  • Personally wouldn’t risk it with an import . Might wait for an AU stock to go on sale

    • +1

      Genuine question: risk what?
Are warranty issues common with these? I've got 4 Chromecasts and 7 Google Homes and haven't had any issues personally.

    • Is there going to be anymore AU stock? This is a discontinued product after all.

      • @puffinfresh I have had few grey imports from hogan and claiming warranty has been a nightmare with excuses hurled left right and centre

Serious question - I know I can do my research and I own a Chromecast Ultra but why would anyone buy this over a normal Chromecast?

    • +4

to convert speakers that are not connected to a TV into 'smart' speakers?

My dad has these speakers which are connected to the old style CD-players and a Chromecast Audio has given them new life - as it's so much more convenient to just start spotify and cast to these speakers.

      • +1

thanks. so, the normal chromecast can't do that?

        • +4

The normal Chromecast output is HDMI. You won't normally find those on speakers

          • @lawyerz: Or use a Google home mini to do it over Bluetooth

            • +2

@Thatbargainhunter: Audio over bluetooth is not the best way to stream. The Chromecast audio streams the music directly from the internet and converts it to an analog signal through a 3.5mm plug. Better sound quality than bluetooth and you don't have to keep the phone within bluetooth range while playing.

              • @trippy: I know that.

Google home streams it directly from the internet and converts it to a Bluetooth signal to a Bluetooth speaker. No phone required.

                https://support.google.com/googlehome/answer/7672356?hl=en-A…

I do know that if your an audiophile, you would want the analogue signal. But for the average user - to me this solution is fine.

                • @Thatbargainhunter: I've tried this and it's broken. Compatibility with different Bluetooth devices was horrid, and they fixed that, but now it's totally broken when included in a speaker group. Multiroom audio is half the reason I use Google Cast.

              • @trippy: You can also stream lossless formats such as FLAC for full CD quality audio, or better.

  • +5

    Definitely worth having one around.

Basically if you love your old stereo or want to buy quality second hand audio gear but really want to add streaming, this is easiest way to get decent sound without spending much more money on a streaming dac…

  • +2

It seems odd they've ditched this, but presumably Google want you to buy one of their own "smart" speakers in the future. There are some devices that serve a similar purpose, but I'm not aware of any device with such functionality to turn a good audio system into a streaming device. Shame.

    • +3

Indeed, why would you want a device like this when you could buy a Google Home Max? /s

      • +1

A Google home max sound can't beat a solid wood old school tall speakers.

  • +1

I almost want to buy an extra one for spare in case the old one breaks and won't be able to get this anymore haha

    • I bought my first one for about $40 off eBay and another 3x from Gumtree for $20-30ea.

Only really use two of them regularly, the other two I bought since they announced discontinuation. Definitely good to hoard backups. They're perfect.

  • Would this allow casting music through Youtube Music if I use the free account (non-premium)?

    • +1

      Yes

  • I don't understand these. Would it not be better to just have a normal Chromecast for playing music which can be had cheaper than 50 and have a UI as well.

    • +3

It basically allows you to pair up your existing high-quality speakers directly to the chromecast eco-system, which is currently quite difficult to do. Outside of the this device, you can either extract the audio from the HDMI stream on the Chromecast, or pair up a Google Home with a Bluetooth device to act as the audio out.

    • Normal Chromecast can't be used in multiroom audio in Google app. This is perfect if you want to stream multiroom to multiple Chromecast audio or Google homes.

      • Fair enough I'm guessing the quality would also be better due to 3.5mm vs hdmi audio extraction.

  • +2

Chromecast audio has a better quality DAC than normal Chromecast, just google and you find the difference. As per name it is more for better audio experience.

  • +1

Should correct myself - Chromecast doesn't have DAC at all so audio quality will depend on a device it's connected to.

    • Hold on… no DAC? So how does the digital signal from the internet get converted to the analog 3.5mm output? Remember that this device utilises Wi-Fi to stream the music by itself directly rather than depending on a phone or similar through bluetooth.

      • It does have an onboard dac but it also has an optical out so you can use your own if you want. Personally I can't hear much difference but then I am old and partially deaf!

  • Solid units too, I had one chromecasting lullabies to an old speaker in my daughters room 12 hours a day for nearly 2 years.

  • Ordered one last week (same price).
Arrived yesterday. Comes with a free AU USB adaptor for anyone that's interested.

  • Isnt that the normal price still?

  • Thanks OP. Bought two more backups.

  • Is that $49 delivered ("Free delviery requires $99 Kogan first subscription")
