    Cheers
Ended up buying an 8tb for $300 then used my 10% off giftcards to get it for $270

  • How does this compare to the Seagate IronWolf for $143.10?

    • Generally the consensus seems to be these run quieter, use less power and are more reliable

    • My experience is WD Reds are terrible, have had 4/8 fail in the past 3 years… I’ve gone back to Seagate Ironwolfs and no failures yet

      • I have had one of the WD Red 4TB DOA and 1 WD Red 3TB Unraid reported to have some issues but apart from that the other 6 x WD Reds seem okay so far. I am thinking of the ironwolfs as well but many forums seem to suggest that the Seagates have lesser reliability…

My experience is the opposite. All the Seagate drives I've had over the years died well within the warranty period.

I've had Red drives of varying capacities since 2013, they're all still running 24/7 in my server + being air cooled.

I'm in same boat… I have a 32Tb server at home and the only drives that have failed over the years have been Seagate.
Horses for courses… some preferred Holden, some preferred Ford.

          I'm a WD Holden kinda man :).

          • @UFO: It seems like for ever bad WD story there's another one for Seagate (and vice versa). As the Americans say YMMV.

@ramboando: Yeah best bet is probably to have a mix of different brands to avoid the same systemic failures, better redundancy etc. Just like investing, diversification is best.

These are efrx models, so would have been built >3 years ago, so WD warranty no longer applies. Your only claim is against the retailer. I found this out the hard way with two that I bought in December '18, both of which have already died. Return shipping isn't cheap.

Larger format drives with EFAX series are newer and less likely to be a problem.

"The term of your warranty period shall commence on the purchase date appearing on your purchase receipt from an authorized distributor or authorized reseller."
      https://support.wdc.com/warranty/warrantypolicy.aspx?lang=en
And not sure what you mean by EFAX models Scorptec etc still selling EFRX only that I can see

      • Operative words being "authorised"….

      This is incorrect information.
Your WD warranty starts upon purchase, not upon build date.

And the retailer would be your first port of call.

      • I prefer to have the option of claiming from either the retailer or the manufacturer.
Yes, under the ACL, you can return to the retailer and sometimes this will be the easiest and fastest course of action. However, if claiming under warranty direct from WD, they will pay for postage whereas returning to a local retailer costs $$$ if you have to post. Also, a warranty from the manufacturer is handy in case the retailer closes down or disappears, which can be a bigger risk if purchasing from a smaller retailer.

    • You might be wrong about the warranty as others have already mentioned. But you are right about the model. The ’EFAX’ ones are more recent, faster, more cache, and I believe even use less power, compared to the EFRX models.
So far I’ve only seen EFAX models in 2tb or 6tb+ sizes.

I recently bought a 6tb EFAX, benchmarks here:
