From one of the participating gyms - Global Climbing Day - Facebook Event:

Join us for Global Climbing Day on August 24th! We’ve teamed up with The North Face and climbing gyms across the globe to celebrate inclusivity and community through climbing.

We're offering free climbing for all first time visitors of Urban Climb between 2pm & 5pm on Saturday August 24.

There will also be $500 worth of prizes from The North Face to giveaway, and Walls Are Meant for Climbing t-shirts up for grabs with funds going to our partner organisations.

For every climber that takes part in a Global Climbing Day event at a participating gym in Australia and New Zealand, The North Face will donate $1 to a fund that will go towards Cliff
Care, Crag Care and New Zealand Alpine Club, so they can continue to work on key projects across Australia and New Zealand.

[HOW TO ATTEND]
- Arrive at any Urban Climb in Brisbane between 2pm and 5pm on 24/08
- Tell staff at the front counter you're there for Global Climbing Day
- Speed things up by completing your waiver online before attending https://portal.urbanclimb.com.au/uc-e-waiver/default.aspx

        Nah it precedes those films, the latest resurgence in interest around rock climbing started around the beginning of the decade and has been steadily building. The amount of climbing and bouldering gyms has exploded in the last 5 years. I don’t think any one doco did it but Valley Uprising is a great one that come out in 2014 that follows the beginnings of modern rock climbing in Yellowstone National Park and the rebellious culture around it.

        Dawn Wall is currently on Netflix too.

        Both films from a 'story' perspective are decent.

        The grading of the climbs in Dawn Wall are ridiculous, but the guys climb with protection - and take as many attempts as necessary to complete the pitches.

        Alex Honnold in Free Solo though - that is a whole new level of mental with death the consequence. I can't imagine watching that climb in person - it would be sickening.

          I love the combination of technique, physical ability and problem solving to complete a climb. When I started, I had such little upper body strength and was eager to overcome that to improve. I am still not very good about 4 or so months in but the feeling of improving is addicting.

              @capslock janitor: I am not sure; where I go it is mostly bouldering which means no ropes but the climbs are not as high. I would assume at a rock climbing complex you require ropes and a harness as well as a belayer and you can climb much higher.

      No idea, my 6yo has been begging me so I took him last week. He climbed 5 stories high and felt like a god so we'll definitely be back.

      steepandcheap.com - it's a USA site so you need to use a forwarder. Best to do it with multiple items of clothing.

    As a climber in VIC I would offer the following advice with respect to gyms (well the ones I have been to)
    <>>>>
    Urban Climb Collingwood - Lots of space, very low climb density (lots of space between climbs), more expensive then most gyms, beginner friendly
    Urban Newstead - Not open yet
    Blochaus - Haven't been yet
    Cliffhangers - Mostly rope climbing with small boulder area, good selection of climbs, beginner friendly
    North Walls Indoor - Only rope climbing, good selection of climbs, beginner friendly
    Northside Boulders - Only bouldering, good range in climbs, medium climb density, beginner friendly

    anyone been to alexandria one before, last year? will it be packed?

    I went to Rydalmere one last year about 3pm, it was a bit busy to line up to sign a waiver and had to watch a short video but then there was no wait to climb the actual sections.
