4 stars on foodreviews beats blackhawk 3.5 star

Any better food (ie grainfree) for a similar price?

    • +1

We use meals for mutts. bit more expensive at full price, but I usually just buy a couple of bags when it's on special.

    • -2

      advance

      • Thats what I had them on for 7 years, was a little bit cheaper but according to petfoodreviews didn't have the greatest contents. When we started on it it was the only widely available aussie product.

        • yeah fair enough black hawk do make grain free https://www.petbarn.com.au/black-hawk-grain-free-kangaroo-ad…,

IMO though a bit of grain / meal is fine as long as its from a quality supplier and doesn't contain additives / growth enhancers.

@sludo: Pretty sure Advance is owned by Mars and Black Hawk was taken over by a big company I thought?
I remember awhile back Blackhawk changed the ingredients and isn't as good as it used to be.
I usually just get Farmers Market biscuits from Coles or Woolies when on special, it's not bad on food review sites.

            • @OneMoreTune: They did change their ingredients and it almost killed my dog…used to love black hawk now despise them for what it out my dog through

Is there any science to support grain free foods? I've always fed my pup grain free because it seems to be the 'go to', but wondering if it's more of a marketing tactic?

      • +1

        https://www.cnbc.com/2019/06/28/fda-investigates-possible-li…

"…Though the FDA said it is not yet known how certain diets may lead to heart disease in canines, it noted 90% of the foods identified in the reports were “grain-free,” meaning they did not contain soy, wheat, rice, barley or other grains, 93% contained peas or lentils and a “far smaller” portion contained potatoes or sweet potatoes. The FDA said there were no sources of protein, like chicken or lamb, that were predominant in the reported cases…"

Science, who knows, just like with Humans, recommendations and warnings seems to constantly flip flop back and forth.

      • +1

I have been reading some articles on how some research is coming through that grain free can actually be detrimental to a dogs health due to lack of taurine production causing DCM in some breeds.

Very early stages of research though. http://veterinarymedicine.dvm360.com/shedding-light-heart-di…

      • Does seem to be the 'activated almonds and kale' of dog food.
        Just marketing.

      • Great price, not sold on raw diets and am lazy but it's great to know what your pet is actually eating while also saving money.

    • Is it Kosher?

Waiting to see you on A Current Affair

  • how large are the food pieces? are they ok for small dogs or too large to bite through ?

    • They are small, my fox terrier has been on this for years.

    • it says on the bag 'all breeds, all sizes', and can confirm, a chihuahua would have no problem with them, they are small bite size

    • My pugs have been eating Black Hawk Chicken & Rice kibbles for years with no issues. They love this food :)

Stay loyal, meals for mutts, ivory coat.

All made in Australia and pretty well reviewed.

Stay loyal is the only one owned and made in Australia.

Most are owned by big corporations that really only care about profit.

  • Black hawk changed their recipe and it didn't work out well for my dog…she almost died

Don't buy big packs before your pooch actually tries it

    • +1

Our two dogs have used for years without a break and without any difference.

Sorry it happened to you but I doubt anyone would have problems moving forward.

      • Just like flea treatment some dogs react to certain things, some don't. You simply cannot paint with a broad brush when there's so many variables that exist.

Hopefully it helps the outliers to check before purchasing a large quantity

    • Didn't cause me any problems.

  • I received an email with a 30% off coupon.. can only be used in store.

  • Still no message to pick up click and collect order. How long do they usually take?

    • Mine came through a couple of hours after ordering
