IP."
The next time I order anything from there I'll VPN-ise a non-AU IP and see what happens.

      • VPNs cannot bypass the Australia tax for physical imported items fortunately. Anything sent into Australia gets slugged an extra 10%; only a few niche sellers don't impose it. The Australia dollar keeps on weakening, lowering my purchasing power, and the banksters want to to pass another 3 interest rate cuts this year to further inflate housing prices. Aussie dollar will drop to 65 cents vs the US dollar.

    • +1

So does this include GST? It's cheaper from aliexpress(AUD$241.9, USD$164.9), but not if you include GST…

  • Anyone use this for the purpose of studying and have some feedback? Lecture notes, word processing, etc.

    • +1

Word processing? I couldn't think of anything worse than a tablet for that.

      • +1

It's better than a phone, or not having anything, but I agree it would be painful. Perhaps if you got a BT keyboard, but even then you'd still have to use the android word processing software - which are never as good as the PC ones.

      • +2

With a BT keyboard of course. Would probably rarely use word. Primarily just annotating lecture notes.

        • I'm not a fan not of Apple but the only tablet I'd ever consider presently is the iPad. So much better than any Android tablet I've ever come across. Battery Life alone is some kind of super mojo with them.

          • @[Deactivated]: Mi Pad had better brightness than iPad minis and louder speakers. And $200 less. Excellent alternative

            • @[Deactivated]: If I pick up my inactive iPad after a few days, it has barely lost a charge. My Samsung android will be dead. I like that.

Further, I would have a usable warranty. But this is cheap enough, why not.

              • @[Deactivated]: You have a broken tablet then…

Even my old and annoyingly slow Samsung tablet holds almost complete charge while on Standby for long periods.

  • Just wondering what people actually use these for?

    • +3

If my tablet is anything to go by. Watching movies and tv show. Browsing the web.

    • +1

Them Udemy courses don't do themselves!

  • Currently own tab s2, will this be faster? Should I upgrade to xiaomi?

    • Don't upgrade. Yours is most likely better. The screen is at the very least.

  • Would this be any good as a tablet to Teamviewer into a laptop for a live desktop feed? Would like to use it to display timing data @ racetracks

  • Does this have the proper widevine? ie can watch Netflix in HD? i heard some of these models cant due to DRM

    • L3 so no Netflix HD.

  • This or an ipad air (first gen) i can get for free for my daughter, given i hate apple…

    • Putting any personal bias first before a bargain is NOT in the spirit of ozbargain.

      • but i dont know if the ipad air is a bargain, even if its free, where as this is a pretty decent tablet…

given i havent used many apples, or older apples, just not sure if its even worth bothering with something so old…

  • First new Tab(let) i'll have purchased since a Galaxy Tab P1000 many years ago that can't be upgraded past android 2.3 or thereabouts even after rooting .. but its still comes in useful, and will continue to be.
Many thanks to the OP for this
