  • Do people still use skype for actual voice calls?

Serious question: What do you recommend over Skype?

Let's say I'm travelling overseas and need to make a call, or I'm in Australia but my mobile plan has limited international minutes included, can you recommend a cheaper/more reliable method than Skype?

      • If you have internet to use skype, then why not use the free skype to skype, or facebook voice/video etc

        • I meant for calling a person (or a business) for whom you only have a phone number contact. You need to be able to stay on the line for 20 minutes.

E.g.: You're overseas, three ATMs just rejected your bank card, and you want to check with your bank that there are no issues with your account, to confirm that it's just an issue with those ATMs.

Do you know of a better way to do this than Skype?

@blimpyboy: I just use the same voip service I use from home. So Mynetfone etc.

            • @Major Mess: Samsung phones do not have the SIP settings out of the box as Pixel phones have. If you are using an Android phone, which SIP app do you recommend?

Nothing beats Skype for free international calls to America especially dealing with call centres.

    • I will need skype to call banks as long as banks still randomly blocks my credit/debit card for "security reasons" and ask me to call back.

  • With all these unlimited call and included overseas minutes, i haven't used my Skype since

    • You’ll find it useful when you’re travelling overseas. Especially when accounts and bank card locks up because they suspect fraud.

      • I had the skype unlimited wolrd subscription since 2007, they actually gave you 3 free skype numbers, probably useful back then without those unlimited call plan.
As for overseas travel, i am always well prepared, a prepaid roaming sim card, cash in my wallet, notify the bank of my travel.

This deal would have been amazing in about 2003

Now imagine you read that title and didn't know WHAT Alexa is.

    • 😂😂

  • Ummmm. I actually don’t know anybody without whatsapp so I just use that for voice and video calls now anywhere I am. The key is to get data…

Haven’t used Skype in 10 years.

    • Never heard of it, what is whatsapp? I occasionally use Skype for video calls and the odd voice, and don't see any issues.

  • This is good for anyone with grey hair

  • My echo dot's are set up on my US amazon account, it allows for free calls to U.S., U.K., Canada, and Mexico.

Has anyone with an Aussie account tried to see if Alexa can call phones in those countries?

The skype deal has a few more countries but is limited for a few months, unlike the standard amazon deal that just allows ongoing free calls.
