Sydney to Shenzhen (Hong Kong) from $618 Return Inc. Tax on Hainan Airlines

90

Hi folks, I just spotted fares between Sydney and Shenzhen from $618 return inc. tax, for travel between 1 September - 31 October, 2011. These are direct flights.

Shenzhen is only a bit over an hour away from Hong Kong by train, so this a very cheap and convenient way to get there. Hong Kong is a great starting point if you're planning to hop around Asia… And perhaps even over to Europe.

I've done a bit of research in regards to Hainan Airlines and these fares in particular, so check out the Flighthacker blog for further details.

Shenzhen is China proper = Visas and whole lot of hassle.

    • Yeah you'll def need a visa to get into Shenzhen, so keep the extra costs in mind

    • +1 You'd only avoid the visa if you are transiting Shenzhen. But only if you stay within the airport transit area, not travelling by land to HK, e.g.

Or you were going to China proper anyway and will be getting a visa.

For anyone wondering, IIRC visa to China is 50 AUD. I forgot how long it takes to get the visa, but I think it was only 2-3 days (you can pay extra to get next day).

A bit more than that now, closer to $80. They also charge a service fee.

However if you hold another passport, say a SE Asian one, I think you can get it cheaper. The fee structure like many countries is reciprocal, you charge us, we charge you.

        • It's pretty easy to get a china visa, I dont see it as a 'whole lot of hassle' although it is an additional cost.

        • You probably had better luck, or perhaps they were just really "strict" back in 08 before the Olympics.

But you still have to compare this to Hong Kong where its visa free. No hassles, just buy the ticket.

        • Yep, they cracked down in 08, very easy now, apply before you leave at your local office. But they change the rules all the time, easy right now but may change.

  • • Taxes are included except where local airport taxes are collected at check-in time.

Who knows how much the taxes are?

  • This is part of their SYD - ShenZhen - HGH route.

  • Never heard of them until now, very good reviews/ratings:

    looks promising.

  • i wonder if you can go to shenzhen, change to train then get to the hk border like lo wu or lok ma chau without any visa (like what you can do via macau)

  • Just get the day Visa Approx $15

    • You can't get that at Shenzhen airport AFAIK, just Lo Wu border crossing and a few other land crossings. It's 160 RMB for AU citizen, valid for 5 days (single entry into Shenzhen SEZ only)

  • what's the normal price?

  • If you are a holder of a Home Return Permit Card (Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macau Residents) which lasts for 10 years for the cost of less than AUD 70 (HKD 560). You can travel to mainland China unlimited times within validity of the card via dedicated immigration electronic express gates without having a China visa and passport.

    • Unlikely many of us will hold that.

  • Saw on tv a flight centre ad for return to HK around $650. What airline is that?

  • i took this route back in feb, except i flew onward towards hangzhou international airport for about $800. ultimately i was trying to get to shanghai, however it wasn't quite worth it due to hangzhou being another 4 hour drive from shanghai. if you're just looking to stay in shenzhen it's a great deal, the city looks fantastic from above, with plenty of lakes and mountains around the city. if you're trying to get to another city it might not be worth the cost or hassle to transfer etc.

  • Dont know if anyone has been to Shenzhen but it wasn't the safest of countries out there..

Watch out for suspicious children, they are "bought" by crime gangs to do their business, and of course tried to steal by backpack. Just sad really….

  • Does Hainan Airlines provide a return guarantee? :)

    • Sure…after they collide with a US spyplane… :)
