  • SCA sell a cheaper brand that is complete rubbish. Is this brand much better. Anyone worked with Rockwell tools.

    • I have the Rockwell Impact Driver with 3AH battery, very happy with the unit and it cost less for the whole thing than just the AEG impact driver skin

  • +1

Is this good for beginners. Have a car with swirl and watermarks. Any tips.

    • Some tips. Wash the car very well. Do a clay bar, than with a mild pad and mild cut do the first polish very slow. After just use a soft pad with a good polish like 457 gelson finish polish and done.

      • +1

@femelo. Thanks for the tips. Will this Rockwell polisher be worth getting.

        • +2

Sorry true I didn't answer the question. I don't know never used this type of machine e before ways used the professional one like makita but they are 300 plus. But I guess if is just to make looking better will do de job. Is not about the machine is more about the technique the type of pad and cut you use.
BTW buy the pads on ebay. The hard one use the orange the soft use the black

          • @Femelo: I Just use a Cordless drill with pads. For your own big car clean… wash, clay mit, iron remover, compound, polish and wax followed by a ceramic coating you can buy online and last quite a long time. https://youtu.be/2Dkz0udbxAM

            • @TRAVELO: Haha thanks. I used to work as car detailer. My small little shit SUV ford ecosport has 3 layer of paint protection and is smooth as hell.. But for who is beginner like most of my friends a good clay bar with 2 polish and cut using any machine will make the car look like almost new. Haha yeah a I saw this vidoe before quite good. Everyone should see ir vefore even normally wash a car. Thx

    • +2

Yes. This is perfect for beginners. The absolute requirement for beginner DIY paint correction (polishing / compound) is that it is a dual action machine, which this is. You won't find any better <$200, when you get to the pro detailing gear like Das tools, Shine Mate and Rupes.

  • If you're on a really tight budget this is the best and safest (for your paint) polisher you can get.

I personally got a Concours 900 which, along with all their nearly identical counterparts from other brands, is a great beginner polisher.
I went second hand and got a bunch of polishes and some pads thrown in for $200 all in which is probably the best value per dollar option.

    • Sounds good! Where from? You have a link to this product?

      • I got it second hand. I'm not sure if they still make them, not sure which model has superseded them sorry.

  • Good for a tight budget but the vibration you get from m this machine is what I'd imagine a jackhammer feels like.

If you've got a bit more cash to spend. Get a shinemate polisher from Waxit. Much gentler and better quality but not $57 cheap like this.

    • +1

Vibration isn't as bad as you say, I've corrected several cars without feeling fatigued using this. But I've never tried a super expensive unit so I imagine you wouldn't want to go back to this if you did.

You can also take this unit apart and grease the bearings to dampen vibration and noise considerably. Plenty of guides online (for the Harbor Freight DA which is the same unit sold in US).

I have this - great for the price - never used anything else to compare with -

You tube polishing car - you will fine the one that suits you -

I still go with the section at a time - light dry then buff.

someone here - has the knowledge when it come to washing and polishing car - I'll try and find the link.

sry couldn't find the post - heres a good vid https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3t7jULUCpc

No sure if you were talking about this post (I’m not the author):

“ash, clay bar, compounding to remove defects if any, polishing, sealant then wax or wax. Enjoy the shine.

I am preparing to do detailing first time and after months if research on whirlpool, youtube and autogeek these are the products I have shortlisted:

Wash Meguiars Gold class with foam cannon and two bucket method
      Clay Meguiars clay kit
      Compound with Meguirs UC
      Polish Autoglym Super Resin Polish
      Wax Collinite 845
      Rockwell DA polisher from Supercheap
Lake Country CCS pads from Waxit

      Orange for compounding
      White for polishing
      Red for Waxing”

      • +1

        Yup. That was me.

      • +1

that is it - well done - follow that cant go wrong

      • +1

Very good list for beginners. My only change would be to swap out Super Resin Polish for an actual polish such as Megs Ultimate Polish (very similar to M205 often used by US guys) or better, Scholl S30+ if you're ordering from Waxit already. SRP is actually an 'all in one' glaze which includes fillers / waxes, as a polish it is very very mild and if you're already using Collinite then there's no real benefit to using SRP.

Would also add a 5" backing plate (cheapy from eBay / Aliexpress) for this Rockwell, to use 5.5" Lake Country pads. 6" is too big IMO.

I would also say the snow foam step can be skipped if one doesn't already own a pressure washer - it's not worth spending $150 minimum from scratch, just for this step.

I guess the list is also missing microfibre towels (best $$$ / quality is the bulk pack at Costco) and any wheel treatment. I would also pick up a few hand applicator pads as personally I prefer to apply wax by hand rather than machine, but to each their own.

      • Wash Meguiars Gold class $29.99 1.89Lt SCA. Has been cheap for 2 pack at Costco.
bowdens-own-2-bucket-pack-bobwash with grit guards. $69.99 SCA
Maguaris quick clay kit - $26.26 SCA
Compound with Meguirs UC - $29.99 450ml SCA
Polish Autoglym Super Resin Polish - $25.89 for 500ml SCA
        Wax Collinite 845 $39.95 Waxit
Rockwell DA polisher from Supercheap $57.97
Lake Country CCS pads from Waxit or Ebay 11 X 7inch polishing pad kit local seller for $19.56

Just my quick look, so I can start organising what I need. Now I need a test car to try it on before doing my own.

      • you can skip compound if your swirls are only light.

compounding is more gritty and will cut off more of your clear coat.

      • Before the wax to correct most of the swril the cut will create gelson 457 very good compound

I've got this polisher and I'd say this is an excellent price at under $60. It's a DA polisher so it's good for beginners but as some have said, it vibrates a bit, but better than those cordless rubbish that selling for the same prices. At this price, it's a no brainer for a beginner and it all depends on the technique, pad and cutting compound more than anything. I've changed from the stock 7" plate to a 5" plate with eBay honeycomb pads and results are decent.

    • +1

can you elaborate on the types of pads to get? What's good for polishing? Waxing?

      • +1

        180mm hook and loop pads.

In case you need it this weekend, these are also half price in store with all the other Rockwell tools.

        https://www.supercheapauto.com.au/catalogue-sale-1?prefn1=sr…

      • Order a 5" backing plate, change the backing plate.

Lake country CCS pads are highly regarded. Orange for light/mod cutting with compound, white for polishing, and gray/red for final waxing.

  • goood deal

  • I have this polisher but not used any other.
But at apx $60 with 2 year warranty is a bargain, price comparing to a new $550 Rupes.
SCA unit having a random orbital action won't overcut or scorch the paint easily which makes it ideal for the beginner.
Didn't think vibration was an issue, but it is a little noisy.
I learnt to use it watching youtube's. Washed car, then used Meguiar's ultimate compound by machine (setting 1 to spread polish and set 4 to polish) and finished off by hand with Maguiar's carnauba wax. Very pleased with the result and no swirl marks or damaged paint. Meguiar's product worked well on my car, would suggest talking to CSA paint guru or other for polish product advice. If your a beginner be patient and take your time you can achieve remarkable results with this machine.

Doesn't every Ozbargainer have a standard issue QC35 or XM3 to use with this? Noise shouldn't be an issue!

      • Yeah I do have an Xm3. So should NC the polisher. OK I'm sold.

        • +1

Just wasn't quick enough to get one close by. Will have to drive down to Carrum Downs tomorrow now. You snooze you lose on these deals.

  • Can this be used for floors?

  • Thanks, got it using the code and $20 from the ebay plus deal.

Does anyone know if the backing pad can be swapped? I want to also use it with 2 inch sanding discs.

  • Damn Ozb makin' me buy stuff

  • Bought it for $90 2 months ago and haven’t had a chance to use it yet. Regretting the early purchase now

  • Limited stock in Sydney, only Rockdale.

Thank you for saving me $57

    • I mananaged to get click and collect at any store near me… it kept defaulting to delivered (even though I selected a store for click and collect, and it said "in stock") - but on the final checkout page you can change it to click and collect and select the store.

  • Cheers OP . Got one delivered

  • I've already got one of these - https://www.supercheapauto.com.au/p/rockwell-shopseries-rock…

    Is this a lot better?

    • I've been researching the DA in the post and it has more power than the one you have so would reduce effort and time it would take to get to a better finish and would also help with removing swirls.

  • Is this orbital or random orbital?

  • +1

I have being using this one for 2 years.
Not bad at all but it's a little noisy.
Every time I use it I have to close the garage door.

  • Purchased this on the 21st for $95.48 and I'm a supercheap member. Would I get a credit?

  • +2

This is a decent machine. As already mentioned, it is quite loud and does vibrate a bit. Also, if you are going for the best possible result, it is best to change to a 5.5" backing plate and use half decent pads. I went with a Meguiars backing plate and used Hexlogic pads.

    • Where did you get the 5.5in backing plate? Do any backing plates work with this Rockwell?

      • +1

I got mine off amazon US a few years ago. Check sparesbox, i think they sell it too. You just have to make sure the plate is designed for a Dual action and not a rotary as they are different.

        • +1

          https://www.sparesbox.com.au/part/meguiars-da-backing-plate-…

Ouchi on the price, but suppose the discounted price on the Rockwell covers it. Might have to stick with the large disk first off.

          • @Melb69: I don't get why go to a smaller diameter pad. more control?

            • +2

              @mr_asstight: Couple of reasons:
              1. Smaller is better for getting into the contours of the car - 6" is a bit unwieldly for fenders with aggressive styling, or narrow parts like the boot lip
              2. This Rockwell unit isn't so powerful compared to pro detailing gear, so 5" instead of 6" helps it put the power down just a bit more
              3. 5.5" pads are a standard size so there are more choices, and they are cheaper

The backing plate itself makes very little difference IMO and the quality is not important compared to the actual pads, so I just use a cheapie eBay backing plate; it has a bit of flex and it has done the job on multiple cars perfectly. Especially since the prices for Aussies feels like a rort compared to the US prices.

I use this one specifically but any with 5/16" thread will do the job:
              https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/SPTA-2pc-5-125mm-5-16-24-Thread-…

              • @Soothsayer: thanks. I get that you should have a smaller backing pad so you get some extra space to avoid cases where the angle of the DA is too tilted and the backing pad scrapes the paint. But wouldn't you want a 4" backing plate with 5" pads to have a little more room?

              • @Soothsayer: Have you looked into getting extension bars for the backing plates?

I want to get a 2inch for smaller spots but can't seem to find extenders that would suit 5/16 thread plates.

  • Does anyone know what the equivalent colour Lake Country pad would be to the pad that comes with this in the box? Should I just use what comes with it for polishing or should I get a Lake Country white pad? Do they even come in sizes that fit this backing plate?
