    This won't last long

    • I was just looking at this on ebay, noticed 6 quick purchases. Thought oh sh*t maybe already on ozb, sure enough it was, bought it quick.

      • +1

Never under estimate the bargain of the Oz

    • There's another listing that's cheaper than this for those still wanting it
      @ shallothead - eBay $283

  • how are people's experience with using this on a new b450 tomahawk?
    or any b450

    • +3

I have B450 Mortar (kinda like the MATX version of the Tomahawk). My suggestion: get really good RAM (best to know the actual RAM chips). The whole memory mess has not gone away for Ryzen 3xxx series, at least not with B450/X470 boards. I don't have X570 board. Any middle ground type RAM modules are really lottery.

I currently have a headache that a pair of my DDR4-3200 RAM modules simply don't play nice with my AMD Ryzen setup (failed memory tests). Problem is I cannot re-produce the error when I put them on my intel system. I am going to have a tough time to convincing the retailer to let me replace or refund (pretty sure they would test using intel). It is unsafe to just go by QVL or the RAM people have had success. I actually bought two sets of the same RAM modules. The other set have no issue whatsoever (even amongst OZBers, people get different results from same brand and type of RAMs). The motherboard is also inconsistent on the RAM settings side. What's shown in BIOS isn't always accurate. It kept on detecting only some of the XMP memory settings. However, after multiple clear CMOS settings (had to use a jumper) and restore to default multiple times, it eventually detected all the settings correctly.

Also, we know MSI B450 boards have a relatively small BIOS chip size (half of X570). MSI had to removed the more graphical version of the BIOS - it's no issue, I always use the advanced mode anyway).

      • Thanks for this great info. I'm thinking of building a similar setup myself. What RAM would you recommend? I hear that the ryzen "sweet spot" is 3600mhz, but the B450 boards dont go that high.

        • +1

MSI B450 Tomahawk page: "Supports DDR4 Memory, up to 3466(OC) MHz"

          I personally bought 3200MHz C16. There's a useful calculator: https://notkyon.moe/ram-latency.htm

Edit: Just read you said it doesn't go up to 3600MHz, which is right. My bad.

          • @wheretobuychocettes: What you want is either 3200CL14 or 3600CL16.

Both should perform the same so whatever is cheaper.

            • @[Deactivated]: The cost on 3200C14 was a little too crazy compared to C16. Having said that, apparently RAM prices are crashing when ~3 weeks ago there was a shortage and prices shot up overnight. Ah well. Not like I need the best of the best. I can settle. =]

          • @wheretobuychocettes: yes I was looking at the MSI B450 Tomahawk last night exactly for that purpose.. I figured throw a couple of sticks of G.Skill Trident Z Royal 3600MHz RAM and an AMD 3600 now, upgrade to a 3900X in a year or three.

EDIT: sigh.. yeah max 3466 MHz RAM..

EDIT 2: ok the B450 Tomahawk MAX ($189 in Aus) supports up to OC 4133 MHz RAM - https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/B450-TOMAHAWK-MAX/Specificat…

        • +2

          I have multiple tomahawks b450 doing 3600mhz cl16 with 0 issues.

          • @trestylez: Which RAM modules? DDR4-3600 are all in a different price bracket compared to DDR4-3200/3000 (at least in the retail store I visited). I don't need/want that speed. Gaming isn't a priority for me.

P.S. even that dodgy DDR4-3200 (that set is in the MSI QVL list mind you) boots/runs fine in Windows 10. But you run memory test, errors do pop up.

But, now thinking about it, the time saved not needing to waste time messing around with memory would have been a better choice.

        • Micron E-Die kits (DDR4-3000 or DDR4-3200 or DDR4-3600+, just buy the kits with AES in the model # and they'll likely all reach DDR4-3600 with CL16). $110 on newegg and $130-135 at mwave and other local shops.

        • B450 boards only advertise supporting up to 3433mhz due to the ryzen 2000 capabilities. I'd imagine most will be able to do 3600 easily with the ryzen 3000. I'm running the B450 carbon pro with my 3700x and 3600mhz works fine.

      • Hey Netsurfer, from what I understand, in Oz, if an item you bought does not do what it is intended for, then you should be able to get a refund. If you bought from O.S, then yeah, its not easy. Also, if you used Paypal, then getting a refund should be fairly easy as well.

        • I'll need to bring my PC there and second set of RAMs (to demonstrate it is not a motherboard issue). I bought the motherboard and RAM modules from the same store. It's just unlikely standard faulty RAM issue, it happens on every motherboard and memtest will report error. I might have a chance since it is a physical store. Doing all these online will be hard.

        • If the ram works and the motherboard/ryzen is the issue, then you dont have a recourse as far as I understand under consumer law.

          • @RI4V4N: I don't think that's how Australian consumer law works. Our laws protect the consumer more than the retailer. If he's getting nowhere, i'd just rattle off a few fancy words and mention the ombudsman. I"m sure that would work.

Here is a link. I read this as a product that has been purchased that is not suitable, for whatever reason. It's like buying a part for a car only to get home and it doesn't fit. Happens all the time.

            https://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/consumer-rights-guarantees…

      • first bios release i had ram issues… second bios for MSI motar B450 all ram works great at XMP settings. update that bios bra

team group deleta 3000mhz ram and gskill 3000mhz ram work great with xmp settings

dont change voltage of ram.. leave it on default AUTO/// otherwise u will have issues.

    • I had issues - bios flash wasn't working.

had to borrow a 2200 to flash forward then after installation it wouldnt boot correctly.

Gave up ~ returned it ~ (going through the process now)

    • Just finished a build of a 3700x on the B450 tomahawk last night. Buggy as hell. I had to do the bios flashback since i didn't have a previous gen ryzen chip.

Using it now to type this, it's stable when it POSTS. When you turn it off, you'd have to do a sequence of things to make it work again. Tried the 17, 18, 19 and the 19 beta bios for this one. Only the 18 works right now. The last AMD's I had were the Semprons/Durons which was some time ago. Those were easier to build.

      • Based on what you mentioned, it is a RAM related issue still. That's what I had earlier on with the setup. Very painful. You need to ensure after a power off, the next boot up will be fast (look for the 4 LEDs, if it is stucked on RAM for a while, then sort of look like the PC did its own mini reboot), you still have a RAM issue.

My issue was after all that is sorted (took a long time to sort out). Then, I did a memory test. The bad news continued… I don't think it is a good idea to pretend things are all good (with that dodgy pair of RAMs, boot to Windows 10 is fine (even after shutdown)).

Yeah, my last AMD system, Athlon, the RAM part was plug and play pretty much. So easy to assemble to get it working.

    • bought a ryzen 3600 day 1 and picked up a b450 tomahawk and it works perfectly, no issues. Didnt have a spare cpu so i used q-flash or whatever its called where you plug in a usb and press the button to flash the bios with the new bios that supported ryzen 3000 series and took 2 minutes. Usb had to be formatted to fat32 so make note of that if you dont have a back up computer to reformat it to that if you forget.

Haven't overclocked yet as ill likely only get to 4.3ghz from 4.2ghz but will try in the future since right now im using the stock cooler (old hyper 212x didnt support am4 so cant mount). PBO works like a charm so if i can only get an extra 100mhz overclock then i will just stick with pbo as it will be more power efficient.

Using corsair vengeance pro lpx rgb @3200mhz and works perfectly, just had to enable xmp and thats it. Bios had extensive ram overclocking options and features as well as for the cpu.

Everything is running stably and the motherboard is pretty good, i think with the new bios it may be missing some features but its most likely they just got moved to another menu or location.

I was just about to post this once I bought mine, it’s a great deal for killer price to performance! Was originally going to buy a 3700x but decided that money will be better put into a graphics card for 1440p gaming.
Now I just have to wait for the AIB models of the 5700xt and my first pc build will be done!

    • What's your full specs?

  • +1

    Thanks OP bought

  • +3

Finally time to retire the i7 3770k. Thanks OP

    • +3

      Yes, retiring the ol 2500k

      • +5

well and truely a good value chip

    • I have a 3770, but also not so sure about how good this ryzen shit is if half their ram and mobos have issues and problems.

      • mine ram and motherboard (b450 tomahawk) had no problems although ymmv. but pretty sure most of the issues have been ironed out.
Upgraded from a 3570 and its way better. Didnt realise it was bottlenecking me in games that much (mostly bf5) and i only had a rx 470.

      • Ryzen 1st gen been rock solid here. The latest seems even better RAM wise.

Don't think you'll run into issues.

      • no issues at all… the issue is that people dont know what there doing.. changing voltage to 1.35 for the ram when they NEED to leave it on Auto and only just enable XMP settings. (also leave the CPU voltage on auto)

beta bios also had issues with some ram XMP.. but 2 days after release board makers released real bios's for B450/X470 :) My MSI B450 Mortar titanium runs solid with 32GB's 4x8 Gskill 30000mhz trident RGB and also tried Team group Delta 3000Mhz RGB.. rock solid not a single issue..

Set bios to default and the only thing people should change is xmp to profile 1 or 2

then in windows install AMD master and go into Power options and set the system to Ryzen Balanced :) so the CPU idles at 0.6-1.2v boosts to 4.5v full load single workload and 1.32v multi core full load.

CPU-Z will show you your true CPU's idle voltage and if its higher then 1v then try disabling all running programs. My corsair RGB keyboard software was maxing out CPU usage voltage to 1.47v until i killed it and the voltage droped to 0.6v

AMD Master will show max voltage as it itself maxed out the CPU's just at idle lol

    Thanks OP!

Awesome to see the new CPU prices over the last few weeks. I remember looking at upgrading my PC a few months ago and it just wasn't worth it for the small performance increase. Glad I didn't upgrade back then.

  • +4

Well, I've spent the past two weeks researching my new PC build and I wasn't really ready to start buying stuff yet but at this price I couldn't resist.

    Let The Build officially commence!

    • yeah i was in the same boat but a friend sold me their x570 board for $150 and with RAM price dropping what are you supposed to do… :D

  • +1

Sweet i jumped on this deal

  • +5

For anyone needing RAM for their build, I suggest looking at Micron E-Die and the cheapest tend to be Crucial Ballistix LT sticks with "AES" in the model number. It doesn't matter if you buy DDR4-3000 or DDR4-3200 E-Die bins, the likelihood is, it'll take you 30 seconds to OC it to DDR4-3600 CL16 with a slight voltage increase.

Cheapest I can find 16GB for E-die $109 via newegg (a week or two to arrive) and ~$130 locally here in Aus. A bargain compared to Samsung B-die which is generally 2x the price.

  • out of stock, congrats to those that got in for this price

    • +3

Search for other sellers on eBay. azeshop has it for the same price and wireless1 has it for $4 more if you missed out.

  • Can anyone recommend a good motherboard to use with these CPUs?

    • +1

Depends on your needs but generally the MSI b450 tomahawk is a great value to pair with this

    • b450 tomahawk max or b450m mortar max mAtx are both new and support ryzen 3000 out of the box that's what im going to look for

      • not quite out of the box (you will need to do a BIOS update over USB) but at least you won't need to get your local computer shop to do it for you

      • Any mITX boards for a Masterbox q300L case that work with ryzen 3600 out of the box that you know of?

        Cheers!

        • +1

Use this spreadsheet with filters to dial in what you need. Looks like there aren't any previous-gen ITX boards that support flashback so you'll have to buy a current-gen mobo

  • Deliberated and missed out, my own fault.

I think I need to know what I want first and jump on it.

What would be the best CPU (price/performance) if I had a 2080Ti and wanted to play games like Doom Eternal at 1440p / 120fps
But then also play games like Cyberpunk 2077 at 4K / 60fps.
    At the highest settings.

Understanding that we don't have specs yet, but games of that ilk.

Appreciate replies to my dumb question.

    • +1

this would be fine, however since you have such a beast GPU, you should at least consider the 3700X for 2 extra cores, keeping it all in line and future proofed. actually the 3900X is more of a CPU for that kind of GPU!

      • Legend, thanks.

I'll keep an eye out and jump at the next sale.

        I don't have a 2080Ti yet, but that's what I'll likely buy.

  • TOO LATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • +1

Ryzen processors selling like hot cakes.

    • at least AMD CPUs don't get hot enough now to bake cakes, like they used to.

      • loving my Ryzen R7 3700X :) so much faster then then i3 6100T i upgraded from
