  • Is this equivalent/better than the Lii-500?

It's a little more expensive to get the AU plug unless you have one lying around.

      • Thanks, looks like the Lii is the way to go

it is good but doesn't test your batteries, lii-500 has a basic capacity tester.

    • The Lii-500 is better for charging NiMh batteries (e.g. eneloops). Specs are here, click on "download the manual": https://charger.nitecore.com/product/new-i4

The "New I4" will only charge NiMh batteries at 500mA maximum, and only 375mA if three or four batteries are inserted. The Lii-500 can charge at 1000mA, and it can do that current for any number of batteries. If you're charging Eneloop Pro AA batteries, The Lii-500 will take three hours, the New I4 will take about eight hours.

The difference is "I'll charge these batteries tonight, and they will be done before I go to bed" (Lii-500), versus "I'll leave this overnight, and hopefully I'll remember in the morning" (New I4). If your batteries aren't fully flat, the Lii-500 could let you charge twice, up to eight batteries, before going to bed.

The New I4 doesn't have a display either, just LEDs that light up. You can't judge the capacity of the batteries, and know when one is going bad.

However the New I4 will charge LiFePO4 batteries, if you have that type of battery (3.2V lithium). And if you only want to charge a single lithium battery at a time, the New I4 can charge it at a higher rate (1500mA) than the Lii-500 can (1000mA).

      • Does the Lii-500 automatically select the charging rate if required?

        • +1

Do you mean automatically choosing the charging current dependent on the battery size? Neither charger does that, but if you wait for the Aldi charger to come back on special, it does.

The Lii-500 defaults to 500mA for NiMh batteries. For the first ~10 seconds after inserting a battery, you can change the charging current, each button push moves you to the next setting in a loop: 500mA - 700mA - 1000mA - 300mA - and back to 500mA. So for AA eneloops, 700mA is best, so after you insert each battery, it's one button push. If you insert AAA batteries, I recommend 300mA for those, so it will be three button pushes after inserting each battery.

It may start at a different current for Li-ion batteries, I don't have any handy to check.
