Haters gonna hate, potatoes gonna potate.

sorry i mean this model of tv.thank you

  • Is it true that Plasmas consume more electricity than LED/LCDs? Is it significantly more?

    • +2

Yes and No. If you watch your $1200 plasma 4 hours a day you will use about $20 more electricity a year than the $2000 46" LED your friend was conned into buying.

  • -1

    yes

  • I dont get it - are you posting a deal or looking for a better one?

    • posting a deal + if your guys got a better deal to tell me,cause i will go and buy tomorrow/hopefully this is the best deal i can get in the market now..thank you.

That's not a bad deal for an advertised price (RRP $1599 on Samsung's website - would be interested if you can haggle down a bit more. Although considering it's HN, they'll say it's below cost (it's not below cost, it just looks below cost to the franchisee because HN head office has taken too big a cut from the sale). Try going around to other retailers too - Gerry's been kind enough to pop it up on his website so all the hard work about proving you got a deal, etc. has been done for you.

From quick looks at this (I haven't sepnt much time looking at this particular model), it looks good value. Probably doesn't have the Smart TV stuff (don't know, cbf to check) but meh, it's not worth it anyway. TBH can't see that crap taking off - too many people are downloading that sort of stuff and geting media players hooked up to their TVs to play their downloaded content. The only real change for the 2011 TVs is in the design, with Samsung going for thinner bezels (for plasmas, it means they've added an extra 1"; for LEDs it means they look really sexy now… thin bezel >>>>>>>> slim TV).

One thing I always said to prospective customers when I used to work in home entertainment retail about Samsung plasmas is that the Panasonics are generally better in the important areas - picture quality and reliability - and should at least pop up as a thought before you hand over the hard earned. Unfortunately they're generally more pricey, their design isn't as aesthetically pleasing (they tend to be a bit more conservative and about 2 generations behind Samsung in styling) and they don't seem to go on sale as often. That's my 2c.

    • I agree with you but add that;

The cheapest 3D Panasonic panel is what, $1650 at the cheapest?
And for picture quality, it pains me to say it by the PS51D8000 plasma in my opinion has better PQ than the equivalently priced Panasonic THP50GT30! (Not to mention the Samsung has better IPTV options, is slimmer, and comes with 3D glasses in the box (extra glasses are cheaper!)

"Although considering it's HN, they'll say it's below cost (it's not below cost, it just looks below cost to the franchisee because HN head office has taken too big a cut from the sale)"

So you're not happy until you have gotten your TV at below the floor cost? (Which this TV is under, btw) $1188 for a 50" 3D plasma which retails at $1599 is not a bad price at all.

  • $1186.70 at JB Hi-Fi. Seems to be a normal price now, looking at staticice and shopbot.

    • this is probably the price after there 15% off sale……a strange price to have as a regular ticket

  • The Panasonic S series is in run out now i brought a 50inch Full HD plasma not 3d though for $850 and i let myself get suckered into an extra $100 for 5 years warranty, you should be able to get that smae price or better easily but if not i can post the receipt if you want.

Samsung prob has a few better features than the better brands but i have found samsung quality is hit and miss, sometimes good sometimes crap but almost always looks great but not built well

    • "i let myself get suckered into an extra $100 for 5 years warranty"

Yeah man, you got BURNT! /Sarcasm

    • If you feel you got suckered by the 5 year warranty, check the terms. Sometimes the extended warranties have a fourteen day cool off period in which you can return for a refund.

  • It's pretty cheap, tbh. And if HV and JB are selling it at that price, you know something weird's going on.

I wonder whether 3D TVs are actually selling well or not. I find the 3D movement completely pointless, tbh, so it wouldn't surprise me to see people ignore the more expensive 3D TVs.

    • if they do thats a shame because 3d is a nothing feature , what they are missing is a better picture quality and other features

    51", hmm that's an odd size…
Well at least you can tell your neighbor with the 50" that you've got a bigger TV than his.

  • The 2011 samsung range of 3d tvs also use blutooth for there glasses the old models use infared would be a little smoother especially if you look away from the tv then back

  • Have a look at 2ndsworld.com.au. I bought the samsung 3D plasma 50" (series 7) for $1095 plus $65 delivery on Saturday 11/6. It is a factory second with 12 months warranty. This means it could be an ex display, have a cosmetic blemish???, a tiny ding or factory reworked. You can return if you do not like fault.

    • I wonder if they do extended warranty. I would think 3 years is a good warranty to have on electronic goods

  • One thing to mention is that 3D tv's are usually of very good quality. The makers have to go to extra lengths to get the best from the screens so that the 3D will work well. So even if you don't use the 3D, the quality should be supreme :)

  • The terms and conditions seem to imply that this MASSIVE DEAL is only available for customers taking up flexirent over 36 months.

So the actual cost for this TV is $2198 over 3 years.

Anyone else read it that way?

    • I can confirm this is not true. You can take this TV out on 20 months interest free with deferred payments. IE Take the TV now and pay it off… February 2013.

Bloody Harvey Norman, always ripping people off and making it hard to have a big TV!!!

      • Sweet, thanks for that :)

  • Aren't any 3D glasses included???

    "What's in the Box

Remote Controller Model TM950, Batteries included, Vesa Wall Mount Support and Power Cable."

    • i'm just replying to myself. I asked the staff and 1 pair of glasses is included :)

  • I have this unit. bought it about a month ago. I cannot fault it. It's a great price - JB/Dick were selling them for $1496 at the time I bought mine.

Mine came with glasses in the packaging - 3100GB.

Any other questions, I'll be happy to try and anaswer

  • i just got email replied from Harvey Norman ALEXANDRIA store..3D glass is not included..no good!!

    • i got mine from HN Caringbah last Saturday, with 1x bluetooth glasses included. The tv failed last night(blank screen, only audio) and today i took it back and i got a replacement. The guy at the warehouse told me to keep my 3d glasses cause the replacement has no glasses included. He said they have stock with glasses and stock with no glasses.
