Its really awesome this Sony player also does ABC iView, SBS TV and Channel 7.

Great price, and at $99 for a Blu Ray player, what is the benefit of purchasing a WD TV?

    • "also does ABC iView, SBS TV and Channel 7" Ok I think you prob mean it plays iView but what does it do to SBS & Ch7??

      • -1

Yes, by "does", it plays ABC iView, SBS TV and Channel 7.

        • DOnt you get these with a normal antenna? Or are you referring to some iView type IP system?

        • +2

he means they can do the online versions of these channels.

        • +1

He means their online on-demand counterparts.

    • -7

      Crownanchor = Troll/bait

I could name 100 reasons. But it's obvious. If you don't get it already, then it's a waste of time trying.

  • +2

wow pretty cheap, just a head up for you guys. Before you make the payment, try to change the currency to USD, this would bring the price down to 90.88USD so around 85 AUD (exclude shipping) :)

    • it's already in Australian $

    • +2

Tried it but changes back to AUD when you enter an Australian address.

Don't forget to add shipping to title - $15

      • +1

oh my bad, thought was worth a try lol

  • Nice deal, purchased!

  • +1

finally bd players reaching dvd level

  • Don't think this blu ray player can be region freed, should be dvd region free out of the box but locked down for blu ray.

Comparison between the DBP-S370 and the new replacement model BDP-S380

    BDP-S370

    • has DLNA media sharing.
    • has no 3D support.
    • USB only supports Fat 32.
    • has SACD playback.
    • has coaxial and optical digital out
    • DLNA does support MKV by renaming files to AVI

    BDP-S380

    • has no DLNA media sharing.
    • has no 3D support.
    • have updated USB to read NTFS.
    • have removed optical SPDIF.
    • has only coaxial digital out.
    • have removed SACD playback.
    • has faster loading times.
    • has new smaller size remote.
    • added more internet features.
    • DLNA does support MKV by renaming files to AVI

I did not know that - however just trying exactly that with my BDP-S370 didn't work, could be the codec used in the MKV though.

    • NTFS support for USB - Does it mean that it can play movies from a 2.5" external drive?

    • so the old model is better?

    • I think BDP-S380 still has SACD playback as I just did a quick check at Sony website.

  • If this thing can't play MKV then i have to pass. Have a whole collection of movies in MKV.

    • plays mkv but not through DLNA, you have to plug in your USB HD or flash drive

      • Thanks Spawn, i need the one that can play MKV through DLNA to put in the bed room. Already have a Samsung bluray player sitting in the lounge room. It plays MKV through DLNA flawlessly.

  • +2

Got this player a while back, the no NTFS sucks. It plays mkv's though… but what's the point when there's no ntfs support :P:P

    • it is a bluray player first and foremost and media player after that.
The bluray playing quality is superb and supports bdlive as well.
Also note that you if you have a newish sony tv which has remote control options for playback then you can control the player from that as well.

Few features are not advertised but having two remotes that I can use interchangeably is a wish come true.

Always, I wanna be with you
      And make believe with you
      And live in harmony,
      harmony oh love

      • It's a good player, don't get me wrong. But support for MKV but not NTFS is irritating :) I have a sony tv and can use both remotes, easier to just use the blu ray one though haha

For those in Perth, Sanity at Garden City Booragoon have the BDP-S370 available in-store.. when I got mine (afternoon of Sunday, June 5th) they still had about 10 units in stock. Here is a copy of my receipt:- i.imgur.com(slash)xevVO.jpg

    • Image no longer exists.

For those in Sydney, Blacktown has stock

      • For those in Sydney, Marrickville (Inner West) also has stock.

  • Sweet, just ordered one online, seems to have all the features except 3D.

  • +2

    it does not support NTFS.
does it mean that files bigger than 4GB cannot be played back on this player ?

    • +1

Yes, this is what it means. You can watch MKV's but good luck with anything over 4gb :(

    • Exactly. Which is one of the many reasons suggesting this replaces a WDTV is a FAIL. TB's of on-demand 720p/1080p, with flawless menus & features is possible with WDTV. Finally a product that surpasses everything it sets-out to do. This, on the other hand, is an excellent-reviewed, excellent-priced BluRay player. Anything else is not worth writing on the box. You'll be limited to 720p TV episodes only, connected via the front USB slot, and it "should" work most of the time, via the mess of menu/folder support. I have zero need to guinea-pig any bluray player, or pay the rubbish prices for their discs. And the bluray aspect isn't "free" by replacing a WDTV for the same price. Digital files OWN all other methods, including half-baked & expensive CDs/DVDs/BDs. Geeks > Nerds.

  • Hangon….So the new model retails for 199 and has wifi builtin and does more. If you want wifi for this then you need to pay 99$. Wouldn't it just be better sense to buy the newer model?

    • +2

Both models are the same when it comes to Wifi - they are both Wifi ready i.e. you need to buy the Sony USB Wifi adapter

    • +1

      the new one doesn't have built-in wi-fi…

      • Thanks for the info. I mis-read Just ordered one online.

    • don't pay $99 bucks. If you're router supports bridge mode, get another cheapo wifi router that does and dd-wrt it. OR get those xbox lan adaptors from mymemory.co.uk (if you can find it in stock)

  • +1

can anyone confirm if this plays region free dvd?

    • +4

Yes i have one and it does

      • thanks a lot, i'll pick one up tomorrow!

  • +2

I own this player; it's great value and will play around 90% of what I throw at it. It's only trouble is 720p MKVs, which will usually play, but occasionally they wont or will play without a fast forward function. Also, if you have Sony LCD, make sure you apply the firmware update as there is a conflict between this unit and Sony TV's that causes the audio to cut out intermittently. I'm considering getting this a backup; SONY ftw!

  • Instore too?

  • wasn't the old deal better where you would get the player and then 5 blu rays for $200
if you got this and bought 5 blu rays, it might be over $200 i guess depending on what blu rays you get?

    • +3

a fair number of the blurays that were bundled with this player are now available in the clearance / discount bins around the $15 mark…. so 6x$15 + $99 is cheaper than original deal.

  • Huzzah!!!
Picked the last one at Docklands :)

  • None at Chirnside Park, and got the last one at Lilydale Vic.

  • +1

just called the docklands store, (03 9602 4081) they said if you call and come into store, they will get one in for you, when you leave a $20 deposit, they will have some by the end of the week, otherwise by the 18th. but you had to put down the deposit to secure it. get in quick if you want it!

  • does this do region free blurays? I mean, can it play all regions. via a hack or native…

    • not that i have been able to find … it apparently comes DVD region free though (but i have not tested this myself)

      • +1

region free tested with my amazon discs
Have a few r2 disks along with a couple of uni bought r5 and r6 ones

Region free bluray players are few and pretty expensive as well. Anyways cheaper to buy the bluray player from the states and then use it here.

A hardware mod for the BD player can cost upto $200 which pretty much defeats the point of the sale

  • good deal

  • Playable Disc Types: CD-R, Blu-ray Disc, BD-RE, BD-R, BD-ROM, CD-DA, CD, DVD-Video, DVD-RW, DVD-R (Incl. Dual Layer), DVD+R (Incl. Double Layer), DVD+RW, CD-RW, BDAV, BD/CD, BD/DVD

Playable File Types: AVCHD, MPEG 1, MPEG 2, MPEG 4, WMV9, AAC, WAV, MP3, WMA9, GIF, JPEG, PNG

No DivX/Xvid, no MKV, no FLAC (nor anything lossless), and according to Trusted Reviews it refuses to play Hi-Def AVI and WMV: http://www.trustedreviews.com/Sony-BDP-S380_Blu-ray-Player_r…

Typical Sony. Only in-house/proprietary standards. No open source support. Every consumer is a pirate/hacker/criminal.

At it least it supports NTFS drives; for those who like to watch movies on a 1080 HDTV without colourful Lego bricks spawning out of people's faces.
    That's just revolutionary Sony!

    • Thats the S380

      Title says S370
plays all the formats you listed but no NTFS. Mate you got all mixed up.
WMV is the most unfriendly format anyways and at least I have never seen anyone use it since like 2005 or something.

  • Mine arrived yesterday, it looks swish, just watched Iron Mand 2 in full 1080, neat function that when you insert a disc it switches my TV to the HDMI port (I have a bravia)

    Great deal thanks for posting

    • Yeah that's nothing new.

Samsung Anynet will do that too and so will most combinations of DVD/BD players & higher-end HDTVs.

      • The technical term for that is CEC (Consumer Electronics Control). Various brands have their own version of it. My panasonic plasma remote will do almost everything on my Samsung Bluray. When I upgraded the TV firmware it added some extra Bluray player functions.
