    Goodyear brown already gone.. :(

  • +1

These ones seem like a good deal as well, $14 after credit: https://www.rivers.com.au/shop/men/shoes/boots/pu-boot-lace-…

Judging from the feedback on the website, avoid their synthetic leatherish shoes, but the leather shoes are good quality.

    • +4

The shoes you linked are synthetic…

      • Hmmm so they are, must have got my filters wrong. They have surprisingly good reviews though.

      • We are not big on details around here…

  • Is UK or US size?

    • I bought the chelsea boots in an 11. I take a us11 and uk10.

    • From memory when I got the chelsea boot last time it was too big, so went a size down from normal.

    • +1

I'm usually a solid US 11. However in receiving the goodyear welt boot last night I would recommend sizing down as they are way too big.

  • Thank you OP. Was contemplating spending over $120 for a pair chelsea boots in the last few weeks so happy to try these given the price.

Maybe I've missed something but is free shipping now for orders over $80?

    • Sorry, yes $80+ order for free delivery

      • +2

        There's a yellow banner stating

FREE SHIPPING ON ORDERS OVER $40 - THIS WEEKEND

        • Yeah OP I can confirm that free shipping on all orders over $40 (before discount!) applies right now. Suggest you update the post.

          • +1

@aussietivoman: Yes we are running free shipping on orders over $40 until midnight Sydney time on Sunday

Rivers make cheap stuff that is bad for the environment

    • +2

And the employees who manufacturer the products get paid bugger all.

    • +12

And Nike makes expensive stuff that is good for the environment.

      • +4

        Yeah so does Gucci.

Have to wonder what some of these people wear - bamboo and hessian?

        • +4

Supposedly bamboo harvesting threatens some panda populations.

        • +1

If you buy less fast fashion, buy things that cost more but can be repaired, and buy them far less often, your impact is significantly smaller than if you buy Rivers or Nike.

I.e. a pair of Rossi boots with a replaceable sole and some leather treating skills will see you not have to buy boots for 10+ years vs buying a new pair of Rivers boots every year.

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: And to get the sole replaced at your local bootmakers will cost 3 times more than a pair of Rivers boots.

            • @aussietivoman: Because outright cost is always more important than the environment when considering fashion purchasing decisions…

            • +2

@aussietivoman: That's not true, new sole costs me about $40 at my local guy for oxfords.

          • +3

@[Deactivated]: You obviously don't know what you're talking about. These boots have a goodyear welted sole - which is perfectly replaceable.

I've only ever owned one pair of rossi boots, they were motorcycle boots, and they fell apart because they were made from cheaply from cheap materials - and couldn't be repaired economically. They had a moulded sole which quite literally split apart and crumbled.

            • +2

@macrocephalic: Moulded soles are garbage, period, so your bad on buying those.

I do know what I'm talking about, actually. I was speaking more generally about fashion rather than these particular Rivers boots, which may well last a long time. Though I doubt the quality of craftsmanship or inputs are as high as a more expensive shoe. A Goodyear welt doesn't mean a good boot necessarily.

I also consider the ethicality of the purchase too - if Rivers are happy to sell for $50, how much can the workers possibly be getting paid? Not enough is my guess. And under what conditions?

              • +1

@[Deactivated]: so you'll pay more on the off chance that the workers get paid more?

                • +3

@follow: Off chance? If it's made in Aus it's not an off chance at all. And yes I'll pay more to ensure workers rights.

              • -1

@[Deactivated]: They are. However I didn't buy them, they were a gift from my father who had thought that Rossi boots were all good quality (because he's old and remembers when they were).

Rivers do sell their fair share of junk products, although I'm not sure that it's more than most other clothing retailers. My point was that these particular boots, from experience, are good quality. They are not fast fashion, they're not really even fashion, they're a sturdy work boot.

              • +1
                • +2

@Wystri Warrick: My point exactly. That's why I will only purchase from companies manufacturing in countries with proven workers' rights systems, or from companies with extremely transparent practices.

    • +1

      Yes, they're called clothes.

These leather boots are every bit as good quality as boots costing four times as much, and they're made from the same things (leather and rubber mostly).

  • Thanks for this OP. Been eyeing off the Chelsea Boots for a while. Will get a tan and black pair at this price (for click and collect)!

  • Damn, just bought two pairs from the $50 deal a few days ago!

Good quality boots, sizing isn't great, 9 was too small and 10 too big for me, but got both pairs in 10 anyway. Good for wearing anywhere you're likely to damage a nicer pair of boots.

  • +1

Perfect to mow the grass in, thank you OP

    • +1

Me too I hate getting wet socks.

  • Oh Gawd !! Why doesn't no one make 12.5 ?

    • Double negative, so you are saying some do!

      • -3

        tryagain

  • Thanks OP, got another pair of Goodyear Welts in size 12 - paid $59 for my brown ones and am very happy with them.

Now have a black pair on the way at $39.60 less $10!

  • Black Chelsea shows as $36 and the other colours are $48?

    • I've ordered the black ones and will try to exchange them for brown or tan ones when I turn up. That's what I did when I ordered my Goodyear boots a couple of months ago. Will see how I go

      • +1

Worked. Bought the black ones and swapped them for the tan ones at the counter, didn't have to pay any more :)

  • I think op means other colors are $38, not $36.

  • If you are looking for a small spend to bump up over $40, I really find these heat max socks to be great

    https://www.rivers.com.au/shop/men/clothing/socks/men%27s-he…

$9 per pair, very nice in winter.

  • Reviews for the Chelsea are pretty terrible

    • They mostly complain about them being too narrow. I'm wondering how wide these people's feet are. I have a slightly wide foot with a low arch and high instep (basically a thick foot) and I can wear these just fine. It should be obvious from the pictures that these are not a shoe designed for people with very wide feet.

      • Interestingly I bought some Hush Puppies chelsea boots in a very popular deal a while ago. I bought my normal size 10 but they are absolutely huge and even with inner soles are just too wide.

        • I got them too - I'm pretty sure they were the wide version so I wear thicker socks.

    • Are we looking at the same thing ?

      5 star = 31
      4 star = 7
      3 star = 1
      2 star = 1
      1 star = 1

      • Yeah it seems we are - I only noticed the reviews while looking at the light tan which got a whopping 2 x 2 star.

Corresponds to the post below \/

  • Went to their store to check out the shoes..you get what you pay for honestly. Feels and looks cheap and they don't feel particularly comfortable..but the price is good so there's that.

    • +2

On the goodyear welt boots? I'm yet to find anything which is even close to the quality for anywhere approaching the price. The goodyear welt boots are made from good top grain leather which lasts a long time (although requires effort if you want to shine). I still have the original pair that I bought 4 years ago, they look beaten from being worn outside all the time, but they haven't deteriorated at all.

      • Same story here, about 4 years on my first pair of goodyear welts and there isnt even a seam or bit of glue out place anywhere.
They have weathered nicely, but if you want them to look a bit more like they did when new, you can just put a bit of dubbin polish on and they shine up real nice!

      • I agree with macrocephalic - show me a better pair of boots for the price than the Goodyear Welts.

      • Hence the qualifier, "but the price is good so there's that". I haven't bought any so can't comment on durability, just on the aesthetics and the initial feel putting them in store. Certainly not trying to dissuade people from getting them if they see value in them, just not for me.

        • A few years ago I realised that, as long as the outer of the shoe fits your foot, then most of the comfort comes from the insole (obvious exceptions excepted). I buy replacement insoles for all my shoes now, and switch them from one set of shoes to the next as required. All my shoes are comfortable for their uses now.

I find that the Masseuse brand insoles from kmart ($16) are pretty good, better than the pricier ones from the chemist, but YMMV.

  • It says on the website that takes 3 to 10 days to collect from store…forces me to buy in store.

    • Yes. Except that I got my collect notification 4 hours after ordering. YMMV.

      • Bought on Friday and I'm still waiting for my collect notification.

        • +1

That's what happens when they see you poking your tongue out. Now, if you just used a nice image of a fountain pen, you'd be wearing your new boots now. And get a hair cut. Young people these days!

  • Are Goodyear model ok to wear in an office or are they more casual?

    • +1

Surely that depends on the office you work in and how valuable you are to the company?

    • +2

The look like work boots because they are work boots. If you can wear work boots to your office then, yes. They are not formal or fashionable boots.

    • +2

Bought a pair for the office and had to return. They're high quality, but definitely more for manual labour than sitting at a desk. Quite large rounded toes that wouldn't fit in with the Chiseled RM Williams crew.

      • Thanks for the comment. I've been considering a pair of RM's, but hate the idea of buying them and never wearing them (never having worn that style at all).

I thought these would be a good way to try before I buy - to see if I like and actually wear them.

Any other suggestions for a more basic boot?

        • I never thought I'd wear my RMs either but they are so comfortable and can be worn with anything that I wear the almost every day .

  • I'm partial to a pair of Chelsea boots, so bought a pair.

  • +2

The good thing is you can wear the welted boots anywhere and not feel like an overdressed (profanity) (real estate agent) or and underdressed bogan (tradie) - they straddle the line nicely i reckon.

  • I bought a pair of welteted leather boots in tan last week. Will take some wearing in but are good for a wide foot. Will have to make a Price Protection claim. Thanks.

    • Yeah, I bought two of pairs of the chelsea boots a couple of weeks ago and paid $60 for them - I feel ripped off. I had planned to choose my favourite and return the other, but when I fronted up at the the local Rivers store it had closed down. I guess I could make the effort to drive to another store, but I'll probably just keep them as a spare.

      • They're a good boot and I would hand over heart pay $60 for them if I needed them then and there.

        • Definitely, I'm just disappointed to pay $60 and then see them for $40 a week or two later.

  • Cheers. Got a black in store today. A brown/tan pair is being held for me at another store.

  • Anyone got a new $10 code? signed up with a dud email but haven't got the code.

    • and WELCOMEDA isn't working?

      • Nah looks like it's expired

        • code can take up to 72 hours to arrive.

can you post the new code here when received? thanks

          • @altomic: Will do, still waiting for it!

  • Never received sign up voucher. Anyone receive one?

  • The welted boots are no longer listed on their website. Hope they aren't discontinued.
