      I want to know why this country even has so many homeless in Melbourne. Pretty sure the government gives enough hand outs to them in order to survive

        I'm sure there are exceptions but mostly a life choice. Some rather spend their dole on alcohol than rents, for example.

        Untreated/badly managed mental health issues and lack of availability of beds in domestic violence shelters would probably be two big reasons. Hapless druggies probably after that, but there is a fair bit of overlap between those 3 groups.

        A ton of australians are living paycheck to paycheck, and any instance of of unemployment/low cash on hand coupled with a financial difficulty (unprecedented medical fees, car issues, even an ambulance is $650 when needed) can set them back very hard. Incurring debt to keep you going can make it worse for people who never had the privilege of financial literacy. It is also difficult to get some benefits without a permanent address. The cost of rent is very high compared to living expenses for some people. If I was to pick two between money for food, medicine, and rent, I'd miss rent. We don't have anywhere near enough support services for those who have fallen beneath the cracks. There is also housing discrimination when some prople try to get back on their feet. and a whole other host of reasons
