Yeah it makes RA1 the least replayable game for me.

C&C and even Dune II had silos also but the income you earned was not as high as RA1 which was simply too high, so you didn't need to build silos anywhere near as often as in RA1. In RA1 you just earn way more money than you can actually spend. They did not balance the income generation properly.

RA2 finally did away with silos altogether, and thank god for that. RA2 was an awesome game.

    Silly questions
    1. Will it work with windows 10?
    2. it is asking me to pay in NZD, can I change to AUD?
    Thanks

    • +3

Not a silly question… Currently playing RA2 on Windows 10 and it works fine (looks like the program is executing in compatibility mode for Win 95).

If it's not doing this by default, you can manually set compatibility mode in the properties of the game executable (for the older titles) after install. Shouldn't be necessary for the newer titles in the pack.

All in all I HIGHLY recommend this C&C pack - especially at this price. A bit nostalgic, but still very playable.

NOTE: Requires Origin client software (EA's version of Steam), and it seems you have to be logged in during gameplay.

      • Thanks mate
I’m assuming that it is a NZ based site and I’ll have to pay in NZD?

        • Not sure, I payed AUD from cdkeys

      • Just be aware that the older games run at 640x480.

        • They run fullscreen for me, scaled up

          • @buffalo bill: Still 640x480.

Just looks very blurry because you're scaling it to modern resolutions.

They could use a remaster like SC1 got, but this is EA. They wouldn't make a game that can't be monetized post-purchase.

            • @lostn: this is why people still pick up CRT monitors =)

            • @lostn: You can tweak some of the games to run higher res on CnCnet multiplayer - which looks quite well, but not sure about the campaign.

I agree with your statement about monetizing the game. Let's hope in the RA reboot they don't use "The Sims" as a model for the pricing structure.

        • I'm using a custom config to run Generals on Windows 10 at 2560x1440.
It crashes instantly for me with the default config.

          • @specialk: when I say "older" games, I'm referring to C&C1 and RA1.

C&C1 originally released for DOS at 320x240. They later did a Windows 95 remaster (before it was cool to do remasters) at 640x480.

      • So from your NOTE: Are you saying you have to have an active internet connection to play? I was looking to hook this up for an upcoming flight to NY but that would be scuppered if I do need to be logged in to play.

        • +1

You should be able to login to Origin before you go to Airplane mode (or connection drops etc.) and the games will still load, as long as Origin is running and was logged in when it was started. That works for me anyway.

      • Tried compatibility with C&C 3 but no luck… still says I require directx 9.0 or higher. Any other solutions you got up your sleeve?

        • +1

Just checking you do have a version of DX installed? Google is probably your friend here, but some do need a little tweaking to get going and I think C&C3 is one of those. I didn't have a problem W10 and nVidia card and people are running it but there seems to have more issues with the Intel integrated graphics chips. Apparently you can update the launcher files to the games to bypass Origin/Steam which might be something. Good luck.

Any active multiplayer game servers? and for which game?

    • I would like to know this as well. It would be fun multiplaying with old friends again

    • There are 3rd party places that host now, not sure how active they are.

    • CNC online does Red Alert 3 and there's usually 10-20 people online at any given time.

    • Install this https://cncnet.org

I still play the odd game of red alert 2 :)

That game's multiplayer was amazing. Too bad people didn't play it.

I haven't played a team based shooter more fun than it.

There is a fan remake btw. But it released a few years ago. Probably dead by now.

  • Could you play this on a surfaceclaptop 2 i5 ?

    • Without any further information, I'd still guess yes

These are quite old games and require very little to run

    • Absolutely

I loved this series growing up. The only game I didn't like was C&C2 Tiberian Sun and of course C&C4 which I like to pretend never existed.

Everything else in the series was top notch.

    • +1

What didn't you like about C&C2? The only problem with it was the numerous delays - it was delayed by over a year. Originally due out in mid 1998, then late 98 and finally August 99.. so it was a bit dated by the time it shipped.

      • I don't remember exactly, but there was a lot of annoyances that combined to just make it a not fun experience for me.

I think every 30 seconds some unstoppable seeker drone hits your base and destroys something and there was no counterplay to it. That was one of the annoyances.

I felt the game lacked the polish I'd come to expect from that studio.

        • I loved Tiberian Sun!

          • @releasethekr4cken: Nothing wrong with that. I just think RA2 was a much better game.

I played TS 20 years ago, so I don't remember exactly what it was that made it a chore to play. But it was a lot of small things that combined made it feel not fun to me.

        • Nod's Artillery unit before the nerf had tracking warheads - impossible to avoid, huge damage, wrecks infantry, create craters that would be the envy of giant antlions - OMG so OP
<3 disc throwers tho I can't glitch it to throw across the map like I could with Red Alert 1.

Believe it or not, the Generals plot had the invasion of Iraq in search of WMDs before Bush even did it himself. Maybe Bush was a C&C fan?

Neg because I bought this before but many of the games wont work without creating a virtual machine running old o/s.

    • -1

Negged, because that’s not a good enough reason to neg.

      • Appropriate uses of negative vote

        • Defective product
** Major issue with product in that it doesn't work the way it should.

Installing a VM, which on W7 and W10 is not straight forward for a regular user, then getting a license key for an old OS as a work-around is classified as not working the way it should.

That's like buying a car but finding out that the gearbox is missing.

But then again, this is EA we are talking about so maybe this is actually working the way it should, ie. it doesn't work at all.

        • Except that you don't have to do this to run the games in this pack, so that statement is not correct.

Along with many others I have been running the earlier games happily on W10.

          • @buffalo bill: Well then that becomes a discussion about what is true or not, and for jiberz, the game not working is a fact for them. They have a valid reason to neg vote based on the experience they had, unlike what Super Kami Dende is claiming.

Also, just because it works on your machine doesn't mean it works on everyone's machine. I've played this pack a few years ago and it worked for me, but at the same time I don't doubt that it failed for jiberz.

            • @Blitzfx: We're not arguing jiberz experiences here… the issue is what he said:

many of the games wont work without creating a virtual machine running old o/s

This is not a true statement… jiberz can neg whatever deal they want for whatever reason, but what he should have said is "I couldn't get most of the games to run" (which for him may be true). You assume he is running W7 or W10, but he could be running on a Mac or Linux variant where some of the games won't run via emulation. We don't know enough about his situation, but what he has said is not correct and may mislead users who may otherwise purchase this deal and sit happily playing these older games for hours without issue.

As you can see - you played it, many others are playing it and EA via Origin have packaged it up for distribution. The statement that "many of the games won't work" without a VM setup is incorrect and it has been negged accordingly by numerous.

Some extra information, the following are available for free, with Windows, Mac and Linux support and online play:

    Command and Conquer
    Command and Conquer: Tiberian Sun
    Command and Conquer: Red Alert

    https://cncnet.org

Additionally, the following are available to play online at cncnet provided you own the game (either physical discs or from EA's origin store):

    Dune 2000
Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2 / Yuri's Revenge
    Command and Conquer: Renegade

Finally, a remake of Command and Conquer: Renegade in a modern engine is available for free here:

    https://renegade-x.com

If you're interested in Mac or Linux support for the other games through WINE:

It looks like Renegade should work through WINE

Generals / Zero Hour will work through WINE but the install is more complicated.

C&C 3 and RA3 can be made to work through wine, but it's even more complicated than Generals.

Not possible currently for Red Alert 2 or C&C 4.

Note that they most likely won't work on WINE on macOS Catalina (or above) due to the lack of 32-bit app support.

I am so bummed they canceled Generals 2 (looked really cool), and the Tiberium game (was another Renegade game). (profanity) EA.

    • The generals 2 game was apparently riddled with micro transactions and tested badly with players. I would love another generals but I think it was good that particular project wasn't it.

      • It was only turned into that after it was renamed and the EA LA team laid off.

The original concept was not that as far as I know. But then EA being EA doesn't surprise me. If it was tested badly with players, it's most likely the microtransactions being the cause. So instead of removing them and turning it into the C&C we know, they chose to cancel the project entirely instead.

Still, would have been nice if they did give us another traditional C&C game. Instead they give us a mobile game. That's just pissing on the grave of the franchise.

        • Yeah that sucks if that's how it went. However I'm excited by the C&C remastered project. The team seem genuinely passionate and shows that EA is still willing to do something with the franchise.

          • @Michael15286: I had no idea such a project was in development. Wow. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

There was a Tiberium Wars browser game… I managed to create an NOD faction and had one of the Developers in our Alliance.

Our faction was called "Infamous", and we ended all public forum and public in-game messages with "/spit"

The dev got in on it too.
Needless to say, we dominated the server seed, and we were hated on all the worlds we played on. We treated everyone that wasn't Infamous like inferior sub-humans, and trash talked our way to dominance by tyranny.

      /spit

  • C&C Generals and Generals Zero Hour does NOT work under Windows 10, even with compatibility settings enabled. Says DirectX 8.1+ needs to be installed. This is a gaming PC with many other games, so I'm guessing DirectX is fine. Haven't tried the other ones yet.

    • Origins Game installers are trash, only Steam versions worked for me…
I ended up with four C&C 3 licences.. and only the steam version worked…
This was early 2015 last time I tried… That was also for Zero Hour. I used hyper-v to play..

    • It's working for me, as per my reply above.

PM me for a custom config if you can't get the game to start.

  • Bought it, though don't really have time to play :(

    • not like you have a time limit as to when it must be played by =)
IKR, went back to replay Civ6, boom, hooked, literally entire weekend gone
