a lot to pay for outdated CPU

    • +4

For the price, it seems pretty reasonable. The specs aren't too bad and the form factor is a bonus. While it's 3 generations old, I don't think it matters too much. For general use, the entire package is of decent value.

    • +4

For something targeted at a business/school user which will be primarily office/note taking, the CPU won't matter much in this case. If you were doing graphic design, I may advise against it but that's about all.

For someone needing/wanting an ultra thin hybrid, it seems like a pretty decent offer.

If you look at a more current model, it's nearly $2k! Now THAT'S a lot to pay for a CPU upgrade.

yes maybe, but think about it this way: you are just paying premium for a cool form factor here. as long as you're ok with that, fine. but for this money much better performing things can be bought, and you won't feel like you are lagging behind the progress. if one doesn't care about all that, godspeed. it was a fine machine in the day, though I would never buy HP haha.

        • For me, the portability of a laptop is it's biggest function. If I wanted desktop performance at the expense of portability then I would buy a desktop.

          • @macrocephalic: it's not that linear, my friend. if that's all you care about, chromebooks should be your choice, because they are light, portable and snappy, also come with good screens if you choose wisely, and stellar battery life. if I wanted desktop performance at the expense of portability I would buy a mobile workstation, which I did haha. 1.8 kg vs 2.2 kg is not a big difference! but the CPU and GPU in mobile workstation absolutely murder this. and the price difference? got mine for $1100. so, once again, a lot of money to pay for outdated tech, period.

@[Deactivated]: They're completely different products. Heard of "comparing apples and oranges"? you're doing that now. This is designed for mostly office/email/document use, with some note taking when it is in tablet form.

Try and fold your mobile workstation back on itself, and write on the screen. Report back with results.

In all cases this form factor commands a pretty steep premium. Getting a reasonably well powered hybrid in a quality engineered chassis for $850 is pretty good!

Your chromebook comment just reinforces how much you're completely missing the point.

              • @incipient: I am just reflecting on your comment about buying a desktop as an alternative to this haha so think about how you are missing a point

          Hi kasaresj,

I'm actually looking for a laptop at the moment. What are the alternatives in terms of better performance at this price point that you mentioned? I've been doing a lot of searches and research but couldn't get my head around all the information. Thanks for any help you could provide.

          Cheers.

          • @Chinerama: depends on the form factor. do you want a 13 or 15 inch?

            • +1

@[Deactivated]: I am after a 13 inch one with Touch. Can you please suggest one.

              • @vineet537: If you want a tablet/hybrid with touch (and a stylus) haha id recommend this. If it's just a standard laptop with a touch screen, there are a few options.

I can't find any store listings currently, but something like this will do the job: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Dell-Latitude-7390-i5-8350U-SS…

                • @incipient: The price difference is huge. :(

                  • @vineet537: Sorry there were a few listed on ozb for <$1k. Not sure what you can get them for now.

              • @vineet537: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/462101

is this too much? cheaper would be worse build quality to also have touch.

                • @[Deactivated]: Price for Dell-Latitude-7390-i5-8350U-SS is above $2K and HP SPECTRE 13 X360 is $848.

                  • @vineet537: Lenovo I am recommending is $1200.

                • @[Deactivated]: 128gb with no other storage is quite limiting. Unless you knew you wouldn't really store anything other than a few documents on the laptop, it may be annoying.

To save about $300, and get a 256gb ssd instead, I'd seriously consider the x360 in this deal. The single core performance isn't much better in the lenovo, but the multi core sure is. I'd say the right choice here depends on use case as there are pros and cons on both sides.

          • @Chinerama: If you're after a very standard laptop (no touch/stylus, not super light/heavy) then you have plenty of options. The biggest choice would be if you need to play games. We've had some pretty solid deals come through here for both recently.

For gaming, with a GPU: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/462689 (the HDD in this one is a bit of a let down…but it keeps cost lower).

Very light gaming, no GPU: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/459011

This is pretty much the ballpark for best price/performance ratio. You can spend less, but the performance drops off pretty quickly.

edit: these are just two very 'one size fits all' examples. you can get bigger, smaller, lighter, thinner, etc.

    Not so good

    • Not so good, but you up voted?

        Yes because I never downvote

        • You should try it some time. It's very cathartic.

The Spectre X360s with 6th gen CPUs were released back in 2015!! So are these new? Even if these are new and never used, they must have been sitting at some warehouse gathering dust for years. Lithium ion batteries degrade over time even if they are not used, so I don’t think you’ll get the same level of battery performance out of these.

IMO you are better off buying something like a current generation DELL inspiron 13” 2-in-1 with a quad core i5 CPU for a little more (they usually go on sale for around $1000). With EOFY sales just around the corner, I don't think this is a good buy.

    • +2

You have posted two Spectre X360 deals here & here and you don't think it's a good buy at half price?

Also these are new so you are covered by 12 month warranty if the battery is cactus.

      • -2

I have a Spectre X360 (a 2018 model), and I’ve been following this line over the years, which is why I posted here in the first place. Tech depreciates quite fast, a 4 year old notebook is not worth ½ the original RRP. A family member bought the i7 version of this with a larger SSD for around $1600 in 2015 from JBHifi at one of their regular 15% off laptop deals. So this particular model with an i5 was readily available for around $1200 every other weekend during 2015/2016. Which is why I don't think its worth $850 in 2019.

        • Are you sure you're not just a bit upset you could have bought this for half price ;)

Display models so I will pass.

    • +1

They must have sold quite a few and the remaining units are now display stock as that note wasn't there earlier. I'm guessing they added it recently because last time I checked was around 7pm.

Will mark the deal as expired, thanks!
