The offer without the headphones is $7/week. So no, these are not free.
Any time something is free, always assume imaginary quotation marks around the word. You're paying for it one way or another.
At $7 a week, you're effectively buying the headphones for $104 which is not a bad deal assuming you read the Australian. I can't really comment on that publication. My only exposure to them is their site which doesn't let you read any articles without a subscription, so I blacklist them from any google searches and my feed.
I'd rather spend $400 on making sure Murdoch dies off real soon.
