  • Thanks OP, great price. Been waiting for a good deal on these.

  • dam. didn't see the 10tb wd elements deal for $258.54. They have identical wd reds inside.

Sorry not being too helpful on the details here, but the drives in the external will be white drives. Bit of pot luck what they are. Can be reds, or some people said old hgst drives? But discussions on heat/noise/vibrations too.

Also, no warranty. Personally I think these are a better buy for peace of mind.

So far the 10tb elements i've gotten from Amazon US has been the Reds previously. So far the 3 drives have been in perfect shape. Knock on wood. Was going to cancel this order but decided to just complete my other nas with 2 more 8tb.

      • Yea, got the 2x 10TBs white drives from last Amazon sales.
No problems running them in my unraid server. But I must say, the vibrations noise is pretty loud - even if relocate the server to another room I can still heard it.

These red drives should be alot quieter and comes with warranty.

    Newbie here…
Getting a 4 Bay Synology DS918+ NAS Unit for Plex.
I have a 10TB Red HDD. Is it ok to get an 8tb to go with it?

    • +2

Yes, you can format the drives using Synology Hybrid Raid (SHR). The last 2TB of the 10TB drive will be usable for storage, but won’t be duplicated in the array for redundancy unless you have another 10TB drive installed.

      I have the DS918+ too with 2x6TB (now +2x8TB with this deal :) ).

I think you are not going to be able to put both disks in the same pool (if that's what you are planning to with the new disk). With SHR you can't add smaller disks to a existing pool but it's OK to add bigger ones to an existing one.

One solution that I can think is to create a second pool with the new 8TB, copy all the information from the 10TB to the 8TB, delete the old pool and add the 10TB disk to the new storage pool.
Also, you will loose 2TB because of the size difference…

        Thanks for the replies everyone.
My mate wants to buy my 10TB, so I've ordered 2 of these 8TB for the new DS918+ instead.
Should make things a bit easier for me as a newbie.

  • Got 2, great price cheers OP!
