  • user serviceable battery replacement ?

    • Yes, very easy to do. Tooless. Eaton even has a video guide to help you.

    Is it still $75? I see $95.

Edited the title to make it clearer.

    • Me too.
      Edit, Thanks OP, much better.

  • Good UPS, I have the 700VA version and it's been going strong since 2014.

  • do these connect to PC for automatic safe shutdown, or do they just supply backup power?

    • +1

Connects to PC via USB cable. Requires running monitoring software to initiate shutdown with loss of AC power.

I have not seen a consumer grade UPS that solely provides backup power but does not report its power status. Before USB was invented, UPS's had used the RS-232 serial interface for reporting. Have you seen an UPS model that cannot report its status? Please let us know so we can avoid such inferior product.

  • anyone used or know if this will work well with synology NAS (DS1512+) … for a graceful shutdown ?

  • Does this UPS have any noise during normal operation? Or totally silent?

    • Totally silent during normal operation.

Quotes about 4min standby power on power outage, but at 300w rating I reckon you'd struggle to get that on even your average pc or home server… especially after a year or two of service.

A couple of minutes is certainly enough for a safe shutdown, but if you intend on having this device run for any longer than that get something bigger!

    • I have already mentioned this as one of its limitations, and given a link to Eaton's product selector and power calculator. What is your point in repeating?

      • My point was that you had not addressed the advertised 4 minute run time as claimed, and I was simply assisting those that may rely on it.

I was adding an opinion as to unlikelihood of the advertised claim on the website, based on real world application.
If you could kindly point me to where you did that already, that might clarify your above post that I've repeated something you've addressed?

I've offered an opinion and additional assistance to those contemplating a purchase of the above item, and I've repeated nothing you've said.

Your curt post portrays personal offence, and I'm not entirely sure why? Do you find it offensive that someone wants to help others make a more informed purchase? You've been here long enough to know how this place works. Relax.

On what basis did you form your reckoning? Where are these real world application run time data on which you based this opinion? Your opinion read like baseless product bashing.

The claimed 4 minutes of run time at 300W was taken from Eaton's specifications. After >3 years of service, the battery capacity on my UPS is at 96%, giving ~12 minutes of power at my PC's 130W load. This was confirmed during a recent extended power outage and this was also in accordance with Eaton's published figures. My observation directly contradicted your reckoning that this UPS would struggle to provide sufficient backup power after a year or two.

          • @alvian: Ok.

So first I'm repeating you… and when it became clear that I wasn't and your comment was clearly out of line, you've changed tact completely and now I'm just plain wrong?

I neither have the time nor inclination to engage with you, because its clear you're simply out to troll me for the sake of trolling.

            Good day sir.

            • @UFO: Since you asserted a couple of minutes is certainly enough for a safe shutdown is not a repeat of only enough to enable a graceful shutdown of your computer, what is the point in prolonging the discussion.

Your curt post portrays personal offence, and I'm not entirely sure why? Do you find it offensive that someone wants to help others make a more informed purchase?

You asked why and I showed you why. You have no evidence to back up what you wrote and I have showed that you were wrong using published specifications and real data.

Good day and good bargain hunting.

  • Says $16 delivery to Brisbane if anyone is curious.

Factoring in shipping with this makes it a pretty average deal. Can get it here with free postage (eBay Plus) for $84.50 which is a few dollars cheaper than OPs deal with postage included: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/EATON-3S-UPS-550VA-300W-Standby-…

    • Ebay is letting me use the code PICKLE for that once you've linked which would bring it to $81.99 (so 3% off) shipped with eBay Plus

  • Had an Eaton UPS that died when an outage occurred. When AC came back on all it would do was signal an overvoltage alert.
Nothing else in the house was damaged, just the sole piece of hardware designed to cope with unstable power.

  • So roughly 10 buck cheaper than eBay, but need to pay shipping

  • There is also a cyberpower 650VA from office works for $88.
I think a UPS would be great for wireless modem router and/or a NVR, maybe a NAS since they are usually 12v and 2amps.
Another option looks to be a powerbank type solution like a 12v supply backup, this eBay item 312702806849.
    Any thoughts?
