Wow, wow, wow, that's a great price!

    • +26

I did a quick search and went back as far as a couple of years ago and couldn’t see any cheaper prices for the models I’ve put in the title. Happy for you to prove me wrong though?

  • +3

And don't forget if you signed up for JB newsletter you get a code for an extra 5% off so that takes the ATH-M40X TO under a $100 a pair

  • +1

How long does it take to receive the 5% off code? Seems like it's not automated.

    • +29

Turns out that the code is generic - 92LCJF5X59B55X.

Wow, it worked! Thanks mate :)

    AUDIO TECHNICA M40X PROS
Below is the list of pros offered by Audio Technica m40x:

Clear sound, in fact, one of the best you will get at this price.
Very comfortable, thanks to the soft padding on the headband and ear cups.
Highly durable since they are made from pro-grade materials.
Since they come with swivelling cups, they are ideal for one-ear monitoring.
Highly portable, as you can fold these headphones.
    Lightweight.

    AUDIO TECHNICA M40X CONS
Here are the cons of Audio Technica m40x:

Not the best choice for bass heads.
The carrying case that comes with the headphones feels a little flimsy. It is best you buy a separate case.
Cables are proprietary and you cannot use cables other than those made by Audio Technica.
Ear cups swivel only 90 degrees.
    Impedance is slightly low.
Cables are long and can get unwieldy at times.
    AUDIO TECHNICA M50X PROS
The pros of Audio Technica m50x are:

    Powerful bass.
    Good stereo imaging.
    Excellent soundstage.
    Comes with three cables.

    AUDIO TECHNICA M50X CONS
The shortcomings of Audio Technica m50x are as follows:

Not the best choice if you want neutral tones.
    Too much emphasis on bass.
    Largely made of plastic.
    Isolation could be better.

The Plantronics BackBeat Pro 2 would be a better option over the M50xBT.

    • +1

Would recommend swapping the earpads on the m40xs out with brainwavs hm5 pads or zmf cowhides. Personally can't wear the stock pads for more than 30 minutes at a time without discomfort. You can find shorter 3rd party cables on amazon and ebay relatively cheap too.

      • +1

I think you will have to do some research on user experiences (google/reddit) with those pads, specifically for comfort.
If I remember correctly the brainwavs pads are a slightly loose fit on the M40x, therefore people were saying they got frustrated with them coming loose (coming off of the headphones).
Edit: another option is MSR7 pads.

    • Comment removed. Should have read the comment above this first.

    • Addressing one of your listed cons; it’s very simple to remove the clip inside the headphones that requires proprietary audio cables be used.

I did this in order to use a short 5cm audio cable to attach to an MPow Bluetooth receiver, which I’ve just velcroed to the side.

  • +1

    Amazing thank you!

  • +2

    M40x's are AMAZING!

    • I concur

    • I bought a pair about 3 years ago and I'm happy with them and I bought another pair for my son as he was allways borrowing mine

      • I use them for audio listening and they were great for on the plane too.

I was going to get a mod mic and use that for gaming, but my Hyper X Cloud 2's are good for that too haha.

    • +2

I disagree. Great price, but audio quality I would describe as good "for this price point". Imho it's far from being good in its own right. Sold mine.

Hence I think they are overhyped.

      • +1

Obviously if you're going to spend $800+ then you will find better quality. But for most people, especially people on here/people using phones etc, these are probably the best headphones they'll ever use.

        • No doubt. I just think it's worth spending more if it's quality you're chasing (not $800 though, that wouldn't be a fair comparison)

If you're after value, they are a no brainer

I agree they will suit most people. Just trying to warn those few that might buy on a whim due to the hype and expect better

  • Impressive deal!
    Thanks OP

    I'm waiting for a deal on the open design one… the ATH-AD500 & 700

  • +1

Thanking you. Been waiting a while to get the red M50x at a good price

  • Really tempted to purchase M40x’s. Saving my money towards something else currently. Tempted again while writing this comment to buy a pair for a family member..

  • These ANC-500BT’s are also $101 if anyone is interested.

  • +5

I have been sitting here at my computer, agonising ALL DAY as to what pair of headphones to buy. Reading review after review after review on amazon and the like, with what seemed like no end to this hell in sight. I gave up. I put a cheapo pair of $46 monitoring headphones in my amazon cart (that i was not happy with, but didn't want to get burned spending 3 times more on something that would probably just end up the cable failing on me again anyway), and was just about to click "proceed with purchase"…. when I thought I would check the ozbargain mainpage, one last time.

….and EUREKA ..:o there it was! a deal on decent quality and brandname headphones just posted, and with headphones that [drum roll!] have detachable & replaceable audio cable. and not to mention, many very very pleasing-to-read reviews.

I am so damn happy to see this deal before purchasing the cheap ones I was originally going to get. The 40% off and 5% off, brought these JUST into range for my poor soul to be able to buy them. xD Thankyou.

    • +3

Reading your story about putting el cheapo headphones in your cart made me squirm a bit (inside my head).

    • If u thinking of buying ATHLS50IS, they are sensational

  • time to go in tomorrow and try them on

    • Been reading reviews of it. I was about to pull the trigger on QC35v2 but bought these instead. Waiting for them ready a pair for pick up…

    • Thanks, I got the ANC900BT with a 5% off egift card cost $270. less than MX3 or QC35ii deals
      stereo.net.au review
      "Conclusion
While a pair of AT's latest might cost $100 more than the Bose QC35, the added features such as customisable audio pass-through, 35-hour battery life, and the dedicated listening button, the ATH-ANC900BT is unquestionably worth the few extra bob to be your new travel headphone.
With a healthy dollop of bass that doesn’t detract from the excellent Audio-technica house sound, and noise cancelling that competes and exceed the performance of the big boys, ATH-ANC900BT deserves a StereoNET 5-Star Applause Award."

      • Hey mate, where did you get the egift card from? So it's possible to get them 50% off?

    • Update: sounds awesome. IMO sounds better than Sony XM3 (not bass heavy, XM3 is a bit muddy) and Bose QC35v2 (bass not as flat). Will test noise cancelling on the train. Excellent price $284 with the 5% off code from above.

      • I’m looking at getting these or the sennheiser 550s

      • How’s the noise cancelling

        • Tested them out this morning on the train. Pretty good. On par with my old QC25. Doesn't beat QC20 in-ears though, but the trade off is having no wires and not shoving something into your ears (in-ears is much better if you wear glasses). I say it's worth it, especially if it's under $300, can't beat that!. Very pleased with my purchase.

I'm going to go around the office today and do more testing with Bose and Sony equivalents.

  • Is the M50xBT worth buying at $195?

    • +1

      Its a steal

    • +1

I’ve been eyeing them off since they were released, and the cheapest I’ve seen them before was $268. The last thing I need is more headphones, but at $186 I couldn’t help myself.

    • wish they had usb-c

  • +1

I almost bought some M40x's when the email came through but stopped myself. Kinda want to buy some HD58X's instead.

    • +1

Do it. The AT are overhyped because value is good. But they don't sound that great.

      • +2

Ended up ordering the M40x's. Probably a late night purchase that I will end up regretting but for $96 can't really go wrong, can always sell them later.

Still want the Sennheiser's but they are expensive at the moment with the state of the AUD.

        **

Should add at the moment I'm using ANC headphones, great for public transport but not as good at home.

    • +2

I have the M40x and the 58x, but they can't really be directly compared. Closed back vs open back, 40's will run off anything but the 58x needs minor-moderate amping (to sound as good as they actually are), and the 58x's cost quite a bit more (but are absolutely worth the money, no question).

  • +1

Ah so tempted to buy the M40x’s

  • Been chasing a set of quite comfort 25’s
    And just seen this post
I heard audio technica has a good alternative called an ANC9
But that was years ago, is this still relevant ?

I’m chasing good noise cancelling headphones for planes and hostel sleeping

    • +2

For noise cancelling, Bose still be the king.

      • -5

Are you kidding me? Ever tried Sony M3 bro? Bose QC35 ii is far from that ANC. Or are you talking about the very near future Bose 700?

        • I've used both, the noise cancellation is near identical.

        • I agree with you, QC35 II and WH-1000XM2 is the benchmark on ANC.

What I mean is Bose brand is expert in the field in general. And in particular, QC25 is far better than ANC9.

And I don't understand what you talking about the very near future Bose 700? Are U OK?

        • +1

Don't know why you're getting down voted, I've read about a dozen reviews and they all say the Sony XM3 noice cancelling is better than the QC35s although not, "very far from that ANC." The QC35s iis are 2 generations older than the Sony's. That said I do find the Bose more comfortable.

          • -4

@munted: Just so many iBose around here. Dare to claim used both headphone and identical is extremely ridiculous and blind fan boy.
The net superior active noise cancelling level of the M3 is undeniable
The QC 35 ii is updated by years to M3 but from the 2 brand they are the latest. So we have to compare them or else there is nothing to compare with the M3

  • I bought the olive green M50X back in 2016, but the red one looks SO GOOD. So tempted ugh..

    • i got the olive green as well, if i was to buy again under $250 i would take ATH-MSR7 or cooler master MH752 , the MH752 i got of Mwave for $69 a couple of months back

  • Which ones are better and worth getting, the M40x or the M50x? Have been waiting for a deal on the M50x but now thinking for the price that the M40x might do.

    • I want answer to same question

    • That was what I was deciding on also. In the end, I took the M50X out of cart, and put M40X in its place! (purely because I was reading the M40X's are slightly less bass-ee, and tuned more evenly/flat). …which is good to me, I cannot stand too much bass. $101.32 including delivered, and I can't wait :) And this also leaves me money towards an attachable mic, if i decide i need one.

      • check out some reviews on Cooler Master MH752 and they have detachable mic

        • Thanks very much for the suggestion, I will do just that, thanks. Quality wired headphones, and then adding an attachable mic is definitely the way to go IMO.

        • Wow. Those headphones seem decent also (been reading the reviews). If the audio cable can be removed and replaced, that is definitely a pair of headphones I would consider in future.

    • +1

M40x has superior & balanced sound IMO. M50x is similar, but has more bass, which affects the quality of mid to high frequencies.

  • +1

Sensational deal. I was eyeing to buy myself another pair of ATHLS50IS. It is a sensational headphone. Sounds heaps better than many earphones that are priced hundreds of dollars.

    Thanks OP

  • +2

Daaaamn what a deal. $141.93 for M50x's. Thanks OP.

  • I bought the M50 on Amazon USA website for around 120 AUD when the dollar was stronger and sold it couple of years later for the same price, found the sound too neutral for my taste and the headband was far too tight. The momentum over ear, if you stretch your budget, are far better

  • Really happy with my m50x's. For a $150 they're a good buy. They clamp a little tight for me (slightly large head) but it's only an issues if I wear them for extended periods of time, such as 2 hours plus. I have a set of momentums which I believe sounds worse, but that's my opinion. The momentums also clamp harder and hurt a lot sooner than the m50x's. Might be worth it going in to your local JB and trying them on. I was looking at buying $300+ headphones before I tried them.

    • I've both, and agree with you.

    • Are you talking about momentum over ear version 2?

  • +1

Years ago when the M50s went for about $120, the main discussion was coiled or straight cable. With the M50x the prices never came down close to this and $150 looks like a good price. Saying that, finally bit the bullet and went for the M40x instead. Mainly to do with its more neutral/monitor characteristics, to be used for podcast/editing at work. At least that's the plan for it's use.

    • +1

I got M50X an year back for $150 from Addicted to Audio. This is the closest that came near to it.

  • Ah those deals are awesome but I want the gaming ones :(

    • +2

Buy the M50x or the M40x and a modmic, better than any gaming headset

      • I thought about it. I already have an m30x which is still going great. I just want a separate gaming one and open air is amazing.

        • Check on steelseries arctis pro wireless

  • +1

After getting the m50x home I am shocked at how bad my previous headphones were in comparison

    • Just wait till you take the next step up

  • I am late to this but these are amazing deals. I got the Audio Technica ATH-M50x Monitors as a gift (i assume at full price) and they are outstanding. I use them for music as well as gaming

  • Any of these cans suite an Office space? Particularly interested in Bluetooth but with little sound leakage. So not disturbing others near me.

Otherwise has anyone used their buds - which are also on sale? I have a pair of triple drivers right now from 1More, but the right earpiece just went and they have no Au support. They will only sent to an American address… :-(

    • They're closed headphones so sound won't leak, but isolation isn't fantastic if you're trying block outside noise.

      • I had Bose QC25 that were Closed. Good noise cancelling, but some sound definitely leaked at anything over 30% volume. Not much, but enough for the workers next to me know what I was listening too.

I have some Beyers at home, same thing. Perfect gaming headphones, not so perfect office.

I am talking quiet office, not a sales office. Really need a solution that isn't in ear buds, which get uncomfortable.

    • The Athls50is on sale here are insane earphones. They are great.

  • The M40x are amazing. I purchased these headphones at JB for about $130 2 years ago, they still hold up really well in terms of wear, and i've had no issues with them whatsoever, its nice to have the detachable cables and the phono jack that screws into the mini jack, so I can use it on my guitar and computer, then screw the phono jack off and use it on my phone / other devices. Sound amazing, even for the $130 i paid for them, if you're looking for a pair of headphones that'll last, with features like detachable cables, carry bag, etc. these are definitely my recommendation.

    • Apparently some had issues with the hinge snapping with early models.
Audio Technica fixed the issue by extending the metal band through the 2 screws which was the weak point, and made sure to replace those who experienced the breakage with the revised model. Good work on AT’s part.

I’m sure most people are gentle enough and are happy with the quality, but AT responded with a solution for those who had an issue.

  • I have been reading a fair few reviews on the ATH-M50X and it rates really well for critical listening for its price, does anyone know if these would be a better option for critical listening compared to Sennheiser HD8 DJ's?

In my mind it sounds wrong that the ATH-M50X are cheaper than my HD8 DJ's but might be superior.

  • Anyone getting an error when trying to pay via mastercard at checkout?

    • I am trying to order ATHLS50IS and its declining to post. Available only for pickup.

    • Error checking out with master

  • +1

    I think ATH-MSR7 at $161 are a steal.

  • Thanks OP. Got the M40x for $91.51 via Suncorp Rewards

  • OK had to ring my local JB and ask to set a pair of M50xBT's. Luckily the dude i spoke to was a GC.

    These headphones are the jam!

  • Hi all has anyone had any experience with the anc900 noise cancelling headphones?

  • ended up getting the M50xBT because i had a gift card so ended up $140 all up. if anybody wants a pic of my receipt PM me and i can share. only saying that because awhile back i remember somebody getting a price match with a JBHIFI receipt so good luck :)

  • The the last pair of M40x headphones I had put a lot of pressure on my ears. They sit on your ears not over them, & the pressure gets a bit much over 2 hrs

    • Should be able to stretch them out, I've used the M50x on longhaul flights with no real issues

      • Maybe they have really big ears

  • wouldn't mind those sports ones….
need something to pair to my Fitbit Ionic.

  • +1

How's the sound quality of the m50bt compare to sony 1000xm3?
