HP DV6-6026TX notebook - Core i7-2630QM, Radeon 6770M, 8GB RAM, Blu-Ray RW - $1272 @ JB

310

Not sure if this deal is part of JB's current 15% off computers etc. but this seems to be significantly more than 15% off compared to prices elsewhere and thought it worthy of its own post. It says here the offer ends Monday 13th.

OfficeWorks: $1768
Bing Lee: $1798
Cheapest StaticIce (Penta): $1593

This model is basically the same as the similarly good 6023TX for $899 deal at DSE, but with faster CPU, twice the RAM, Blu-Ray rewriter and slightly larger HD. The standout feature of both these HPs is the 6770M GPU paired with GDDR5, which outclasses the 6630M, 525M, 550M, etc. we're seeing in similarly priced laptops from other manufacturers (not that I'm a big fan of HP).

Closest thing I could find to a review of a dv6 with the same CPU and GPU was this one. It does warn not to expect this laptop to be quiet under load, given the relatively power-hungry CPU and GPU.

For anyone wondering how this compares to the current Dell offers (15R with i7-2630QM $799, or $899 with 8GB RAM), it basically has a significantly faster GPU and a Blu-Ray rewriter. So it's quite a bit more to pay for just those two features, but unfortunately I don't think there are any other offers with all of this in one laptop for a lower price.

    • It also adds a Full HD screen and quad speakers…
But it seems JB might not be telling the truth about the screen on the website???

HP have had problems with overheating on similar models lately.

    • Ive owned 4x HP laptops and never had any issues with them. Yes they do get hot but most laptops do with High preformance VGA cards. Dell, HP, Toshiba etc etc all have there issues its just the luck of the draw really. :D. Till this day my mother in law is running a Del Inspiron 6400 which i handed down. Still running after nearly 7 years, still going strong..:D

I think HP has performed below average with the DV7 as far as reliability is concerned.

The higher res screen, the harder you are pushing the graphics card.

I had an Asus G73-SW which was very nice to use, and didn't overheat, but the battery life was woeful and no 9-cell batteries available.

Still using my 5 year old Inspiron 1720 upgraded with SSD…

This this is a good deal for this price.

However must say that HP do have much overheating issues.

I myself am using a 16" full hd hp laptop running a 9600gt. It overheat so bad that it melted one of the wire connecting the display(Unlucky of me that it happened 1 week after the 2 years warranty period). Hp quoted me for replacement for the whole screen which was roughly $400 with work hours. I fixed it myself with a piece of cardboard stabling the wire =P.

Also I can't run the laptop for more then an hour on flat surface without it switching off(not even on wooded table) if I actually run something "heavy". E.g Aion. I need to have the left side of the laptop levitated ( I currently have 3/4 of my laptop sitting on the edge of the table while the other 1/4 dangling midair).

I recommend a extension of warranty to 3 or 4 years if it is available and doesn't cost too much.

Exactly, I have the same issue..

After about 2.5 years my display started to play hide and seek. Realised after reading few threads that it is a known issue that the lead/cable connecting the dispaly gets disconnected due to overheating.

My laptop became a Desktop from that day (with an external LCD monitor)

It sits on a Logitech cooling pad and without it it shuts down within 30 minutes in summer months. LOL

  • Get officeworks beat this by 5%, you will get incredibly good deal hehe

    • Would be nice but since it's a "special order" from Officeworks, they won't beat it by 5%.

Damn, that's really nice. Beats the XPS 15 in stats, wonder how good the screen/speakers are though. And an awesome price.

Oh also note, 1080p screen. Slick.

Where is the 1080p screen you speak of?

HP only seem to know a 1366 x 768 screen.

      • Not sure about this set. However I currently own and am using a 1080p 16" Hp laptop. So that statement isn't true.

      • Sadly it's not just HP that can't break the 1366x768 barrier.

    • +2

its not full HD, full HD is only customizable through HP USA

      a little bit of comparison
      Starcraft 2 - Ultra on 1920x1080 - 6023tx - 40fps
      6026tx - ~48fps

Wtf are you doing to do with a bluray player on a laptop?

    • +12

      watch blu-ray movies

    • Storage? Movies? Hdmi to a TV if you need to? Then again, I think it does not really justify bluray movie unless it's full hd.

  • Is a blu-ray rw a blu ray burner?

Anyone know if this can easily be turned into a hackintosh?

if you don't need the blu-ray drive or extra ram.

Why would you link to a different store when the currently talked about store has the laptop you linked to for cheaper? ( $1098.20)

And it a faily silly comment anyway. May as well say there is a netbook for 299 if you don't need the power, ram, HDD space optical drive etc etc and link to that. Let's stick to the deal at hand.

    • anyone know if the ODD could be swapped for a SSD later since HP are not known for their upgradability
And if ODD could be plugged into a desktop?
Also battery stats for the i7 please?

    ?

    • for gaming it isn't really fair to compare, the HP is significantly ahead

  • wow AMAZING specs for the price.
But I am not upgrading my notebook yet, need to get another good year of it at least.
