    I take my kids travelling with us once a year. Typically during the school term. Not only is it cheaper and it allows us to afford them to come with us, they can gain more life experience in that week than they will learn in school.
    
    I highly recommend it, more so when the kids are still in primary school.

I'd have to say JAL is better, 2-4-2 on dreamliner compared to 3-3-3 on ANA. Main benefit for Sydney flights is that ANA is to Haneda which is in Tokyo, compared with Narita which is in Chiba Prefecture (although there are some good cheap hotels near Narita, and plenty of shops too)

  In Economy, you can't beat JAL. Their seats have to rate up there as among the best.
  
  Premium Economy however, ANA beats them hands down.
  
  Never flown ANA business but hear it's amazing. JAL's beats out Qantas except on the A333 where I think Qantas have the upper hand there.

    Agreed. I take the Access Narita bus for Y1000. Drops you off either at Tokyo Station or Ginza. They say it takes 65-75 mins but I've been on some that took less than an hour. Very relaxing ride. The only downside is that I get way too relaxed and I often fall asleep. Good thing I'm usually with someone so they usually wake me up when we're at our destination.

  IMO not the best time to visit. I went in August last year, and it was infernal, like constant oppressive heat, even at night (and I don't get bothered in tropical countries at all).

        @OfTheOverflow: Summer at Hokkaido should be much cooler in August than the main island in Japan. And despite being popular for a winter holiday, the summer scenery there is pretty good too.

  Warm and mild weather t shirt and jeans and some days shorts. Very little autumn fall colours in the tress will need to go in November for that.
  
  Japan grand Prix in suzuka mid October
  
  Cooler tempts further north and still humid down south.
  
  Not much else going on at that time so tourist levels are lower compared to when there are festivals.

  I've been to Japan in june, july and august. Is it hot? Yes. But if you're used to Australian summer it really isn't that bad. I'm in Melbourne but I've lived in Darwin and been to qld in the summer. People like to think Japanese summers are something else but it just felt like any other hot asian country. Okinawa on the other hand is something else…hottest I've been in my life. In short, definitely go!

  Now that Australia isn't as cheap as it used to be, it's not so expensive. Accommodation generally pricier than here (though you can find affordable small hotels like APA), restaurants generally a little cheaper (except the high end ones for Kobe beef and the like), transport a little dearer (taxis horrendous), alcohol very cheap, general tourist stuff not expensive.
  
  If you can afford a European or American holiday (or indeed an Australian one), you can afford Japan.

  Depends if you're a fancy traveller or not. If staying in one city, you can probably live on $60-70 a day for your accommodation, meals and transportation. For example, if staying in Tokyo:
  
  Y3000 at a capsule hotel
  Y500 for an all day train ticket (I sometimes get a 3 day ticket for Y1500)
  Y1000-1500 for meals (sometimes hotels have some food for breakfast so you might not even need to eat out 3 times a day)
  
  You can get even cheaper if you really want to. Just eat onigiri from convenience stores which can be around Y100-150. Two of those is enough for one meal for me.
  
  Of course spend more if you want to stay at a nicer place or eat at fancy restaurants. If you're travelling with someone, stay at a business hotel which can be similarly priced to a capsule hotel stay x2.

    Pretty much this. You can eat like a king on 2000 yen a day by sticking to 7/11, Family Mart, Lawsons, etc.
    
    Heaps of free things to do and hostels in Japan are usually of a high standard.

      Japanese supermarkets (ie MaxValu, Dalei) are also very good for food. They usually have a wider selection of eats then convenient stores and are cheaper.
      
      They have hundreds of items from sandwiches, bentos, sushi/sushimi, hot food at lower prices too. You can get really good bentos from supermarkets Y300, that include rice, pasta, meatballs, fish and other things of that nature. The food from convenient stores and supermarkets are usually much tastier then what you'd get in Australia.
      
      Drinks are also cheaper with soft drinks (500ml Coke, etc) and other nice things usually under Y100 at supermarkets (nice and cold/hot too)
      
      The only downside with the supermarkets is that they aren't everywhere and they have more limited hours (ie 10am-10pm).

        @Pcoder: I wouldn't recommend the food at the convenience stores personally. You can get by, but you can equally find self service ticket restaurants that'll give you a sot down meal for ¥500 or so. And good tonkotsu ramen can easily be had for 800.

How would January be to visit Tokyo?

Google says it is cold, 4-14 or so each day, but only 3 rain days and it seems like a reasonably large amount of sunshine - does this gel with anyone's experience?

Direct flights from Perth at this price (yes, I've checked that there are similar prices in January) make it a really compelling holiday option if the weather is ok.

  After the first week of the new year, tourism settles down a lot, which is very nice.

      Mine was just over an hour going to Japan so that's okay but 6 hours going back and they wouldn't let us get out of the airport. This was in 2017 so hopefully it's different now. Try to go to Resorts World which is near the airport and maybe eat a nice meal over there and have a bit of a walk. Even going to Terminal 3 would be much better since they have a bigger selection of shops and restaurants.
