Can I use my own dates? Yes - just click the link closest to your preferred dates and then change the dates once the search has completed.

These prices won’t last long. Usually a few days but sometimes much shorter. If you click the sample dates and the prices have gone up it unfortunately means the sale has ended.

Just outside of travel dates! There doesn't appear to be any deals for mid to late jan (obviously school holidays etc..). Might just have to pony up and buy them for around 1K. Does anyone know what Royal Brunei are like to fly? They appear to be the cheapest option on a few days. Or am I better off sticking to singapore airlines for a bit more.

Depends how important transits and alcohol are worth to you…

Hey mate, I did the Royal Brunei flight to Tokyo earlier this year.

I had read good things about them but had quite a negative experience.

I'm not precious about flying or delays, things happen, but it was pretty bad.

On the way there, the first flight is on a cramped plane, the second one wasn't bad. You end up adding 3 - 4 hours to your travel time (from Melbourne) compared to taking a direct flight. I saved about $300 on each ticket so wasn't mad however. There are some odd rules - no use of phones at any time. Like, you can't charge them, can't even take them out and look at them even on flight mode. And no charging of any devices either. Luckily I could use my Switch for part of the journey but once that battery died, that's it. No booze either which, well, depends how much you care.

The way back was a total cluster~~~~. We landed in Brunei - not the best airport in the world, it has to be said - and were notified of a delay, but nothing else. Our one hour stopover quickly turned into four hours of waiting. Not once did the staff give any updates to anyone. Finally, they took our tickets and led us through the gates… and out through customs. Again without telling anyone what was going on.

I am a pretty chilled traveller, at this point other people were cracking the shits and tearing up their immigration forms because we still didn't know what was up. My wife was feeling pretty ill that day so it did make it difficult. We went and sat in the lobby for another hour, finally a bus arrived to take us to a hotel. No staff from the airline came with us or let us know what was going on, once again.

So the bus drove about 45 minutes to a hotel in the middle of nowhere. Another hour of checking in, the hotel was losing passports and getting mixed up, and didn't have enough rooms. So we had to share a room with another couple which was a bit odd. More issues (with the hotel, not the airline) - like the power all being turned off at the hidden fusebox so no lights or switches working. Anyway, it had taken so long to transit there that we could only have a shower and a quick chill before being put back on the bus and back to the airport. And then another 2 - 3 hours waiting for the flight back.

The other danger is that the flights are irregular - only one every 2 or 3 days. So if your connection got cancelled, you would likely be stranded for a while.

If the price difference is not that big, I would go with Singapore or another direct option.

      • Hey thanks so much for the detailed honest report, really appreciate it.

        • All good. In our situation I would do the same, but that's because the other options were all hugely more expensive. I wanted that difference in money so we could eat a little better and not worry about other costs so much.

But if there's not much between, no question, there are better options.

    • Last April they served us meal just 5 minutes before the plane start descended to Tokyo airport, which makes me feel air sick first time in perhaps almost 100 flights over the years :).
They can't even collect all the tray, and asked us to put the tray under the seat in front of us.

I'd recommended Malaysia Airlines as the budget and waiting time usually almost the same.

Probably worth mentioning that all these are via Singapore, yet all those cities also have direct flights to Tokyo on other airlines. I love SQ as much as anyone, but can’t see why you’d want to take a 16 - 20 hr connecting flight when you could fly direct in 9 - 10 hrs. (Also I clicked through to some random dates for each city and it seemed to still be cheaper to fly direct, even with the sale).

    • +2

Yes. Checked flight from BNE - cheaper on Qantas on same date & about half the travel time. Qantas Japan Deal

    • No direct flights to Tokyo from ADL

      • +1

Sorry. My bad. You’re right. But there’s still a better option ex ADL than this deal - 13hrs connecting on Qantas vs 16hrs connecting on SQ.

Just an FYI for cherry blossom dates, below illustrates 2019 blooming predictions.

2020 predictions not released yet, but 2019 will give you an indication:

A great time to visit - book accommodation well in advance as Japanese book up to a year ahead to stay at the best viewing locations.

There is an interesting transition of other blossoms around that period.
Further North or at elevation, blossoming occurs later.

Although it's not within the sales date. Regularly cheap time is October (for Halloween) in Tokyo is unique and sublime! A must do for the bucket list.

    • Why do you say that?

      • +1

Because Japanese businesses love decorating and they get into Halloween much more than we do here. And as soon as Halloween is done, the Christmas decorations come out and you are subjected to Christmas music wherever you go.

As an aside, as I wrote this, some three or four year old next door started blaring out "Jingle Bells", except instead of individual words, it was "Bah. bah bah, bah bah bah, bah bah bah bah bah!" He had pretty good pitch though.

        • When do japs start decorating for xmas? Thinking to go early nov for autumn for 2 wks.. but also want to experience xmas atmosphere in there

      • +1

Halloween is huge there it's also autumn and Kyoto is stunning with the change of colour through the native fauna. Also pumpkin themed latte, treats as well as low crowds, pleasant climate and huge parties if your that way inclined (look up Shibuya Halloween) there literally 20,000 people dressing up enjoying the festivities.

i went to tokyo last december. its the tail end of summer so the weather is pleasant. only had 1 or 2 hot/humid days. dont know how they walk around in full suit and ties in that type of weather

disneyland in october/halloween looked pretty cool, especially at night. i went on a weekday at 1pm, no lines at all, just straight to the ticket counter. the night parade & fireworks was well worth hanging around for

  • I suppose these deals never coincide with a Comiket (first half of August and ~31st December) right?

  • Damn tempting.. but I want confirmation Super Nintendo World will be open! All I can find is that it'll be 'ready for the Olympics', which technically could mean the day before the opening ceremony.

    • Nice! Didn’t know about this but I’m keen!

      • +1

Haha well when you work out the opening date, let me know so I'll be second in line!

        • +1

Will find out for you. My uncle works for Nintendo!

          • @first in line: I'm not stalking you, I'm just observing from a distance for Nintendo stuff you might drop.

  • May end up booking one of these for Sakura, thanks OP!

    • No suitable dates for Sydney for the cherry blossoms

      • I'm from Perth so fingers crossed, although usually Perth the bargain flights are gone.
May try out ANA's new direct flight but it costs a bit more.

  • quick newbie question, when i click on the link, it took me to iwantthatflight website and i chose the date for my holiday, the ticket was only $795 pp for returned trip from Sydney to Tokyo but then i click on the price ticket and it took me to another website call "myholidays.com, the website looked very dodgy. My questions are is it reliable as it was so much cheaper than booking directly with Japan airline, what is the proper way to book the cheap flight using iwantthatflight website ? i plan to go to JP in Mar2020 for 2 weeks only but the flight on Japan airline is about $3k for 2 people returned trip. Thank you so much for your help.
