Rated 4.4/5 on Google Play and 5/5 on iTunes.

Prevention is better than cure, while myopia is incurable. Designed for children older than 6, parents with young children, and general practitioners, this app displays optically precise optotypes of eye charts for you to check eyesight regularly and detect nearsightedness or myopia accurately and early, so you can take preventive measures and seek help from medical professional early to prevent pseudomyopia from becoming myopia, or prevent nearsightedness from getting worse.

Supported Eye Charts:
1. Snellen Chart, with C, D, E, F, H, K, N, P, R, U V and Z, as defined in BS 4274-1:2003
2. Tumbling E Chart
3. Landolt C Chart
4. ETDRS Chart, with C, D, H, K, N, O, R, S, V, and Z
5. HOTV Chart
6. ETDRS European-wide Chart, with H, K, O, E, P, X, B, T, M and A
7. LEA Symbols for preschool-age children
8. Numbers

Predefined Test Distances:
* 6, 5, 4, 3, and 2 meters
* 20, 15, 12, 10, 6 feet

At exactly 6 meters away from the “patient”, the optotypes on the 6/6 line (Decimal 1.0 or LogMar 0.0) shall subtend 5 minutes of arc, which means that the chart should be sized such that these optotypes are 8.73mm tall, and the topmost (Snellen Fraction 6/60, Decimal 0.1, or LogMar 1.0) optotypes should be 87.3 mm tall. At exactly 20 feet away from the “patient”, the topmost optotypes should be 88.7 mm tall, because 20 feet equals 6.096 meters.

Scenarios:
1. "Doctor" and "Patient".
2. Self-diagnosis with a mirror.
3. Self-diagnosis with a Bluetooth keyboard.
4. Self-diagnosis within arm's reach.

Notations:
1. Decimal (0.50)
2. Fraction (20/40)
3. LogMAR (0.30)
4. Fraction (5/10)
5. Fraction (6/12)
6. MAR (2)
7. VAS or VAR (85)

All charts in any VA notation follow the LogMAR design recommended by the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) to address design flaws in original Snellen chart.

  • I have Android 8 but still,

This app is incompatible with all of your devices.
    Requires Android 5.0 and up

How computing power does it take to display a few patterns on screen and to keep track of scores?

    • Maybe it’s a screen size issue not an android version issue?

Hi all. I'm an optometrist. Everything said in the OP's writeup is correct, but there's one major error of which you need to be aware. Snellen charts don't measure myopia, they measure acuity (clarity). They are tools, not diagnosers. There are MANY MANY reasons why blur occurs, and myopia is only one. Download the app (it sounds pretty good to me) but don't self-diagnose. Go see your optometrist and let them do their job.

Thanks for the clarification (no joke intended).

    • on the question of clarification: How often can you get an eyesight test and get a 'free' bulk billed consultation?
One consult per 12 or 18 months?

Edit: seems to be Medicare now covers 1 consult rebate per 3 years (if under 65 yrs)

A "comprehensive" consultation once every 3 years for under 65, once every year for over 65.
Unlimited (once a day) "brief" consultations - which can cover a script check, or whatever other thing you might want looked at.

At the store I work at, we do comprehensive checks regardless of your eligibility for the full benefit MBS item number (and just get paid half if you've already claimed it elsewhere).

        Hi Wally

The correct answer to the question 'how often can you get an examination', is 'as often as is clinically necessary'. The Medicare rebate varies (full fee every 36 months for healthy person < 65, every 12 months for 65+) but there are many item numbers which relate to chronic conditions or new symptoms, and many 'follow-up' item numbers for ongoing care. Please do not limit the frequency of your visits according to Medicare's schedule as they just had to make an arbitrary judgement of fair time. Your optometrist will bill the appropriate item number according to your reason for being there.

        Cheers

A little misleading "Detect Myopia App" - if you test vision at 6 metres this is true. 6 metres is close enough to optical infinity - ie looking into the distance. This is the natural relaxed position of the optical system of the eye when you have "normal" vision.
However with myopic "short sighted" persons - the focal point of the optical system at rest is closer than infinity. Therefore if testing vision when the object is 2 metres away and you have mild myopia the level of visual acuity may be recorded as normal. But when visual acuity is recorded at 6 metres for the same person with mild myopia the visual acuity will be recorded as sub optimal.

What this app is doing is testing visual acuity - which is the degree to which the optical system can see detail. Myopia and other disorders can be a cause of sub optimal visual acuity. Ideally the test should performed at 6 metres.
