Yamaha YAS-108B 120W Soundbar $165 + Delivery (Free C&C) @ Harvey Norman

1110

An Ozbargain favourite from an Ozbargain infamous company. About $6 more than a recent Good Guys deal but that's expired so… I don't have it so can't comment on the quality, but word on the internet is that it's pretty decent and an upgrade to TV sound. Does not come with a subwoofer but can be added.

I checked 2000, 3000, 4000 postcodes and plenty of stores to pickup from, delivery came out to $7.95 to a Brisbane postcode for me which is pretty good for a soundbar.

Thanks to aspirepranesh post for the heads up to HN epic audio sale, not sure when it expires, end of the month?

I've had this soundbar for a year now, and its always had issue with 4k passthrough and ARC. Just an FYI if this is your intended setup - otherwise a great bar.

    • I also have this issue. Cannot get ARC to work no matter what. Haven't tried 4k pass through.

      • Ah so it's not only me that has issues with ARC (had to resort to 3.5mm input). Here I thought it was my cheapo GVA TV.

        • Nup, the ARC is total junk…
I have the 108, 107 and 106 and none of them work with my TCL TV. The 106 works with a Samsung TV and the 107 works with a Panasonic TV (sometimes).. Optical works fine though if you're okay with an extra remote

          • @lachhelix: If you use the optical and HDMI can you utilise HDMI CEC to turn off and on and adjust volume with the tv remote?

            • +1

@Circly: I could use CEC for power on/off but volume control depending on the TV - some would let you (TCL) but others (the Panasonic) had a fixed 100% volume through optical.
A work around would be to just use the headphone jack on the TV (if you're not bothered with sound quality..)

Did you guys update the firmware?

Arc works fine for me, what do you mean about passthrough?

I've got Xbox 4k hdr working and apple 4k tv hdr working as well as Netlfix 4k hdr through the TV's inbuilt app

      • 4K passthrough means running a device with 4K resolution through the soundbar into the TV (soundbar connects them both together). I have issues with Vodafone TV and laptop.

    • I have the sub version and have found the same.

Also can’t seem to get the ‘auto-off’ function to work when I accidentally leave it on, anyone else?

      • My auto off function definitely works

        • auto off works fine for me too.

I just got this soundbar the other week and experienced similar problems. I originally had my Vodafone TV connected to the soundbar and then tried to connect it all through ARC but it never worked. I ended up connecting the Vodafone TV directly to my TV, connected the soundbar separately through ARC and changed the output in my TV sound settings from PCM to RAW.

      • With that setup, do you get sound through the soundbar but cna still control the TV and soundbar with one remote?

        • Yeah you can but I control it mostly through the Vodafone TV remote. I don't have CEC volume control on because its a nightmare with my Kogan TV but when I watch something with a DTS 5.1 soundtrack, it gets sent straight to the soundbar and I have to use either the soundbar remote or the TV remote to change the volume.
I also use these HDMI cables btw: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/cables-charging/gtek-premium-certi…

    • I am unsure whether my ARC issue is with the TV or the Soundbar. CEC functions mostly correctly (soundbar powers on and off with the tv), however no audio comes through to the soundbar. In the end had to ditch ARC and use Optical (which is okay since the soundbar can only decode DTS and Dolby Digital). Annoying bit is the soundbar not powering on and off with the TV.

Firmware is up to date at version 4.00

      • What tv do you have?

I have a 2018 tcl 65p6us and a few $4 high speed HDMI cables from office works.

I couldn't get anything to work initially because I had to change a bunch of settings on my TV, but everything works flawlessly now.

        • +1

Got the TCL 64P4US (also 2018, but no Android TV). I would be interested to know your settings. I had the TCL guy on the phone walk me through a bunch of different configurations but we couldn't get anything to work.

          • +1

@djsweet: Same issue here, while using ARC it works fine on the first run but after a restart I have to toggle HDMI from the soudbar remote in order to make it work otherwise no sound comes out of it.
BTW i'm using it with mi TV box.

        • @Teer3x Can you share your TV settings? I have the same TV model. I did some google around but found very limited information. Thanks

        • Don't know how to delete comments…

      • It'll be the soundbar - none of the last 3 Yamaha soundbar revisions work properly in my different set-ups

    • Hey anyone who has this, in the pics its wall mounted, I assume it can sit at the right angle on a table below a tv?
      Thanks!!

      • Yeah sure can!

    • Just to elaborate for others having issues.

      Panasonic 4k TV with ARC
Vodafone TV $K Player with ARC

I can get arc working if i setup both devices for ARC, but occassionally it will flicker while running 4K passthrough. If i connect my laptop via the soundbar passthrough, I get constant flicker. I have kept ARC on and jsut tolerated the issues because i really like having a single remote to control power, volume and TV functions.

Bought a couple of these in one of the recent Good Guy deals, really liking them. There's a great Clear Voice feature which makes dialogue a bit clearer and easier to understand. Haven't had as much of a need for subtitles with this speaker.

What sub has been the most popular to add just a bit more depth to the sound?

    an Ozbargain infamous company

You'd think people would vote for a party that Gerry and all the other wealthy rulers of Australia can't pay off to screw everybody else for their own benefit.

But instead the plebs fruitlessly rage about Gerry making the payment without blaming themselves for making idiotic voting choices.

  • Are Soundbars any good for computer gaming? My old logitech speakers suffer too much from interference.

    • Well it's nearly 90cm in width…

    • -2

why can't you use a headset/mic combo - surely that's the best esp in games where hearing enemy sounds is important (i.e. most fps games).

i've got an expensive logitech G930 wireless headset which is awesome, but ive also got a cheap $20~ ebay headset from china which is pretty dam good too.

Better go to officeworks for pricebeat, than shopping at Harvey Norman.

The new YAS109b has been announced so you might see this older model even cheaper soon. New model has built-in Alexa support which the YAS108b does not.

    • +1

Or if you have a google home or Amazon echo (Alexa) lying around you could just plug it into the AUX input on YAS-108 or link it with Bluetooth.

  • Read a lot about ARC problems with Hisense tv's, anyone know if they fixed the bugs or if there's just a setup trick?

    • I bought the YAS108 last month and I have arc issues with my Hisense P7. It connects and works OK for a day or two and then disconnects itself. The only way to reconnect is to unplug both devices from the power and setup again, which is a ballache. I ended up plugging in the optical cable too and it continues to function but I lose the ability to control volume with the TV remote. I haven't looked into updating the firmware yet.

The soundbar itself is decent. I have it in a large open-plan living room and it struggles a bit but I imagine it would be great in a smaller space. The only other letdown is a lack of auto-volume levelling or dynamic range control which means I'm frequently reaching for the volume buttons when switching sources.

Would prefer to buy anywhere else than Hardly Normal.

    • Price match OW.

  • Very nice soundbar. Can't complain. Good for bedrooms.

  • +1

Free delivery with Shipster if you have it.

  • I copped one of these for around $177 from the recent good guys deal. This is a good price. Good for smaller rooms, I only got mine for use with a spare tv in a spare bedroom and I'm happy with it.

  • +2

Love mine! You should be able to price match @ Officeworks to get it for $156.75 Delivered :)

    YASSS

  • I'd be keen to get one of these but I read a lot of complaints about ARC functionality.

The optical (Toslink) port on my Hisense TV is broken so I'd have to rely on an HDMI connection.
Ideally a direct link between TV (out) and the soundbar, as I will be hooking up several STB devices to the TV.
    Would this work?

    • +1

Works perfectly fine with my kogan tv and xiaomi mibox. Can use either remote for volume and power on off.

  • So I can plug this sound bar into my old plasma HDMI port?

    • +1

If it has a HDMI out, yes i believe so.

      • Thank you!

  • I've no issues with mine re the ARC after changing the cables - it seemed to be a little fussy that way. If you need the subwoofer (and I'd argue you don't if you want to stay uncluttered, as this does a pretty good job), perhaps consider the YAS-207. It's almost twice this price, but you get a matching sub…
    https://www.harveynorman.com.au/yamaha-yas-207-ats-soundbar-…

    • The YAS-207 subwoofer is wireless, so in all fairness that does reduce the clutter a fair bit.

      • Fair enough. But it still fails the “another box” test for clutter around the TV.

        • Put it behind the TV / cabinet, or between or behind the couch so it’s hidden.

  • Does anyone have experience wall-mounting this unit? I'm interested in whether it sounds any different given the change of orientation. The CNET review mentions gyroscopic optimisation but if it's just software-based that sounds like marketing BS.

    • +1

In my experience with the YAS-106 (which claims the same gyro optimising) yes it does sound different. Less bass punch and extension. Keep in mind only the bass & mid woofers point upwards (or forwards in wall-mount position) and the tweeters point forwards (or downwards in wall-mount), which I find odd in design (high-frequencies are most directional so made to point downwards is odd).

      • Ok thanks. I bought one so I'll just have a play and see how I go.

  • can anyone comment on pairing this with the cheapo Soniq 55" bought on Amazon prime day. cheers

    • I also bought the Soniq TV on the Amazon sale. The TV sound is the worst hey?

  • A little off topic but you all seem to know what you are talking about. I have a very open house with my main Samsung 65 inch sitting in a corner of my family/meals/kitchen area which is 11m long and 5m wide. The area is in the middle of the house in an open L shape with a large games room coming off it that has raked ceiling. The area where the TV is situated has the standard heigh ceiling. There are no doors in this room so no way of closing sound in so very open area. Would a soundbar be effective in a room such as this? I was thinking of getting a more expensive S/B with a separate subbie or am I better off with sticking to a traditional set up of 5.1 speakers? Any suggests would be appreciated as most forums start to get so off track on the topic and end up being of no advice at all.

  • When selecting TV to use its own speakers I get independent volumes between the TV and sound bar. TV remote changes TV speaker volume and sound bar remote changes sound bar volume.

When selecting TV to use external speakers the TV remote does not work and sound bar remote changes sound bar volume.

Anyway to make it use TV remote to change either both or just sound bar volume?

Also I can't tell what volume sound bar is besides listening to it. The sound bar has no volume indicator and nothing appears on the TV.

  • Has anyone got ARC IN going with the LG B8?
