If I already have 2 google mini homes, is this worth it at all?

    • +2

I'm thinking the same, I got more minis in the Spotify deal, which has proved useful, but I just can't imagine any use cases where a screen is going to help me. The reason I am using it is because I don't have hands free or I want to add something to my shopping list from any room.

For anyone looking to get the most out of any of the Google products, if you don't use it for your shopping list you are missing out. Really slick interface to use.

      • I'd find it useful for a visual display of kitchen timers, and maybe the weather, but not enough to warrant replacing a full size Google Home with something of lesser sound quality.

        • I have 2 minis too and decided on the Hub as well from the earlier TGG deal over another regular Home.

I like the interface and the digital photos frame aspect of it. Have it near our TV and the kids love looking at the photos.

We have a few lights and smart switches and also Logitech Harmony set up so can use a routine to turn off all lights and TV, Fetch box, surround and ambient LED lights behind our TV as we get up to go to bed etc.

      • by shopping list, are you referring to Google Keep?

        • +2

Nope. It's the google shopping list. You can add things via voice commands, but you can't remove items. It could be better, but it's really handy to walk around the kitchen checking for what you need to do just before you go shopping. And great for random things you find you need and don't normally buy.

@lochiebags: Yeah exactly, really useful. It's easy enough to remove the items on your phone once you are at the supermarket. It's a bit weird that they haven't made an app for it, and you use it through the web client.

I don't use it just before I go do the shopping, I add to it when I run out of something, usually in the middle of cooking - I never get to a notepad to write down what I need, but if I can shout it at an inanimate object while I've got my hands full with food/utensils/children that is a much better option.

    • These products are a 'nice to have', not essential at all. This means that having more can't hurt

  • Is there any battery base for this hub? I'm just trying to think about how to use it and would be good to be able to move it around.
For example, I can think of having it in the living area, but then move it in the kitchen to help me with recipes

Alternatively, does anyone know if there is a way to repurpose an old tablet to something similar to a home hub?

    • it is not hard to repurpose an old tablet into hub

just plug into an power outlet permanently…
      and enable google assistance
and then setup your voice for "ok google" command etc..

disable lockscreen timeout or make it really long like so it doesn't lock immediately.

Also plug the audio out into an external speaker if you want better sound
and get a stand for the tablet or phone etc..

      Also install Google Home app.

now you got something similar to the google hub.
it is not exactly like it, but you can do some of the stuff like look up youtube, weather, web etc..
and you can install more of your own apps which the hub cannot do.
