  • Pretty good deal if you can dodge annoying qc issues

Very good price for what it is.I bought one during deals previously. The i5-8300H model is very quiet , deadly silent doing regular stuff and the performance blows the majority of the 13' ultrabooks out of the water. The speakers are bad,I have issues with audio popping, and if you remove the waxx driver, the speakers are too quiet. The battery life is outrageously good. Yet I have to return it because the screen hurts my eye so bad, because Dell uses IGZO LCD from Sharp, and it uses PWM to regulate brightness.

    • Should I buy it, I am thinking about it but will they drop the price further before EOF?

I had an XPS 15 9575 2 in 1, and while it was a fine machine with a lot of "advanced technology" like maglev keyboard and aforementioned igzo display, also some cooling shenanigans, I still ended up getting rid of it because none of these so called advancement are conducive to good productivity.

so I got rid of it and bought a Precision workstation for $1100 with i5-8300H and while it is a bit bulkier, it is superior to xps in every way. keyboard is way more comfortable, screen is sharp, accurate and has no pwm, reasonably bright at 300nit. completely silent under normal workloads, and lasts 9+ hours from one charge. the case is never too damn cold to the touch like machined aluminium of XPS. also, 3 year on site warranty. I am never getting another XPS haha

      • I may wait if the price goes down bit further, then I prob will grab one though, but still a great laptop overall, I have the XPS13 2015 just looking for an upgrade.

        • I bought this laptop at this price many months ago, it has not dropped to this price again since. I'm a recent convert to the Shopback thingo and if you can get an extra 12% back, it would make this XPS 15 an absolute cracker of a deal. I love this laptop, I only ever use it for light work, watching videos, net surfing etc, but it has a good screen, descent speakers, keyboard is well laid out and feels good. There's no better 15" laptop to travel with, it's so light 1.8KG and has a small footprint. You can also use a USB-C PD (45W+) charger to charge the XPS 15 (and phone), so only one charger needed for both.

          • @PukeyLuke: Cheers, mate, I am no in rush of getting a laptop but if it still drops prices, I will buy one.

          • @PukeyLuke:

Don't be so sure, ASUS ZenBook 15 UX533FN is lighter and smaller.

    • Do you notice PWM, most people don’t?

      • Yes, I guess so. I am very sensitive to PWM and I can't stare at a "bad" screen(OLED is big no-no for me) for too long, otherwise I will get headache and eyestrain, my eyeball start to hurt too after like 20 minutes.

  • so im searching for a new laptop this week and also came across this deal, I could use some help making a decision.
Not being completely tech savvy, I am unsure if i should go with the XPS deal posted or this Inspiron 15" 7000:
    https://www.dell.com/en-au/shop/dell-laptops/inspiron-15-700…
I only know enough to compare simple things. The Inspiron has 16gb ram, 512gb ssd, i7-8565, 2gb graphics card.
Can the battery be upgraded in the Inspiron?
Can I add more ram to the 1x16gb Inspiron?

Im just starting to realise how expensive JB Hi-Fi is and I appreciate any help/advice

    • I would go with the XPS over the Inspiron.

      XPS is much better quality
45W i5 is most likely going to be better than 15W i7
RAM can be upgraded for cheap
SSD can be upgraded for relatively cheap
MX250 is a pretty worthless GPU

    • If you want bigger battery but still at an affordable price, probably get the vostro line

      Dell Vostro 7590

The 97w battety is only available in the 2k configuration though, but then you get powerful specs of i7 9750h, gtx 1650 and Ram is 1x16gb hence you can another stick. This is on par with the new inspiron 7590 and xps 7590 which cost a lot more.

This is the new model with aluminum case so it could be better than the old inspiron.

      • Look so like the XPS has the same 97W battery (well that’s what it says on the specs on Dells site)

    • You won’t need to upgrade past the 16gb, and you prob can’t.
      Can’t upgrade the battery.
The i7 is a lot more powerful the the i5 in the XPS. The i7 8565 is a beast for laptops.

The XPS has half the hard drive space too.

The XPS is meant to be a more premium unit than the Inspiron but I’ve had an Inspiron for years and it’s been great. Only issue really is if you are going to use it via battery power, the XPS will last a lot longer on battery than the Inspiron.

Go to JBHifi and compare the looks and screens of the two, have the screens on full brightness and see if it’s ok.

For me, even though specs may lean one way, the XPS would be my pick of the two. It’s plenty powerful enough and the battery life is what I’d want. And subjectively, it looks better.

I honestly don't see the appeal of this but it could serve a purpose I don't understand. It has integrated graphics and an 8th gen i5 when you could get say a Metabox with a 9th gen i7, gtx 1050m, 8gb ram and 512gb ssd all similar or better for under 1400 from metabox direct or from Kong Computers.

    • I've never heard about this brand. Have you had experience with their laptop?
I'm looking for a thin and light gaming laptop and their price is a lot better compare to the razer blade. Do you have any other suggestion?

      • +1

I have owned 3 Metabox/Clevo they are great I've never had a problem, they have been known also as Clevo in the past if you have heard of them before a rebranding in Australia. They are also made to be easily customisable to upgrade some parts like hard drives and memory in the future. If you check forums like whirlpool etc Clevo/Metabox have always been the best bang for buck laptops if you don't care about flashy design.

    • I've never heard of metabox before.
I had a quick look and the alpha-x series with 9th gen i7, GTX 1050, 512gb ssd and 8gb ram is $1384. Upgrade to 16gb ram for $65 extra.
      Thats $1449 + $32 postage.
      Seems like an absolute bargain.
The only thing I'm unfamiliar with is the battery life which is a 4 cell 48.96Wh… is that bad?
It won't be used for gaming.

buy from Kong Computers for free postage

      • That's pretty bad. Smaller than the XPS with a more power hungry processor on top.

Battery is going to be 2-3 hours with light usr. Much less if you're doing anything intensive.

If you're not using it for gaming don't bother (unless you have another reason to need a GPU). Even for gaming, the GTX 1050 is really not good compared to the newer 1650's, or older 1060s that you sometimes find for around that price.

  • Thanks for your help everyone. I stayed with the XPS choice and I grabbed a refurbished XPS 15 with 4k touch screen, i5 8300, GTX 1050, 8gb ram, 256gb SSD for $1699 from Kogan.
